Five years ago today I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. But anyway, here’s a photo of me and Andi having a recent lunch at 11,000 feet. Having lunch in the backcountry is definitely one of my favorite things ever, especially since Andi is the Sandwich Master. Find a nice, flat rock, unwrap your snacks, and look at the view. Turned 33 and had the best birthday I could ever ask for 🎂🎈. Another year I get to spend with my family. A healthy and growing baby inside my belly🤰🏽, and a healthy and growing little miss right next to me 👧🏻. A husband who loves me dearly — he invited our closest friends for a bbq today + stayed up late last night baking me birthday cakes👨🏻🍳. Another year and another birthday passes. This year’s was a difficult one. Even as we are coming out of a global crisis, the already hard times have been compounded by the distrust and anger we are all directing towards each other. To top It all off, I lost a very close friend. One whom I looked forward to seeing or hearing from regularly, but now can only be with through some of the great memories we shared. Through those recollections, I’ve reflected much more on why we are here. Times like these are extremely trying, but when you look around you, you realize that family is what really matters the most. Be they of blood or of acquaintance, family is why we are here. This year will be a hard one. It will be far more challenging than any that I’ve had to live through, but I’ll catch my breath and fight on even stronger. I’ll fight for those that mean everything to me. I just found out that today, the first Sunday after Labor Day, is National Grandparents’ Day in the US. I feel like someone just punched me in the gut. My grandfather passed away last Monday. On my grandmother’s birthday. Tomorrow is his funeral. I’ve been numb this past week. I can’t begin to count the number of times I tried to write something profound or select the right pictures to capture what this man meant to me. It paralyzed me every time. Wanted to say thanks for all the support to everybody - between the podcast, citizen clothing, short film, more stand up, and our new web series coming out, y’all have been very kind and engaged and it’s so appreciated. I’m sure everyone’s mental is a little all over the place at the moment with so many unknowns. I’m right there with you. But to all the creatives out there, I hope we find the ability to free ourselves from the need to operate as if all is normal. It doesn’t mean take your foot off the gas, but recognize that there’s a time for running and a time for resting. Make sure you’re resting so when you run again, your stamina is built up. Sadly, not something taught in schools. Many of us learn about it for the first time through yoga, therapy, or #instagram 🤪 At this point many habits are solidified and not necessarily working in your favour. So lots of retraining, rewriting, and repatterning. 👌A couple of my Nervous System Non Negotiables: 1. Sleep well and enough 2. Nature as often and as much as possible 3. Meditation (at about 40 minutes a day spread throughout my day) 4. Puppy love and cuddles (even when she pulls teenager and squiggles away) 5. Movement - yoga, spin, hiking, whatever . James offered this too (LOVE) - even later in life do every day or two “something for no other reason than that you would rather not do it.” Ie. next time you hear yourself say “I don’t have time” make it. Missing Pa Garnett bad. Being home gave me so much, it’s amazing how we in the diaspora have to clammer for our place in the west when we already have a head start in what, for some, can be one of the toughest places in the world to live. I am blessed to have a proud, healthy and loving family who can and always have supported me. I think we gave the same support to my dad when he went back to work in Sierra Leone and when we were kids. It was his dream for us to be there with him. Although it happened later in my life, I bonded with Freetown in a way my dad could have only hoped for. I know he beams with pride and love every time I tell him I’m coming home, or every time he calls me and I insist on speaking Krio because I miss Freetown. It’s home. While I was away I worked on a tree planting project with my dad. The goal is to plant 100,000 trees between now and the end of next year. So far my dad’s been giving himself greys tryna find the money to support this project because ppl mostly don’t give an effff about trees, even though they literally keep us alive! So I started a gofundme. Any donations will go towards transportation of soil, water and of course taking care of the baby trees when they’ve been planted in their new home. I hate asking for shiiiit but this time, it’s for trees and I love trees more than I hate asking for shit.
