Zarina Hashmi Born in Aligarh, India on 1937, Zarina Hashmi who goes by her first name is an Indian-born, American artist whose work spans from minimal drawing to printmaking and sculpture which more or less evokes and explores the idea of home, distances, trajectories influenced by her extensive travels. Zarina received a degree in Mathematics and is fascinated by architecture which reflects in her use of geometry and structural purity on her works. Having an identity of an Indian woman born as a Muslim, she uses visual elements from Islamic religious decorations, especially the regular geometry commonly found in Islamic architecture. She has been one of the very few women amongst the Indian artists of her time to include M.F. Husain, V.S. Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta and Nasreen Mohamedi. Her artistic practice expanded after marriage and departure from Aligarh in 1958 during sojourns abroad when she lived in Bangkok, Paris, and Bonn with her husband, a diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service. While living in Paris in the mid-1960s, Zarina studied with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 and was one of the many Indian artists living and working there at the time. Upon her return to India in 1968, Zarina moved to Jaguar and lived there, alone, for six years. She left Delhi for Tokyo in 1974 where she worked with Toshi Yoshido at his studio and immigrated to the United States the following year. Zarina built out her loft, a community of friends and was part of the city’s burgeoning feminist art movement. She supported herself by teaching at universities across the country then traveled back home to India, fought eviction from her apartment, had exhibitions in India, Pakistan, and New York, and continued visiting her family in Pakistan after they moved in 1959, the new country that they, but not she, would call home. German 6th Army Infantrymen pause in the ruins during fierce fightings with the Red Army during the Battle of Stalingrad, Russia, October 1942. The German offensive to capture Stalingrad began in August 1942, using the 6th Army and elements of the 4th Panzer Army. The attack was supported by intense Luftwaffe bombing that reduced much of the city to rubble. The battle degenerated into house-to-house fighting, as both sides poured reinforcements into the city. By mid-November, the Germans had pushed the Soviet defenders back at great cost into narrow zones along the west bank of the Volga River. On 19 November, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a two-pronged attack targeting the weaker Romanian and Hungarian armies protecting the 6th Armys flanks. The Axis flanks were overrun and the 6th Army was cut off and surrounded in the Stalingrad area. Adolf Hitler was determined to hold the city at all costs and forbade the 6th Army from attempting a breakout; instead, attempts were made to supply it by air and to break the encirclement from the outside. Heavy fighting continued for another two months. At the beginning of February 1943, the Axis forces in Stalingrad, having exhausted their ammunition and food, surrendered after five months, one week and three days of fighting. “A United States Marine taking part in a patrol from the 1st Marine Division stops for a moment to glance at the corpse of an Imperial Japanese Army soldier while the patrol moves south through a small village on the advance towards Shuri Castle on Okinawa, May 24th, 1945. ___ Shuri Castle was the ancient seat of the Ryukyuan Kingdom, built in the 15th century, and it was almost completely destroyed during the vicious fighting of the Battle of Okinawa in the spring and summer of ‘45.” ___ During World War 2, the Imperial Japanese Army set up their headquarters underground the castle. By early 1945, they had established complex lines of defense and communications in the area around Shuri, and across the southern part of Okinawa as a whole. ___ By May 1945, the Americans were held back by the strong defenses the Japanese had laid down only months before around Shuri Castle. On May 25th, the US Battleship Mississippi shelled the castle for three days and by May 27th it was ablaze. ___ On May 29th, the 1st Battalion of the 5th Marines were tasked with capturing Shuri Castle. Seizing the castle represented both strategic and psychological blows for the Japanese and was a milestone in the Okinawa campaign. But the Japanese had conducted a skillful retreat days before. ___ Due to the retreat of Japanese forces, US Marines secured the castle against little resistance. Mas, não duvido um segundo sequer, que vamos vencê-lo o melhor que pudermos e soubermos. Na nossa História, vencemos sempre os desafios cruciais. Por isso temos quase novecentos anos de vida. Nascemos antes de muitos outros. Existiremos ainda, quando eles já tiverem deixado de ser o que eram e como eram. Deixem-me terminar com um exemplo de como somos. This past Saturday, 97-year-old Private First Class Arthur Lee Brodin, a Castle Rock resident, was honored for his service to our country during World War II. The ceremony started with a WW II-era Jeep escort from his home to the Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park. The ceremony was hosted by Congressmen Ken Buck and remarks were also given by Castle Rock Mayor Jason Gray. At the ceremony, PFC Brodin was presented seven medals and awards for his service from 1943 to 1946. His service included surviving a glider crash landing on D-Day, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and assisting a doctor perform an emergency surgery on another soldier while en route to the U.S. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Thank you for your service, PFC Brodin! We are honored to have you as part of our Castle Rock community. - @crgov on Instagram

The man in the photograph above is Donald Rutter, who was a member of the HQ Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne. Started a new great war page @faces_of_ww1 Please follow our WW1 educational page full of amazing colorized images and stories He is holding an M1 Garand rifle and in the background is a C-47, very much like the one that dropped him into Italy twice and then into Normandy before being captured and sent to Stalag 4B near the Czechoslovakian border. His first combat jump was into Sicily, followed by Salerno, then into Normandy. After landing just north of St. Mere Eglise, Rutter found a small group of paratroopers and joined them in the fight. The whole unit was constantly harrassed by sniper and machine gunfire. A snipers bullet barely missed Rutters head, flying just inches to the side over his shoulder. Their makeshift unit was overwhelmed by German forces early that morning, and thus Rutter spent the rest of the war as a kriegie, a POW. Here in the US it is not just the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War 1, it is also Veterans Day. Id like to send my respects to all the veterans who follow my page, those who have fallen in combat, and all the members of our fine military past and present.
