This is a very special piece to us. While developing the concept, we initially focused in on the long, drape silhouette and how it would react with the wind. We wanted it to float yet protect, both belted and open. We liked the idea of exposing all the seams and having it visually delicate, yet strongly constructed. One day we were biking up to our factory in midtown NY and it was a little cooler than normal. We bike everywhere, but the one thing that’s not conducive to biking is a long jacket. “Well, why not make a short version?” “Do we really need another piece that is very similar? Is someone going to buy almost the same coat twice? Isn’t that wasteful? I would want one coat to do both.” As we talked through the why, we realized, “why don’t we make it so it can be both long and short?” We had already made trench coats that zipped off into cropped coats, so would the same concept work here? Then we realized we had a huge advantage with this piece, it’s lightweight. Very lightweight. Unlined parachute fabric lightweight. “Why don’t we just fold it up?” We quickly realized this was easier in concept then in execution. After numerous iterations, concepting and prototypes, we ended with a simple and elegant solution. Finding the right fastener was critical. Because the fabric is so lightweight, anything with relatively large mass would affect the drape. But something too delicate wouldn’t hold. Wide, but thin hand-stitched snaps along the hem and waist allowed us to achieve the look we wanted and gave it the ability to function both as a short and long jacket for varying temperatures & stylings. The light fabric drapes elegantly, allowing for a long, columnesque silhouette. In contrast when the jacket is snapped short & tied at the waist there’s a sculptural, billowing effect. The shapes this piece create exceeded our expectations. A welcome surprise! We are very excited to share this piece.
