Tejaswini Rai, a student of M Arch Built Heritage 2018-20 batch, Sushant School of Art and Architecture, submitted the conservation thesis named ‘Reclaiming cultural landscape of Rajasthans Braj- Nathdwara . The thesis was mentored by Bhawna Dandona, Parul G Munjal, and Suruchi Shah. The conservation thesis was an attempt to look at the new approaches for the urban heritage conservation of a temple town Nathdwara, a significant cultural landscape site. Various networks and subnetworks were identified which were the tangible and intangible components of the Brajbhoomi (original place of the temple). The identified networks were further gone through the processes of value assessment, and strategies were developed for the conservation of the town while understanding the region as a single heritage resource. Exhibition: Callout for Submissions We want to feature the artwork of the autistic community of Wales in an exhibition at the Aubergine Café documenting our collective experiences and perspectives over the last 6 months. The theme of this exhibition is ‘Distance: Autistic Perspectives of 2020’ We also want to showcase your work in an ‘Artist of the Week’ segment on our social media and website. The artwork you submit can be one of your existing works or you can create something completely new and original. If you’re autistic and creative, we want to see what you’ve got. Ways of sending your artwork to us can be worked out on an individual basis but we can pay the postage for any pieces that will fit into a ‘Large Letter’ (i.e an A4 padded envelope no more than 2.5cm by 35.3cm, 2.5cm wide and weighing less than 750g.) Please note that we are not able to return artwork sent to us at this time so you may want to send copies rather than originals. Nor will any of the artworks be up for sale though this is something we will be looking into for future exhibitions. For more information, get in touch at hello@auberginecafe.co.uk. We’re happy to answer any questions you have about the exhibition or the submission process. Let’s keep it goin with space! Here’s two more space lessons we covered. The first project they used stencils to reflect the order of the planets from the sun. The second was held after a discussion about the sun. Decided to use this as an dual opportunity for them to work on their fine motor skills through cutting. Today, I said goodbye to the first job I fell in love with doing. Before midnight Friday, eager patrons lined up outside of Bradys Bar in Traverse City. Restaurants, bars, breweries and small retailers in Grand Traverse and 31 other counties spanning the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula were the first businesses allowed to reopen Friday on a regional level as part of Whitmers gradual reopening of the states economy, and Bradys was one of at least two establishments in Traverse City to take full advantage and reopen at 12:01 a.m. Friday after being closed for more than nine weeks because of the coronavirus pandemic. Bradys is now operating at half of its 85-person capacity, as required by Whitmers reopening order, the bars owner Nolen Sleder said. The dozen bar stools have been removed and replaced with four X-markings 6 feet apart on the old tile floor where patrons must stand and order or consume beer and mixed drinks. And bottles of liquid hand sanitizer for employee and patron use are as prevalent on tables and the bar as bottles of ketchup. Read more via link in profile. They say theres an old curse: #mayyouliveininterestingtimes. Well, the last week and a half have certainly been interesting. I got up on the morning of Tuesday the 8th and headed off to work. The first four photos you see here are what I saw 3/4 of a mile up the road from my house. I drove through it to the next intersection and found a county deputy there. He told me the high winds had downed a power line and started the fire. That fire later went on to burn nearly 550 acres. I turned around and went back home, taking the video as I went. I spent the next several hours preparing to evacuate. When the call came, the fire had gotten a bit closer. Thats the smoke you see in the fifth photo. The Beachie Creek fire and the Riverside fire had also advanced considerably in my general direction. I have to say here that I was extremely fortunate during this event in that I had a small army of friends who were ready, willing, and able to drop everything and help me get out as well as offering a place to stay for the cats and I. @mrsquicksilver and Barlow were down in Klamath Falls, and so they were safe and I didnt have to worry about them. I monitored the situation as best I could through various channels, and the best source of information for my specific area turned out to be a community Facebook group. From what I gathered, even though we were still under evacuation orders the next morning, everything seemed well enough to go back and check on the house. The seventh and eighth photos were taken on the drive back at about 11am. It was actually darker than that, the camera lightened them up quite a bit. The house was still ok, so I went back to where I was staying and hung out with the cats. They were stressed, but adapting. I came home today, and all is well. The cats are happy, and I am looking forward to getting a full nights sleep. Through all of this, there emerged numerous examples of the community coming together to help their neighbors, volunteers fighting the fires, and leadership and bravery in abundance. Its a Water Street Wednesday reveal! Last Wednesdays image was of 350-356 Water Street, built for $3,500 as a house and accessory building for Willard Perry McDonald in 1901 and now home to Golden Rule and Ace General Store. We know that these buildings served several families in their earlier years and later businesses here included Excelsior Family Chiropractic, Christian Counseling Services, Three French Hens, Annie Marie Photography, Fleur du Jour and Ivivva. But the man who built them, Willard Perry McDonald, remains an enigma. He and wife Rachel appeared to be a prominent Excelsior power couple whose activities were frequently featured in Excelsior and Twin Cities newspapers. He was an attorney and later a mining broker, in demand for his July 4th orations on the Commons - and she was a civic dynamo, serving on committees and entertaining often at their lovely home. However, the newspaper stories took a turn in 1903 with an account of his arrest for embezzling $40,000. And after his death in 1907, he made national news again when his three concurrent wives went to court to claim their inheritance - including Mattie McDonald of Arkansas - mother of his four children - who finally understood the reason for her husbands frequent, lengthy absences. We have brought them into our lives, often to fit into our circumstances with very little preparation and often a lack of understanding and empathy. We can change that. We can change the narrative that dogs should listen when told what to do and how to do it. We can help them overcome fears, trauma and a past that has impacted their development. We shouldn’t aim to “fix” them, rather, embrace them for who they are while improving their quality of life. We have a big announcement...WERE MOVING TO CANAL PARK! Over the coming weeks well be preparing the new space, located at 395 S Lake Avenue, the former Spirit Bay location. You can literally see the Lift Bridge and hear the ships coming in just a couple blocks away from our new front door! Our goal is an early November opening at the new location, at least for the retail portion. Were also shortening the gallery name from Tischer Photographic Gallery to just Tischer Gallery. Well most likely only have a soft opening this fall due to COVID-19, but plan to have a Grand Re-opening once the pandemic is under control and restrictions are lifted. The three years weve spent downtown have been a good opportunity to experience full-time brick and mortar retail, but in order for our business to grow and reach our target demographic were relocating. The new location is also 25% larger, which will allow more space for artwork production. In the meantime, our downtown location will remain open Fridays & Saturdays 10-6, or by appointment until further notice. Im beyond excited to get working on the new space!
