When I discovered one of my favorite wool sweaters had been eaten by moths I refused to give up on it. Instead, I took up Wool Felting and learned to mend the holes with tiny little works of art. (The only original heart on this shirt is the giant one.) - As it turns out there were 44 holes in the sweater! A lot more than I originally realized, but it gave me a ton of great practice with the wool felting technique. - I’ve since mended more sweaters, and I now have the confidence to say: SEND ME YOUR SWEATERS! As hard and confusing as these past 4 months have been, I forgot how nice it is to be in Southern California ☀️ Flying out here in April was the best decision I’ve made this year. We had a family day today. I’m old school about a lot of things- like this light table that I use for drafting. Most muralists I know do their mockups entirely digitally these days. I appreciate the convenience and speed of digital drawing, but certain parts of the process remain analog for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sketching my initial ideas is always done with pencil on paper. I like the physicality of this process. Somehow it feels crucial for my thinking. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first sketches are always terrible: “the shitty first draft”. Usually I sketch on tracing paper so I can quickly draw and redraw easily as many times as I need. When I finally get my composition decided, I then use a light box to trace it onto a more durable surface. That’s what I’m doing in this photo. I’m tracing figures, landscapes and line work onto a surface I can paint. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sometimes I will skip this step and scan my drawings in for digital coloring, but for this particular design I’m painting the mock-up by hand. Frida Gertrude was born at 4:56 AM on September 23 after 48 hours of labor. She is 8.1 pounds, 21.5 inches long, and very healthy! A quick note on Frida photos going forward: I love sharing with you all and really feel like I’ve gotten to know a lot you quite well, and of course some of you I know IRL as well. But the truth is, with nearly 50K followers and a public account, I DON’T know the vast majority of people who see my photos. Rob feels pretty strongly about Frida photos not being all over the internet, and I do also want to respect Frida’s privacy. So many of you have told me you can’t wait for photos, and you have been so supportive throughout my pregnancy that I really wanted to share at least one picture, but going forward I plan to avoid showing her face on my public accounts. This might change over time, but I did want to be transparent with you and thank you for all your support and excitement about Frida ❤️ P.S. NO judgment from me whatsoever on other people’s choices about photos on social media. I absolutely love seeing so many of your adorable and hilarious kids! Living together in these first days post birth has had so many benefits for the team. One special benefit has been the ability for @annasurrogate to breastfeed for some feeds (with us being able to alternate and feed Baker with colostrum, that Anna had kindly expressed and frozen in the lead up to birth) ❤️ . . Anna has been so generous in waking in the wee hours of the morning to feed Baker, which has been such an incredible support for us, wonderful for Baker (with a full tum!) and has provided a space for Anna to connect with her womb mate, earth side, in a way that only she can, while establishing a milk supply. 🥰 . . 12 years ago today @rebekah.that.boy.mom asked me to meet her at Queen Sirikit Park. She said it was a really beautiful spot, lots of nature, no crowds and plenty of space. That’s not common in Bangkok where we lived at the time, so I took the long skytrain ride up to meet her. It must have taken longer than I expected because I remember already feeling 🙄 when I got there. Then she made me chase her around the park, she kept texting that it was just so pretty she couldn’t stop walking and she was just a bit further down the path. My feet hurt when I finally got to the gazebo where she promised to wait for me. As I walked up, I didn’t see her but @matt.willingham was waiting there with a whole romantic set-up. Then, right as we looked at each other, a bug flew into my eye and I stopped short, turned away and tried to rub it out. He, of course, hadn’t seen the bug and stood there holding a ring wondering what the heck was going on😅. We managed to recover the moment though, he asked me to marry him and I said yes. Then our best friends jumped out from behind the bushes and we all went out to celebrate. One of them took this picture of us on the sky train ride back. . We got married three months later over the short break the school gave us off for New Year’s ❤️ It’s been 12 years but honestly it feels like 30. We’ve been through a lot, we’ve grown and we’ve changed and though I can’t say I’d do it all again, I wouldn’t choose to do it with anybody else. A part of our livelihood includes trapping. We trap Beavers, and occasionally other fur bearers. We use the furs for winter clothing but one of the things that is most important to us is that we eat whatever we trap. Whether its Beaver, Otter, Muskrat, or Fisher, it goes in our freezer and provides us for the year. This is actually the first year we caught any Fisher. And this is the first meal weve had from it. It was delicious!!! So fatty but not gamey at all. Watch out for porcupine quills though! They are the only mammal that can successfully hunt porcupine by flipping then on their backs. When I was skinning this guy in the winter I was amazed by how many quills were embedded in the skin. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write. It’s with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my dad who passed away in the early morning hours of Friday May 8th 2020. I can’t tell you how many times I catch myself still wanting to reach out for advice, taking for granted I could always call you for answers. Since baby girl was born I haven’t really taken a lot of pictures of myself. To be honest I haven’t felt the cutest while being on the brink of exhaustion, unshowered, no make up, hair a mess, and living in baby stained PJs! Trying to give myself time and grace as my body and mind are recovering from the huge amount of work it’s been put through. Giving birth was the most challenging yet incredible experience of my life and honestly still amazes me every day when I think of what my body was able to do! Now nothing else matters and nothing compares to my love for her. This may not be the best photo of me but it IS a pretty accurate representation of how things have actually looked for me and shows the reality of post partum life which many don’t discuss or put out for others to see. Pure exhaustion with pure love 💕 still can’t believe I’m a mom! 🥰 . Getting slowly back into exercise has helped me tremendously and is my ideal form of “self care” how do YOU self care? Hi friends! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself ahead of our FW20 collection. I’m Rachel, maker of all things Seedling + Sprout, and this little boy is my inspiration behind this shop. I started sewing shortly before my son was born; he needed bibs and I needed a creative outlet to keep myself busy while I was off of work due to a high risk pregnancy. After my son was born I was filled with joy, love, exhaustion, and anxiety. The early days of motherhood were tough; I experienced postpartum complications, and this little guy didn’t sleep - at all - for almost a year. Sewing quickly became my form of self-care, and this small shop community became a way for me to connect with other mothers and creatives. Sewing these little bonnets grounded me, and helped me navigate the biggest transition of my life. Earlier this year we moved from Nunavut back home to Ontario. We bought an 80 year old house in my hometown, and have spent the summer resettling our lives. I’ve been slowly working my way back to my career while also growing this little business which has become more than I ever could have imagined - all thanks to you! I’ve been putting in extra long days and nights as I get ready to launch this collection. This new line of bonnets will offer regular style and pixie style bonnets in both linen and wool. I’ll have various lining options and pompom options, as well as one new animal bonnet (which no one has correctly guessed yet)! I’m also launching a new website, all thanks to my dear friend Heidi @creatingmagiconline. Months of hard work and love have been poured into this collection, and I am so excited to soon share these bonnets with all of you. Before kids, I was so productive. I would work almost all day, without stopping, even to sleep. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Work is a passion. The hustle didnt feel like work, it was satisfying and I knew I was building something important. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After kids, work often takes a back seat and I struggle to feel productive because I keep measuring myself to my pre-kid self. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The volume of to-dos at home is never ending. Cleaning is a joke and I cant keep up. I never know what will come up next and what will demand my attention one day to the next. Thats not a pandemic thing, thats a kid thing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We all keep talking about the new normal and adjusting to what were faced with. Its been almost 3 years since our first kid was born and Im still struggling to realize my new normal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I fully expect myself to be as productive as before. Im pushing myself to be my best self, but I think Im finally realizing that my best self is already here and Im putting a lot of unnecessary pressure on the volume of work Im capable of while keeping 2 children alive! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Give yourself the space you need, and remind yourself you are enough and you are doing enough! I’m all about finding the silver linings in things! When we were looking forward at the beginning of 2020, we talked about all the places we would travel with our baby boy. Since plans have changed due to travel restrictions and health concerns, we looked around and realized we can give our son fun new experiences that feel like travel right in our own backyard! We have embarked on a series of “staycations” around the @palmbeachesfl and it’s been amazing. Recently we stayed at @hiltonwestpalmbeach and had a wonderful experience. Whenever we do overnights in hotels, we try to book a suite so we can continue our nighttime routine as we would at home and there are no disruptions to our regularly scheduled sleep 😴! @hiltonwestpalmbeach has beautiful rooms and suites to accommodate any type of trip. There are 4 restaurants on site including @galleywestpalmbeach which is a local spot that is open to the public and has a great daily happy hour. The pool is massive and there is plenty of space to socially distance and catch some rays. You can even rent a private cabana and order drinks and food by the pool if you’re staying a while. The hotel is doing a fantastic job during the pandemic and keeping everything sanitized and safe. All staff and guests are masked inside the hotel and there are hand sanitizer dispensers around every corner. We felt super safe and at home during our stay. If you’re looking to get outside and see some of @downtownwpb you can walk directly across the street to @rosemarysquarewpb which was recently given the most beautiful facelift. There are tons of shops and restaurants and photo oops within walking distance. Around the corner is @grandviewpublic if you’re hungry and looking for some live music, or even a morning yoga class. West Palm Beach has so much to offer as a tourism destination or a night away for local families like mine. The European Athletics Council today (8) confirmed that the European Athletics U18 Championships, scheduled to take place from 16 to 19 July this year in Rieti, Italy, but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be rescheduled for 2021 at a date still to be confirmed. Meeting via video conference on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 May, the Council also decided that the second edition of The Match, the new team format competition between Europe versus USA whose first edition was held in Minsk, Belarus in 2019, and scheduled again for Minsk in 2021, is now cancelled. The main reason behind this decision was the crowded athletics calendar in 2021 following the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games to 2021. The next edition of The Match is now slated to take place in 2023 in the United States. As Miss Toronto, one of my goals was to help the people in my community that were really in need. I was able to collect food donations during the worst part of CoVid 19 and deliver the much needed items to 3 separate shelters in Toronto on multiple occasions. I supported 1 women’s and children’s shelter- Nellie’s Place (pictured above), 1 youth shelter for ages 16-24yrs - Horizons for Youth, and 1 men’s shelter - the Good Sheperd. All three are in the District of Toronto where I live and reign. . These shelters provides meals every day to dozens of people in need and they rely heavily on donations. Unfortunately at the start of CoVid 19, donations stopped as people began hoarding food. I made it my mission to support these shelters in helping some of Toronto’s most vulnerable people. Thank you to everyone who donated and participated in my beauty with a purpose and to my partners, @loblaws and @metro. I was able to make 7 food deliveries to these shelters. When the shop went out of business in February, they couldnt stand to see a great store go to waste so they decided to take over and put their own spin on an educational toy store - having a five year old themselves, they know how hard it is to find great products for kids that please the parents too. • You just have to look outside and you are greeted by a sea of little faces, scooters and buggies. Its such a family centred place and we love the vibe. • We had a chat with Chris and Giovanna about how COVID has affected them: Footfall is down so the store is quieter than normal. We are nervous about what will come in the next few months. If people continue to support local businesses and shop small, we do believe we can get through all this. I am heartbroken about the passing of Bill Gates Sr. It is difficult to overstate what he meant to me, to our family, and to our foundation. Bill Sr. liked to say, in characteristic modesty, that the secret to his success was simply “showing up.” And he was world-class at showing up: as a father and grandfather, as the heart of our foundation who rarely missed a day of work in 20 years (even though he was retired the whole time), and as a pillar of the Seattle community for almost three quarters of a century. He always brought with him extraordinary wisdom, endless integrity, and a magical sense of wonder about the world around him.
