Happy XOXO day! When we started preproduction for the 11th Jayhawks album early in 2019, nobody couldve predicted that the eventual release date would be smack dab in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. That situation has obviously affected the bands ability to play live shows but were still very excited for this release and hope everyone digs it. The Jayhawks will be back on the road as soon as were able to; until then, enjoy XOXO. XOXO is now available everywhere. The initial pressing of the CD features the 12 album tracks + 3 bonus tracks. The first vinyl pressing has the 12 album tracks on a single LP and also includes a CD with all 15 tracks in a slip sleeve. The bonus tracks will NOT be available on subsequent pressings of the CD and later pressings of the LP will only include a download card for the 12 album tracks without a CD. Happy Birthday Edward Burne-Jones! The British painter and designer Edward Burne-Jones was born on this day in 1833. One of the key figures of the Pre-Raphaelite group, Burne-Jones also worked closely with the designer William Morris and was a co-founder of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. In addition to paintings, Burne-Jones was involved in the resurgence of the art of stained glass in Britain. Examples of his paintings, stained glass, and illustrations are on view in the AFA exhibition, “Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts & Crafts Movement.” In his unfinished painting, “The Wizard” which he worked on from 1891 to 1898, we see a hooded sorcerer revealing a convex mirror behind a curtain. Is the shipwreck we see in that mirror happening at the moment or is this a view into the future? Burne-Jones never identified a specific literary source of this painting, so perhaps the scene was drawn from his own imagination. “Victorian Radicals” resumes its national tour when it opens at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno on March 6, 2021. Caspar David Friedrich In the mid-1980s, my friend, historian and art researcher, Guadalupe Álvarez, gave me a book about Caspar David Friedrich. There are gestures from friends that are never appreciated enough. The first thing that surprised me, without a doubt, was how the work of the German Romantic landscape painter was so contemporary, marked by the audacity of deciding to paint only a window, for example. It is the philosophy of his work, contemplation, passion for nature and mystical character which translates into an appreciative bond of man towards it, and the values that establish a deep connection with the way I approach my own landscape and make him a key figure in my field of reference. Dame Laura Knight — Spring (1916/1920). Oil on canvas. • Dame Laura Knight (1877 – 1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain; her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. In 1929 she was created a Dame, and in 1936 became the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy. Her large retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1965 was the first for a woman. Knight was known for painting amidst the world of the theatre and ballet in London, and for being a war artist during the Second World War. 🔍 FOCUS SUR // FOCUS ON 🔎 Vincent van Gogh, La Méridienne ou La Sieste (1889-1890): La méridienne fut peinte lors du séjour de Van Gogh à Saint-Rémy de Provence alors quil était interné dans un asile. La composition est reprise dun dessin de Millet pour les Quatre heures de la journée. Vincent justifie sa démarche à son frère Théo : Cest plutôt traduire dans une autre langue, celle des couleurs, les impressions de clair-obscur en blanc et noir. Van Gogh a copié à de nombreuses reprises des oeuvres de Millet quil considérait comme un peintre plus moderne que Manet. Fidèle à la composition originale jusque dans les détails de la nature morte du premier plan, Van Gogh fait pourtant complètement sienne cette scène de repos qui symbolise chez Millet la France rurale des années 1860. Cette retranscription personnelle se fait essentiellement par une construction chromatique fondée sur le contraste des couleurs complémentaires bleu-violet et jaune-orangé. Malgré le caractère apaisant du sujet on y retrouve lintensité unique de lart de Van Gogh. . Vincent van Gogh, The siesta (1889-1890): The siesta was painted while Van Gogh was interned in a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy de Provence. The composition is taken from a drawing by Millet for Four Moments in the Day. To justify his act, Vincent told his brother Theo: I am using another language, that of colours, to translate the impressions of light and dark into black and white. Van Gogh often copied the works of Millet, whom he considered to be a more modern painter than Manet. Remaining faithful to the original composition, even down to the still life details in the foreground, Van Gogh nevertheless imposes his own style upon this restful scene which, for Millet, symbolized rural France of the 1860s. This highly personal retranscription is achieved primarily by means of a chromatic construction based on contrasting complementary colours: blue-violet, yellow-orange. Despite the peaceful nature of the subject, the picture radiates Van Goghs unique artistic intensity. . Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting.
