I wasn’t crossing a state line or a time zone or the Continental Divide: it was a three-hour round trip for this hug. It was yesterday. . My dad is a tender king; a good partner, an incredible artist, a sponsor for quite a few spirits in the program, and a free heart. That side of him and I see each other completely for all the beautiful complications of a daughter and father. The forms you move through as a wild child fights to shed what is asked of her to find what she’s supposed to be. The pains of emotional musculature breaking things bound to the earth from a time before time. The joys of calling bullshit from the top of your lungs until you believe yourself and all of the sudden everyone is older and softer and it’s hard to wrap your head around where all the time went. Here we are, him and me. . My Dad’s partner, my stepmom, has been in the hospital for two weeks and we have all been suspended in some form as she has worked her way toward recovery from a punctured lung. This is not COVID, and they both tested negative before her small accident called out that it was major. It’s been stressful in a stressful time to be alive. To scour your light in solidarity when time doesn’t exist and hold hands from afar. For me, the lacking highway in my eyes and nothingness practice-pause. Our identity floating. Necessary deepest belief. Community. Love. We are all clinging on to more crystalline times. . As of yesterday, she is getting better. (!!!) They took their 15 year wedding anniversary dinner in the hospital and he smuggled in flatware and plans for them to escape to a secret spot (you know I won’t tell Dad) in Shasta after her release. He and I got a photo in the spot where they were married those years before. . I love you Dad, and I will be here. This stretch of road I guess is where I turn to you as an adult and with the gifts I know I have I raise you up too. I always will. . .
