In November of 2018, I got an email asking if I wanted a literary agent. I was... shocked. I knew I was an organizer— I spent years earning that title. I was certainly a performer— I didn’t learn iambic pentameter for nothing. And I have learned to claim the identity of parent, even if my route was somewhat unique. But I had never thought of myself as a writer, and certainly never imagined being an author. . But when the knock of opportunity comes... you answer it. I told the agent that I was interested, but that I would need a ghost writer. “I’m not an author,” I insisted. We found someone to help me with the pitch to publishers, but I wasn’t able to afford him when it came to writing the full book. I was devastated, and everyone tried to find me a new collaborator who was within my budget. . But then I thought... why can’t I be an author? Why was I insisting on a limited view of who “gets” to write a book? What if you don’t need a college degree from an Ivy League school or a ton of academic articles to your name or a TED Talk? . I took it as a sign from the Universe. As my mentor @trina_c_olson would say, I allowed myself to “get big.” And with the help of @myrsini_s from @carolmannagency, @batya_edits at @theexperiment, and so many other incredible people who believed in my story... We are back on the road, and van will be our home for 4-6 weeks. Today was and still is (still driving) a long driving day. Total for today should be about 14 hours of driving. 😬 We stopped and cooked lunch, and stopped to cook our dinner too. On top of that we stopped a lot for “potty” breaks. But I am always amazed at Zoey’s patients and how well she is handling these long drives. Next up in our Jewish holidays series is the beginning of the Jewish calendar year. Rosh Hashanah (literally “head of the year”) is the Jewish new year, and the start of a ten day period we call the Days of Awe, that culminates in Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish year. On Rosh Hashanah, Jewish tradition holds that God opens three books of account to record the fates of the righteous, the wicked and the in-betweens. The righteous are recorded in the Book of Life, the wicked in the Book of the Dead, and the in-betweens are given ten days to atone and become righteous. There are several lovely things we do to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. A shofar- a polished and carved out animal horn, usually a ram- is blown every day, multiple times, as the biblical name of the holiday is Yom Teruah, literally day of shouting or blasting”. The ritual of tashlich is performed- which is the act of going to a body of water and casting breadcrumbs into the water to symbolically cast away your sins, as we are told to do in Micah: “You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” As always in Jewish holidays, there is food. Most Jewish communities eat apples and honey to symbolize a sweet new year; we bake our challah round to symbolize the seasons of the year; eternal life; and because it resembles a crown- and Rosh Hashanah is the day we symbolically reaffirm god as king for the new year. Sephardic and Mizrahi communities eat a full Seder full of symbolic foods, as with the Passover Seder. I’ll be covering the Sephardic Seder plate, some books, and Yom Kippur in later posts. Trauma - something that Im listening and learning about everyday. Something that Im discovering exists in various forms and affects us in the present. Im learning that certain behaviors that used to protect me in the past, are no longer serving me in the present. Today, they are constraints, and everytime I let go of one bit of the past, Im more expressed in the present. Im discovering depths of in my creativity that I havent felt since kindergarten. These are shattered beams of western hemlock grown in British Columbia. these beams were placed in a press and snapped at @ubc_cawp as part of a test to study the strength of the material. These broken bits are where the material failed under the force applied. Llegamos a Canadá hace 16 años, mi esposo, mi hijo que para ese entonces tenía 3 años de edad, y yo. Un par de años después ingresó a la escuela. El primer año todo parecía normal, pero yo percibía que mi hijo no disfrutaba la escuela, algunas veces llegaba muy triste y otras llorando por las burlas de sus compañeros (por ser hispano y porque no hablaba ni entendía bien el inglés). Eso me partía el corazón pues en lugar de que disfrutara esa primera etapa escolar, parecía que lo estábamos obligando a ir a un lugar donde él no quería estar. Cuando busqué una respuesta, los profesores me decían “no se preocupe, eso es normal, pasará con el tiempo, así que decidimos esperar. Pasó un tiempo y nada cambiaba, al reunirme de nuevo con la directora de la escuela me insinuó que el niño debía ser medicado para que de esta manera se pudiera adaptar al sistema escolar. Pero yo sabía que tenía que haber algo más para ayudar a mi hijo, tenía que haber un sistema diferente donde -sin excluirlo- él pudiera aprender a explotar sus capacidades, un sistema que no le dijera “no puedes, no perteneces”. Con mi esposo empezamos a investigar todas las alternativas para poder enseñar a nuestro hijo fuera de una escuela regular, y fue así como una persona me introdujo al mundo del homeschooling. I love sweet kids’ books. ‘The Kissing Hand’ is definitely on my list of heart-warmers. It fits very well for kindergartners at the beginning of the year because of the anxiety they must face leaving their safety and starting something new. Although, about 75% of my class has attended Pre-school or the equivalent, I still think it’s a perfect beginning of the year book fit that hits home for a lot of kids. I have a Listening Center as one of my Independent Centers and kids respond to the book after they have listened to it. I usually like to make my response questions “text-to-self” or “text-to-world” because it requires some out-of-the-box thinking. Sometimes we brainstorm together first what a possible response could be, but I usually try to make it as open-ended as possible and not give them ideas. It’s always so cute to see the stories and thoughtful responses that come out during this Center. A gente vai tropeçando, vai batendo a canela, vai se decepcionando, vai sofrendo perdas amorosas, perdas de pessoas amadas que morrem, que partem, que desaparecem. Ninguém quer ficar triste. Ninguém quer aceitar esse sentimento que nos traz choro, reflexão, vontade de silêncio e de solidão. Quem gosta da gente não nos quer ver triste. Dizem: não é nada, vai passar, não dá bola, não chora, não fica assim. Eu fico triste sim. E deixo a tristeza ali, no lugar dela. Não finjo que estou feliz. Eu assumo que tenho motivos para estar triste. Quando estou triste, inclusive, eu gosto de chorar. Isso me ajuda a sentir melhor. Aliás, quem me conhece sabe que eu sei chorar, sem ter vergonha. Sei chorar com a mesma facilidade que sei sorrir. Quando sinto vontade de chorar de tristeza, simplesmente, deixo acontecer. Aprendi muito mais com a tristeza do que em outros momentos. I know that 2020 has been a tough year for everybody - particularly kids. That’s why the Andrews Government will keep sessional kinder free for most families in Term 4, with $26.7 million in extra funding. Community-based, local government and school providers offering sessional programs will be eligible for about $500 per enrolment to provide children with access to a free 15-hour program each week. And we know that this year has been tougher for some kids than others. 🌟October nears and I am excited to celebrate a favorite holiday of mine –– Día de los Muertos. Here is a short list of children’s literature featuring different aspects of the holiday to share with students, educators, and families. Unfortunately, many of these titles are not #ownvoices but I do find most provide near accurate information about the holiday. I also put a photo of a family altar I made a few years ago. I’ll also be sharing my current family altar soon once it is ready!🌟 🌟Día de los Muertos is celebrated differently in various countries including here in the U.S. In Mexico, Día de los Muertos is celebrated over several weeks throughout October and culminating on November 1st for Día de los Inocentes and November 2nd Día de los Difuntos. ​This joyous holiday is a time where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. Families across Mexico and the U.S. await this reunion with anticipation by setting up family altars placing several key elements such as the union of life and death, personal items the deceased enjoyed while living, flowers to guide the souls home. According to tradition, on October 31 many families head to cemeteries to decorate the gravesites of their deceased family members to remember them and help them crossover and relish in the festivities.🌟 🌟Día de los Muertos is not “Mexican Halloween” and it is not associated with horror, fear, and gore. September 15 - October 15 is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month! According to the U.S. Census, the Hispanic community accounts for almost 20% of the country’s population. However, books with Latinx/Hispanic/Latin American characters only comprise 13% of our diverse picture book collection — and an even smaller fraction of the total children’s lit market. New Wall for My Kids School Library! Bridge. I went in a while ago, and worked with pupils from all year groups. We drew together. They were fearless. It didn’t have to be perfect. We talked about imagination. About where we go when reading. We wanted a picture that would make new stories rather than rely on, or be derivative of Stories past. There’s an obvious “Paint Harry Potter, or the woods, or the wild things, or Biff and Chip, or just books” road, which would have been easy but done, and done and done. Type in Library mural thats what you’ll see. The school, The Teachers, TAs and pupils were all open to taking the unexpected road. The abstract one, which makes no sense, filled with symbolism, and beginnings, where the reading child is the giant. They wanted something they hadn’t seen before. GOOD ON THEM!
