The loss of my twin sister, Lacey Jean, has always been hard for me to talk about. ⠀⠀ She died in infancy due to complications of a congenital heart disease called Truncus Arteriorosis. ⠀⠀ I learned very early in life that if I openly talked about this loss there was a very high chance of receiving dismissive and hurtful comments such as “oh, so you didn’t know her.” ⠀⠀ I built walls to guard myself from that pain. That looked like not talking about her, despite longing to. If I was ever asked if I had any siblings, I wouldn’t mention her (and it crushed me). I suppressed this core part of my identity. ⠀⠀ While we weren’t able to live our lives together, I have always felt strongly connected to her. ⠀⠀ As a little girl I would see wildflowers growing alongside the road from my view in the backseat of my parents car. I thought the daises and Black Eyed Susan’s were the most beautiful things I had ever seen - and in them, I saw Lacey Jean. ⠀⠀ I would play with my dolls, and talk to her as if she were there. ⠀⠀ I would stare up into the night sky searching for the star that I thought was her (usually the tiniest or brightest I could find). ⠀⠀ It has taken me many years and a lot of “work” to reclaim my twin-ness and to be able to connect with her, not just the sadness. ⠀⠀ I’m not hiding this part of me anymore. ⠀⠀ I am Casey Jean, twin to Lacey Jean. ⠀⠀ I was, am, and will always be a twin. ⠀⠀ This blend, Heart, was created for her. The day Broadway shut down, my entire family, including my grandparents, were on their way to see Tina. My grandfather would see it for the first time.. The trip was canceled and now I am unsure if they will ever know what kept me from them for so long. My uncle was here and so excited, now may he Rest In Peace and Power. 🙏🏾 A package arrived. I spent some time at Katy Prairies Indiangrass Preserve this weekend walking through the tall grasses that provide habitats for wildlife native to the Texas coastal plains and serve as natural flood mitigation via their long root systems that draw water deep down into the soil during the rains. I know that the reconstructed microcosms I create back at the studio after a good nature soak are interpretive outputs, and not necessarily scientifically accurate, but cloches are my favorite design platform because of how well they lend themselves to demonstrating and honoring the relationships we observe between all living things in an environment. They remind me of how beauty, growth, and stability are all dependent on a delicate balance of forces both biotic and abiotic.
