Every week 13 million items of clothing end up in UK landfill. Per year 336,000 tonnes of used clothing - usually cheap fast fashion made by exploited or enslaved BIPOC garment workers and comprised of synthetic fibres and toxic dyes that harm the environment - go to landfill. But things can change. @oxfamgb is challenging people to join #SecondHandSeptember and pledge to shop only second hand for 30 days or more, giving clothes a longer life and giving yourself the time to build up more sustainable habits to take into the future. This year that has led many to reevaluate the kinds of lives we lead in the Global North; lives full of overconsumption, unsustainable growth, rampant capitalism and exploitation. Lives that dont fulfil or empower people or the planet. But we have to remember there are other ways. Models can be changed, systems can be dismantled and redesigned. It doesnt have to be like this, we can build something different. 🌻 So thats why I support #SecondHandSeptember. Not just because I enjoy thrifting, (though I do) but because I believe in switching to circular and regenerative systems. The „ Spiegel Lamp“ featured here in the entrance hall at the Spiegel Publishing House in Hamburg in 1969. The designing of Spiegel Publishing Headquarters in Hamburg is one of Verner’s most important interior projects. For the renowned news magazine, which moved into its new modernistic building in 1969 located on the Ost-West Strasse in Hamburg, Panton designed the entrance area with courtyard and foyer, the lobby, the dining hall including a bar, the swimming pool in the building’s basement for employees, the room for editorial staff conferences plus a lobby-like waiting area, as well as the colour concept for the hallways of the administrative and editorial office building. One of the most important design elements here was again the colour scheme, which contributed significantly to Pantons typical fusion of spatial dimensions. Apart from the furniture, he used his own designs (lamps, textiles, wall coverings) for the furnishing of the rooms. Of particular importance here is the “Spiegel lamp” specially developed for this commission, which was used to clad walls and ceilings. In 2011 the publishing house moved to a new building in Hamburg’s Hafencity, the snack bar was installed in the new building. It is illuminated at night and is visible from the outside through the glass façade. The dining hall, which has been listed as historically significant since the end of 1998, was donated to the city of Hamburg and moved to the @mkg.hamburg . So #arborday is today, the celebration of the trees, just a few days after earth day. These days we all sit mostly at home while nature is far out. Talking of those who live in the cities. Whoever gets to spend this time in the countryside or anywhere close to nature is blessed ✨ This day just like any day since I am here in the city #tlv every cell of my body misses natural surroundings to my day. Sounds of birds, fresh air and cooler breeze, mountain views and quite.. Falling early asleep and being active all day in the nature close to plants, oceans and mountains springs. Of course I am great full for many other aspects of life, like the people who surround me, the interests we have and basically every little moment can be filled with pure joy. But my feet miss the ground Not the concrete made one It’s a while now that I am magnetized to nature. It is calling me to reconnect with it. Turning all my life upside down just for this reason. As human beings we are one with the ground, the air, the waters - and all living things. I know I have the right to choose how to spend this lifetime, and willingly or not I’ve been given the intelligence to think of it and reconsider. I know it’s just the start of my way getting closer to more sustainable way of living. Choosing more responsibly how I manage myself, caring for nature as well as for humans wealth. I feel my awareness slowly unfolding, redesigning perspectives again and again.
