Today is bitter sweet as it marks the closing day of Emerging North at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse, Yukon. Emerging North is the first major art exhibition I have ever curated and I loved every minute of it! ❤️❤️ I had the great pleasure of curating eight incredible Indigenous artists: Violet Gatensby, Krystle Coughlin Silverfox, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Kaylyn Baker, Cole Pauls, Blake Lepine, Benjamin Gribben, and Heather Von Steinhagen. The exhibition was only meant to be up for three months with its opening reception corresponding with the opening of the Arctic Winter Games. But we all know that that didnt happen! Instead, the Yukon Arts Centre jumped on the chance to do a virtual tour of the exhibition as soon as they knew their doors would be temporarily closed. The exhibition was up for a total of SIX months, one of the longest running shows at YAC and was featured in the Field Trip Art Across Canada Series. 😁 YAC was also able to organize a fantastic virtual artist talk! This exhibition will forever be a milestone for me and Im very grateful for the artists and the Yukon Arts Centre for this wonderful opportunity! #emergingnorth Todays artwork highlights are Ets’edegél’ (Spear Game) (2020) by Krystle Coughlin Silverfox and Diving Shark (2011) by Benjamin Gribben. Zaterdagochtend met onze jongste kat naar de dierenarts gefietst om haar in te laten slapen. Ze was verlamd. Misschien FIP. Er was een CT scan gedaan, die wees veel uit maar gaf geen bevestiging. Je komt daar nooit meer achter, zei de dierenarts. Haar mascara was uitgelopen waardoor het leek alsof ze om onze Bommel huilde. Dit gaat niet beter worden. Haar laatste reflex is deze, en ze tikte de snorharen aan. Bommel lag levenloos op mijn schoot. Twee injecties later was ze dat ook echt. Het verschil was niet te voelen. Ik zat een paar minuten met haar dode lijfje in mijn armen, dacht aan die keer dat ik haar trots met een veldmuis in haar bekje zag lopen op het erf. 147 euro rekende ik af. Met de dode kat in mijn bakfiets reed ik nog naar een tankstation om batterijen te kopen voor de afstandsbediening van ons hek. Thuis begroeven we Bommel in een schoenendoos. De kinderen gooiden sterrenglitters over haar heen. Ik groef een kuil, zij schoven de modder terug. Bobby vertelde een verhaal, Mozes zette veren en bloemen in het graf. Romy brandde salie. My daughter once asked me why my stomach is fluffy and she actually felt bad for me. Some of the Brendekildes works were more to do with the happier memories the artist had of rural life when lack of money could not detract from the pleasures of immersing oneself in nature such as his 1889 springtime painting, The First Anemones. It shows a young woman walking with a little girl in a wood in the early Spring. The open floor of the wood is carpeted with abundant white flowers of wood anemone. The young woman is unlikely to be the girl’s mother. Instead, she wears the black dress and white apron of another woman ‘in service’, in this case probably as the little girl’s maid or nanny. Today she is eleven. Just like that I’ve run out of fingers and now we are running out of time. Listen to me, mamas of little bitties. I know you hate hearing this, but the time goes so slow at first and then I swear to God, someone somewhere flips a switch, and it is warp speed ahead. And it really stinks that it is that way because when the girls were small I was so tired and I didn’t know who I was or what I was doing or if any of that even mattered, and it seemed like I had 75 hours in every single day to worry about that and pray for bedtime to come. And, now it’s just not the same. I’ve realized it doesn’t matter what I am doing with my life as long as I am loving my kids well. That’s literally all they need from us, and I would give anything for those slow days to come back now and I would take heart in the fact that I do love my kids well, and I would just let all of the rest of it go. Let all of it go, young mamas. I can’t tell you exactly when it switches over from painstakingly long days and mind-numbing repetitiveness to this lightning pace of change, but I can tell you that it happens without you even knowing it. I am finding lately that I long to be as present as possible with my son. I know in just over a month Jason and I will be welcoming our next beautiful babe into this world and I’m so so excited about it. But in amongst the excitement, I catch myself feeling sad that it will no longer just be the four of us (Jason, Logan, Bronx and I) and when Jason is at work I am usually dedicating all of my time and effort to Logi. Soon I will need to learn to juggle, and balance being a mama to a toddler as well as a newborn. This already has me feeling guilty towards Logan and worrying that he will feel less loved or important. I always try to be present and in the moment, but I’ve definitely been doing this even more in the last few months and honestly, I’m never happier than when we’re playing together and I’m soaking in all the little moments with him. Skating is the thing that has turned me into the person and athlete that I am today. Casinos are opening in MI this week at a limited capacity, yet ice arenas are continuously getting shut down. I have not once voiced my opinion about the current state of things because I truly do believe that posting on social media and arguing with someone with opposing views is purely counterproductive BUT this one really does my head in. With properly placed sanitizing and social distancing protocols, I think we can agree that youth sports are extremely important in the upbringing of our next generation. Especially in times like these. I don’t think I or any other athlete I know would be the person I/we are today without all of the lessons that my sport has taught me on and off the ice. (A sense of community, a strong work ethic, confidence, the list goes on and on) I’m truly baffled at how things are unfolding and just want some answers on why ice arenas are being left in the dust in Michigan. Pääosin vaan minusta riippumattomista syistä hommat ja stressi kasaantui aivan hulluna, tuntui ettei pää kohta pysy pinnalla. Viime viikko tuntui olevan pelkkää maanantaita kaikkine farsseineen ja se huipentui migreeniin illalla. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Migreenin jälkeen kuitenkin koko olo tuntuu ihanan puhdistuneelta ja samalla tuntuu nyt ihanalta aloittaa leppoisampi syksy. Oliskohan mulla kymmenisen miljöökuvausta vielä studiokuvausten ohella (+jäätävä edittikasa) ja sitten loman kautta talvisesongin pariin. We’ve been a little quiet since school started! Scout began her 7th grade year in a blended model (2 days in the school building and 3 day at home). Her classes are live streamed on her home days, so she is still “in class” daily. While very different than normal, it has been a successful method of teaching the class every day. Sailor’s 5th grade year is also very different than we expected! She is doing traditional homeschool using a variety of curriculums. Thalia is in marching band and plays the flute. She also does varisty golf. In her free time she likes to travel and go on adventures. Для себя считаю гениальным моноспектакль Гришковца «Как я съел собаку». Я смотрела старую версию, одну из первых, 2004 (?) года, когда автор был ещё молодым. В моей жизни тоже есть история поедания собаки. Там где я жила, наверное до сих пор сильная корейская диаспора, и использовать в пищу братьев наших меньших норма пищевой жизни. Более того, сие действие украшено вдохновлявшим напутствием на усиление мужской силы. Мужья моих знакомых так и ездили «на собаку», в определённые домашние кафе. При этих кафе ещё и сауны водились, так что наверное мужскую силу можно было проверить сразу же, после вкусного ужина. Или нет. Я же находясь у друга в гостях проголодалась и мне было предложено вот это вот. И показано, как любое мороженное мясо. Позже зажаренное. И да, я помню, было вкусно. Но не история про собаку сделала мне хорошо от спектакля, скорее понимание как важна сама по себе жизнь с ее ритмом и мелочами. Как важные эмоции переживаемые прямо здесь и прямо сейчас. Как красива может быть История жизни одного простого персонажа. Красива своей обыденностью и чувствами. У меня отложились два момента, про советские кукольные мультфильмы и про дореволюционную способность достойно уходить в вечность служащих морфлота. И вопрос автора: «Откуда они знали как надо умирать?». Знали, потому что были наполнены духовно. Жили, ходя под Богом, зная что с ним любой исход правильный. Доверялись ему. Безусловно это мои предположения. Но кто бы меня мог натолкнуть на эту глубину? Наверное только Гришковец, и именно сейчас. Обычно я не следую рекомендациям и советам, кроме тех, которые сама ищу. А здесь мне просто надо было влюбиться в моменты жизни, понимать их значимость и величие. Потому случился в моей жизни Гришковец, его «Прощание с бумагой» и «Как я съел собаку». ............ ПыСы. Little Athletics Victoria Update: Returning to competition & training All sporting activities are suspended in Victoria until at least 13th September. Centres are advised: • To expect a revised set of training and competition protocols to be released by LAVic upon confirmation from the Victorian State Government that community sport can resume. Note, there is currently no timeframe on the resumption of community sport in Victoria. • To plan the commencement of their season, taking into account the conditions stated in the ‘Return to Competition & Training’ (14th July version) protocols document as a guide. COVID-19 packs for Centres A number of Centres have enquired about providing materials and equipment to enhance the safety of conducting their Centre competitions during the pandemic. To this end, LAVic can advise that it is well advanced in reaching an agreement with an Australian-based manufacturer to supply Centres on a cost basis with ‘COVID-19 sports packs’ containing hand sanitiser, and surface cleaning equipment. Details are expected to be finalised very soon. LAA Transgender Policy LAA has recently released its Transgender inclusion Policy. This policy provides guidance for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in athletics conducted within the Little Athletics framework. This policy and the summary ‘Transgender Policy Checklist’ can be found on the LAVic website. For queries about the policy or its application, please contact the LAVic office in the first instance. Today would have been Belle’s first day of preschool. She’s watched her siblings attend preschool her entire life and cried at every drop off because she couldn’t go too. So it breaks my heart not to be sending her to school today, when it was finally her turn. But instead I’m choosing to not dwell on what could have been and we are instead embracing homeschooling together. And just to be clear, by “homeschool” I mean adventures outside, playing dolls, coloring, painting, and playing with play-doh. So basically just like our normal days. When it rains it pours, and tomorrow is a different story but I’m going to take my figure skating angels’ blessings and run with it! 😂 I haven’t done these babies #triplesalcow since... 2010?? And complete honesty - I landed the first one I tried 😆 accompanied with genuine jolly excitement from my friends and myself in achieving something I thought was long gone. It’s no quad on IJS, but it’s my ‘quad’ 😂 Lesson here is the benefits of off-ice training! It’s just so so important, and I realize that more now than ever before. No way could I have attempted these without doing my lockdown classes with everyone! Exercising fundamentals and strength is so important. If you need more resources, @balancedskaters also does an incredible job preparing skaters’ body. We really need to focus on: is your body able to support that specific movement? If not, build it, make it stronger! . I was looking forward to this feeling again with you all so badly. This will have to do. I have goosebumps watching our provincials run again because you can see the fight, drive, and pure love in each of your faces.
