She wins a complimentary seasons pass at WH20 this year thanks to her photo submission, which the judges loved, not only for its lighting and composition but also because it showcases the logging history of Cottonwood and how were attempting to prevent more of it on the slopes above the lake. Second prize of a custom-designed KMC Backissue Crate and cans of @nelsonbrewingcompany Spruce Tip Ale was awarded to @tubesofafeather for capturing the child-like magic that Cottonwood Lake offers. Cycling Australia to join AusCycling: Cycling Australia announces that it today held a General Meeting for members to vote on the AusCycling proposal. Six of Cycling Australia’s state and territory associations voted in favour of the resolutions with one voting against and one abstention. The AusCycling resolutions were special resolutions, requiring 75% of members to vote in favour for approval. Accordingly, the resolutions were approved. Cycling Australia and the six state and territory associations that voted in favour will now work with MTBA and BMX Australia and the seven BMX state and territory associations that have voted to join AusCycling to launch the new entity. It is the largest nature conservation area in Ukraine. The parks area covers 2,613.16 km² (645,725.9 acre). There are 1,700 different types of flora, 60 of which are included in the Red Book of Ukraine. “WWI History” Along the Australian beach front not far from his home, Sam Z. dug up a stunning piece of sterling silver with his AT Pro. He found it only a couple of inches deep in the sandy soil. It is a medal issued in 1917 to wives & mothers of soldiers who served in WWI. It was made by Stokes & Sons, who produced many of Australia’s medals & medallions. Antonio García è un abitante della Sierra. Come quasi tutti i campesinos della regione, è venuto da fuori. La sua famiglia si è trasferita nella Sierra quando era piccolo e da allora ha sempre vissuto e lavorato nella selva per conto terzi. Antonio ha svolto i lavori agricoli più disparati ma la sua specialità è sempre stata tagliare alberi per vendere legname o costruire case. 🌳🌱 Sebbene le capacità e conoscenze di Antonio in campo agricolo siano davvero ampie, non ha mai percepito uno stipendio fisso e non ha mai posseduto una terra o una casa tutta sua. 👉🏼Nel 2018, ha iniziato a collaborare con Environomica come aiutante alla riforestazione. Oggi Antonio ha 54 anni ed è il gestore della riforestazione nella valle del Río Buritaca per conto di Environomica. 👈🏼 Guadagna uno stipendio fisso che gli ha permesso di accantonare risparmi ed iniziare un business di prodotti organici in vendita presso le strutture turistiche della zona. Second carpy carp on my local urban river. Making an appearance for the second time. I always have something to say so here goes. 😂 Quite a few people have DM’ed me asking me why I like chasing carp and comment on how it’s a disgusting fish or are genuinely interested in chasing for the first time themselves. My message to people in regards to why I chase carp is this: ▫️I don’t have to prepare for a long drive/full day for trout. ▫️I get to sight fish and stay stimulated from the “hunt”. I walk many miles after a day of trying to find happy carp. ▫️No freshwater fish has taken me to my backing on a 7# besides carp. ▫️They are a challenging fish to catch on the fly: you have to figure out how to walk and approach them in a way to not spook them, observe their activity and determine what fly to use based on how they’re feeding, how to cast so that the fly is presented to them in a way to not spook them, get them interested in your fly, determining the subtleties of when the take actually is, planning for all possible obstructions in the water that the fish could dart to, adjusting drag, etc. There’s a lot that goes into this carp on the fly thing as I’m figuring out and it’s never ending mental stimulation. With a heavy heart we say goodbye to Michael O’Brien who died on Thursday, July 16th. Mike was an instructor at UCLA on landscape architecture, a native and sustainable plant expert, a LONG-time employee with the City of Los Angeles ending his career as a Planner. Most relevantly, Mike was an active member of the Steering Committee for the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park (CCSEP), the Neighborhood Issues Committee for Echo Park Improvement Association (EPIA), and a collaborator with other Echo Park community organizations. Mike led many publicly attended walks throughout the community with Echo Park Historical Society and CCSEP. He was also an incredibly valuable member of EPIAs Neighborhood Issues Committee, giving EPIA insights into what was relevant to city decision-makers who would receive EPIA recommendations regarding Echo Park projects that were requesting discretionary entitlements. In the early 2000s, Mike was involved in a concerted effort to try to end the south end of the 2 Freeway - the “2 Freeway Terminus Project,” in a more graceful manner with the late Judy Raskin and Peter Lassen. During this time, monies were obtained to re-landscape Glendale Boulevard and Mike envisioned the pine dominated treescape that we see in the median today, distinct from the palm tree or jacaranda-dominated treescapes around Los Angeles. There was a palette of other plants that went with these pines, but city maintenance workers, through ignorance or lack of care, diligently killed off every one of them except the rosemary that you still see today – much to Michael’s expletive-laden chagrin. Mike did not suffer fools lightly. With CCSEP, Mike recognized that the palm trees on the Avenue of the Palms were dying from disease and old age - “Palmageddon,” and came up with the plan you see in motion today, with a disease-resistant species planted in between the aging historic trees. Mike also worked on the nomination for Historical Status for Echo Park Lake with Cultural Affairs and a nomination for the WWI Memorial Grove that was recently restored in Elysian Park. I am sure I am missing some other important achievements; Mike was prolific in his life. - @elysianparkla on Instagram

Veganism and plant-based diets are often thought of as recent movements led largely by the western world, but this myth is dangerous, as it erases a long history of largely plant-based precolonial diets followed by many peoples around the world. In fact, many pre-colonial indigenous diets featured a variety of foods cultivated from the land, such as beans, corn, squash, (known as the three sisters), tomatoes, peppers, and fruits like berries! Many animal products widely consumed in the US today actually came along with Europeans through colonization, where European foods such as meat and bread were thought to be superior to native traditional foods (despite the fact that many indigenous peoples actually had longer lifespans than Europeans at that time). The colonization of food has a deep history, and eating plant based can in many cases connect us more deeply with our roots than many might think!
