I’ve been in the sport for 5 years now and I’m still shocked at how little injuries are addressed or talked about. I think it’s important to normalize them. They happen. And they happen to all of us. Even when we feel like we are doing a lot of things right. A bad ankle sprain that had been causing me issues for months has turned out to be an avulsion fracture of my medial malleolus. I didn’t think I’d find myself sidelined again so soon. It has left me with a lot of thoughts. Some are crazy, some are weird, some hopeful; but all of them are real. Here is a look into an injured runners 🧠 : - getting injured is frustrating as hell - being injured is humbling as hell - I am going to completely give up on running; retirement please - I am filled with joy thinking of running again and being back with my community - my confidence is tied to my running more than I like to admit - I can be confident and successful without running -I feel like a useless piece of crap -I’m happier than ever - I am happy to be rid of some of the neuroticism associated with running - I’m still neurotic - I don’t HAVE to do anything I don’t love doing - your body needs recovery & rest - no rest for the wicked! These thoughts occur on the hourly/daily/weekly, and are often very contradictory. But that’s okay. It’s part of the process. Who can relate??? I am temporarily living in park city, with new plans, training for absolutely nothing, getting humbled by new sports and encounters and growing more than I thought possible. It is 100% not by plan. But that’s okay. Let’s try to keep treating ourselves with respect, listening to what makes our hearts beat, and always taking time to look like a noob and laugh. And let’s stop avoiding talking about the real shit, the shit no one wants to admit, but that makes us all human. Love 💕 to you all! A note on renaming routes from She Moves Mountains co-founder @lizzyvanpatten: Last week I agreed to take over running social media for @highdesertclimbers in a volunteer capacity. It is my hope to increase representation and diversify the narrative we tell about climbing in central Oregon while advocating for the protection and care of the stolen lands we recreate on. After learning about the work they have been doing I am psyched to provide my skill set to highlight their efforts as well as provide ways to get involved. Starting with the renaming of routes. “We don’t have all of the answers but through education, stewardship, and collaboration we are working to diversify our climbing areas and make them welcoming to people of color, people from different socio-economic backgrounds, and marginalized communities. Our first step is to address the renaming of routes that are discriminatory. We acknowledge the work that has been put in by BIPOC over the years, namely @mighty_mutomo whose work was stolen by Mountain Project, to address this issue. While the history of renaming routes is troubled and complicated, we are grateful to share that our request to rename offensive routes has been met with an open mind by the Smith Rock State Park guidebook author, Alan Watts. In fact, he started the process before we reached out. As we attempt to compile this list we found an insightful post by Nina Williams (@sheenigans) which provided a helpful summary of how to approach the task, ‘Distinguish between immature/ vulgar/ crude names and racist/ sexist/ ableist/ homophobic/ transphobic/ ethnocentric/ anti-Semitic names. Keep the vulgar names and toss the names that are historically violent and exclusive against entire communities of people. How do we draw that line? Imperfectly. But it must be drawn.’ So far we have compiled a list of 20 route names that we find to be discriminatory or offensive. Now we are asking for your input. Are there route names you would like to see changed before the new Smith Rock guide book goes to publishing? Things on my mind in 2020 Part 1...... Conceiving Harpies and getting to work alongside some brilliant arists such as @yourlucky_star who made these images for Harpies 👯♀️🏳️🌈 👯♂️ fills me with gratitude. These images encompass so much I think about class, sex, work, Britishness and the farce that is UK politics. As we are about to endure another 4 years of Tory rule, the inevitable is going to happen; the rich will get richer and the poor get poorer with the number of people living under the poverty line in the UK to rise, 5 million children. The living working wage stands at a unrealistic £8.21 an hour which leaves the most vulnerable having to make difficult choices under pressure. Some turn to work that is in high demand, better paid but yet criminalised and deregulated, which can result in leaving those people at the hands of the state. As a person who has the privilege of presenting my gender the right way, my race the acceptable proximity to whiteness and my body on the right side of constructed beauty standards, I could work in a environment that meant I was safe, autonomous, very well paid and empowered to the point you can be under a white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. I didnt need the money, I wanted to go to art school to study queer theory and perfomance art. My choice to dance was half research half earning potential, my decision came from a standpoint of agency. Therefore as intersectional feminist I have a responsibility to bring awareness to those who arent as fortunate as I was. It really is time for us to turn our attention to those in the most precarious of situations and status turning to work out of desperation for survival in the UK. Work in the desire industries is legitmate work whether or not your moral compose starts twitching behind your net curtains when thinking about the intimacy involved (the definition of intimacy well thats another conversation). So abolition isnt really a realistic or ideal goal at this point in human history but trying to keep people safe is. I think that’s it for me this season in Yosemite. It was kind of an uneventful Fall as far as climbing goes. Last spring was very successful for me on El Cap and I ended up ticking off all my 2019 goals. Then for some reason I kinda had a lazy summer with training and spent most of August doing easy solos in the High Sierra. That was great but I came to the Valley in mid September not fully prepared. I put a bit of work into trying to free The Nose in a push but after my first attempt it became clear that I just wasn’t in right shape for it. I actually had plans a couple days ago to make a speed run up The Shield with Jim Reynolds but bailed because I tore half my toe nail off the night before while walking barefoot into the woods to take a piss 😭. It’s always a shame to leave the Valley and especially now after my no send season. However it’s made easier because I’m headed off on a rad desert road trip with some good friends! FREE SOLO - It was such a thrill to complete a free solo (no ropes) climb of the Upper Exum route on Grand Teton this week. It’s been on the bucket list for a while. There is something so powerful in pushing the edges of your comfort zone in a way that requires full focus. It was a thrill to climb around in these beautiful mountains relying solely on my own hands and feet. What made it a perfect day was the company of two amazing friends. The man the myth @garrettmadison1 and the world class adventure photographer 📷 @tedhesser who snapped this pic of me. I highly recommend checking out his work...it’s all time! *To be clear I do not recommend tackling this route in this style unless you are a very confident climber...and even then I encourage safety over all else. For me this was a personal decision to try this route in this style based on the time I’ve spent in these mountains. Swipe right for the whole uncut footage of me (top-rope) sending and almost failing the second last pitch of yesterday’s multi-pitch 😂 Short summary of my first ever multi-pitch route: It was sooo amazing, but also so so exhausting! The hike to the base of the petit clocher du Portalet the day before was already so exhausting that I had real doubts if I will be able to climb a few hundred meters the next day 😂 Also the short and freezing night in the tent wasn’t the best rest I could have asked for 😅 (I wouldn’t have changed it for a night in a hotel though, I loved the adventurous vibes 🤩) But all the effort was definitely worth it! I enjoyed the climbing so much and the view was just breath-taking. You all know that I usually really struggle with the height... but all the single routes were so easy, that to my surprise I was way less sacred than I imagined, and I was able to just enjoy the climbing. Also it definitely helped that I climbed all pitches top-rope 😅 The second last pitch was another story though 🙈 It wasn’t so hard, but super exposed and so freaking high, with bad and slippery (non-existent) foot holds.. Continuing #vanlight || On our first day in Tucson, @rakoooontz , @tanner.j.ward, and I drove up Lemon. Our goal was to ride down N Mt. Lemmon Rd (dirt), then shoot on the way up. As we ascended the mountain, I think it was Tanner who started noticing the temperature dropping rather quickly. Then snow. Then our plans changed. As we got to the top of the mountain, we knew we weren’t ready for the conditions. Grant was in shorts, Tanner’s from Arkansas, and I’m soft. Since it was the first time shooting with Tanner, I set up his bike (the @otsocycles Warakin Stainless) while he got dressed and prepared to freeze. Grant created a playlist and giggled. This is how these things go; it’s never as you plan, and it’s always a mess. As they finished up, I went down the road we planned to shoot on and it was perfect. Giant rocks, beautiful green trees, mud, and now snow too. They got out, we make some images, and all of us froze out asses off. The guys got back in the van, and it started to snow heavier. Andy-Hampsten-on-the-Gavia heavy snow. Around that moment is when I shot the image of Tanner, peaking out the door, staying engaged in what was happening, but also desperately trying to stay warm. As the guys started riding again, Grant immediately and playfully put a shoulder into Tanner. Закопалась 🙈🔺 _________ Так я подумала сегодня, когда поняла, что вернулась из поездки уже почти два дня назад, и даже ещё не поняла, что со мной произошло) меня настолько захватили привычные ежедневные дела и заботы, что я совсем перестала обращать внимание как на внешнее, так и на внутреннее, на события вокруг и свою реакцию на них Собственно поэтому захотелось написать вот это все ______ Это была замечательная традиционная поездка в Москву, но, как водится, она промчалась очень быстро( стоило только приехать обратно, как в жизнь снова ворвались суета, скорость, попытки все успеть и тд и тд и тд И только сейчас я начала осознавать, какая же это была классная поездка, и вообще какая это была веха в истории моей жизни 😄 Мы впервые собрались всей группой в путешествие, и это было супер круто! Мои товарищи по учебе, которые на фото, и которые за кадром - спасибо вам за эту поездку, за теплоту и искренность! This year has been a lot, for everyone. We planned and cancelled events. Planned and cancelled again. Finally deciding to throw in the towel for 2020 when I could no longer maintain my emotional well being. Many of you chose to wait it out, opting for credit instead of a refund (which we are endlessly grateful for). @mightymaddymo is one of those people. She was scheduled to take a crack climbing clinic and a two day multi-pitch clinic in March. We rescheduled twice until FINALLY, working through the @bendrockgym, we were able to get out to Smith Rock State Park. It was an amazing two days of teaching/learning. It reminded me why I do this. And it was so inspiring to hear where she has taken climbing and how much further she wants to go. Thank you to everyone who has supported us over this past year. It has meant the world to me and my team. A big thanks to our sponsors @blackdiamond and @thenorthface for sticking with us despite the fact we haven’t had much to give. We are looking forward to 2021 and are working on obtaining permits to host clinics/retreats in Moab and Joshua Tree. Honest words by @splatterling.anke ・・・ If you’re curious about the Discotrux and my experience with them - this is for you! The Discotrux are the first wide trucks that I have ever tried and I was a little bit nervous. But that was for no reason, because I loved them from the very first moment that I put my feet on the ground. They made me feel comfortable, stable and confident. Also the installation was very easy and only took a few minutes. The Discotrux come with interchangeable parts and you can choose between 7cm and 10cm, which makes them unique! The weight is 145g. The angle is lower than standard trucks and reduces the wheelbase. They are made of aluminium, which is strong and durable. Instead of a pivot pin the trucks have a ball. Regarding the agility, I expected to be more affected by the wide trucks than I actually was. I assume that it’s because the pivot ball increases the action and the lower angle reduces the wheelbase. I’m skating with the Discotrux for a few weeks now and I feel that they contribute to improve my skating skills. I learned many new tricks and feel very confident, especially when skating bowls. Although I was afraid to switch from narrow to wide trucks in the beginning, I’m very happy with this decision now and I can’t imagine to go back to standard trucks for Skateparks and Street. Out I go to complete unfinished business on the Kings Canyon High Basin Route that was created by @andrewskurka . Last summer I completed the 1st quarter of this route from Lodgepole to Kearsarge Pass. This 111 mile diverse and rugged section will travel cross-country and on trail . We hope to complete our loop from Kearsarge and back across the Sierras to Kearsarge in 8 days (I packed a ton of food). Tomorrow I am heading out with @dropnroll to complete this bad boy. Hi makers! I thought some of you might be interested in my process for making Shinobus headpiece. Swipe for all the goodies and the description is below. As with all of Shinobus textiles, this piece is self-dyed by spray gun and steamed using @jacquardproducts green label silk dyes. Its the same formulation I used in the reverse applique border of my happi. I sketched a shape I liked which combines elements of several differing manga panels and then digitized it in Hatch. After exporting the digitized shape to my cricut, I ironed on a medium heavyweight stabilizer and cut the pieces which saves a lot of time trimming in the hoop. Since I was doing two pieces per hoop, I had about 16,000 stitches ahead of me and floated two pieces of stabilizer in the hoop. The first thing that was embroidered was a placement line. With my trusty Spray n Bond, I placed the appliqué within the lines and went on to the next step which to used a zigzag to tack down the edges. The next step was to put down the green. I used two close colors to get a blend that had a more organic texture to it. The first pass is a bit sparse and the second pass fills in the gaps. I then moved to the big to tatami (purple). If you look ahead, youll note I actually dod this in several pieces, but to avoid too many tie-ins, I used one big underlay which helps loft the tatami. The tatami was put down in segments meant to give it three dimensions along those vein lines and then I lined it with a black triple backstitch to pop it. A satin border was put around the edge, but I intentionally did not add too much underlay as this mostly exists to give a clean tearaway edge for the stabilizer and it will act as an underlay for when I piece it together back to front and combine it with one hand satin. Finally, I used a blend of Jacquard textile paint and Lumiere to paint black veins in the main body and into the gaps between the tatami segments. Making a Butterfly . 🦋The Hungry Caterpillar book has been resurfaced in our home. Somehow my daughter wasn’t too interested to this book when she was younger so it was merely stranded on the bookshelf until last week. She suddenly took it out, asked me to read it for her over and over again or even read it independently by the bed . 🦋It excites her to follow the journey of the little caterpillar who begins eating everything in sight. Finally, it is no longer hungry and no longer small. The big, fat caterpillar always got her laugh out loud. She noticed the effect of those huge amount of food and even brought Daddy Pig (from the Peppa Pig) into the discussion. “The caterpillar is so fat, just like Daddy Pig!” Back to the story, it built a cocoon around himself and finally emerges as a beautiful butterfly. She also learned new term of “metamorphosis” as “transformation” process from caterpillar to butterfly . 🦋Keywords such as “caterpillar,” “cocoon,” and “butterfly” along with fruits or food names shown on the book have been repeatedly mentioned . 🦋Yesterday, I added a simple invitation to create art-craft for her related to the book: to make a butterfly. I cut out 2 printed colorful butterfly wings, popsicle stick, glue and a butterfly outline for her to glue those 3 items . 🦋She is currently having fun retelling the story with her own beautiful butterfly to her daddy . 🦋This is us playing ‘Mini Beasts’ theme for Summer Bingo grid #august_play by @monthly_play team. 1/3: FINALISTS 2020 GFW x YKK Accessories Award This evening, we’ll be announcing the winner of the GFW x YKK Accessories Award 2020! 🎉😍 But first we want to showcase the 3 finalists work! Thank you to all the finalists this year who took part, the work has been extremely strong this year! Brandon Haley De Montfort University Brandon’s project was inspired by the Kimono, with a broad history spanning centuries. ‘I am intrigued by both the attention to detail in how a garment is treated, cut and folded, including the minimalistic aesthetic.’ The shoe consists of 8 panels just as a kimono does, white leather was used to highlight the vegetable tan which was moulded and hand stitched.
