I know firsthand the unique challenges of being a pregnant worker. I planned to teach a class before my daughter’s scheduled C-section, but my assistant cancelled the class. While I appreciated her concern, I was frustrated someone else made that decision for me. As the only single mom of young kids elected to Congress, I’m committed to being a voice for working mothers in Orange County and across our country. Today, I was proud to vote for legislation that would establish new protections for pregnant workers. Despite current protections in the law, pregnancy discrimination continues to burden working women and their families. I turned my studio office into a class room, I’m working with my wonderful couples who are sadly having to cancel or postpone their weddings, I finished 2 pieces of art, launched a new product, learned a lot about shipping fresh flowers and creating video, learned even more about or local flower community and contributed to the Collective Wisdom Magazine. Hi! I’m Emma! With so many new friends on here, I thought it would be good to start showing you the faces behind Poppy. My mom and I started out working with flowers in her kitchen years ago, then moved onto her garage, and eventually took the plunge to open a floral design studio here in the Antelope Valley. We a small but mighty team of amazing women and a awesome dudes who specialize in wedding floral design serving the greater Los Angeles, but have grown and shifted to also serve our friends here more on a local level and show our beautiful valley some much needed flower LOVE. A little bit about me- I am a wife to an amazing man and mother of three sweet little girls. I have always had an affinity towards flowers, especially lilacs, honeysuckle, roses, and the wildflowers the enrapture our desert floor every year. I am a design junkie, a creative at heart. It’s almost impossible for me to look at a space and not start dreaming, or be in nature and not revel at why it is. I like to think that it’s that curiosity that keeps the love of flower arranging alive in me. The possibilities are endless! When I’m not workin and doing my thing here, you can usually find me at home- preferably with my friends and loved ones loaded in and hosting them with a good meal, good music, and a good cocktail. I am passionate about cultivating creativity and community in our valley. I’m an AV girl born and raised, and my relationship with our hometown has grown through the seasons and I’ve come to regard her as beautiful, loaded with potential, and home to some of the most incredible humans I’ve ever met. It’s where my family is, my wonderful church, my friends (or as I like that call them.. FRAMILY), and a source of so much inspiration. I am so glad you are here! Last week we were able to complete another FLOWERBOMB4LOVE! I got to thinking of people who I’ve been close with that have been injured, diagnosed with serious physical medical conditions and those who have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety or addiction issues. It’s amazing how we humans rally around those whose illness we better understand (or think we understand) yet those suffering from mental illness are often doing so alone or with very few people in their court. Often, the best way we can support those we care about is by simply showing up and ...listening. I want to be more conscious of this in my life so am sharing my intention in these little squares. So proud to say that this bouquet is filled to the brim with locally and domestically grown product. The dahlias, gomphrenia, Japanese anemones, China asters, love in a puff (celosia & rudbeckia not pictured) were all from @fairviewfarmandflowers and the California garden roses were from @gracerosefarm. Accompanying product from my wholesaler @dvflora. I love buying locally when I can and it’s SO important for a variety of reasons. 1) it drastically reduces our environmental flower footprint. I drove one hour to pick these up from the farm where they were grown. Otherwise, they would be grown abroad, flown to one of our port cities then flown or trucked again to a wholesaler that would then truck it to me. 2)it provides me with the freshest flowers. Dahlias in an arbor on a hot day?? That’s only possible if they were cut from the field the day before and went straight into water. They were passed straight to me in a bucket that went straight to the installation. The more you handle flowers, the more susceptible they are to bruising and wilting. 3) it supports the local growers and farms in our area! For a lot, farming is their only source of income. We live in the garden state!!! We are fullll of farms!!!! I’ve been way more aware of birds lately. I’ve never seen one quite as stunning as this. The ruby throated hummingbird. The shimmering emerald green of its back didn’t seem like it could be real. It has an iridescent red throat that looks dark gray if not in the right light, weirdly moving to see it appear and disappear. This bird landed right in front of me. We think it may have been slightly injured as it spent an unusual amount of time resting right at my feet, which gave me time to study it and take these pics. But it flew away thankfully in that incredible zig-zag hover mode seemingly defying the laws of physics. I try not to read into such things, but this seemed so strange and unique and, well, beautiful. I really have never seen colors like that before. - @briandarcyjames on Instagram

Because this triple digit weather is KILLER! 🔥🌞 So along with drinking my coriander infusions, avoiding salty, sour, & spicy foods, I’ll be making these yummy treats to stay cool! 💦🌿😅 . . 🌟Crust: 1/2 cup almonds (or pecans or pumpkin seeds) 1/2 cup soft pitted medjool dates 3 Tbsp coconut shreds 1/4 tsp cardamom powder 1/4 tsp Himalayan salt . 🌟 Filling: 2 cups of fresh young Thai coconut meat scraped out of the shell & washed off to ensure no hard shell pieces (if unavail, substitute 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut & 2/3 cup coco yogurt) 1/3 cup melted coconut oil 1/3 cup coconut nectar or maple syrup 1 Tbsp Shatavari powder Zest of 3 key limes or 2 regular limes Juice of 4 key limes or 2 regular limes 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 tsp Himalayan salt 2 limes cut into 1/4 slices for garnish . 🌟 Method: 1. Pulse nuts + dates in food processor until a sticky dough forms. 2. Add 2-3 Tablespoons of crust into tartlet or lined cupcake pan. 3. Starting from the center, use your fingers to press down and up the sides of the pan. Continue until crust is evenly distributed. Set aside. 4. In a large blender, combine all filling ingredients and blend on high for 2 minutes until very smooth and fully combined, this may take some time. 5. Taste and adjust flavours as needed (add more lime, salt, sweetener). 6. Assemble the tarts: Once the crusts have cooled, add 3-4 Tbsp filling into each tartlet. 7. Garnish with lime slice and/or coconut shreds & let chill in fridge for 10 mins. 8. Enjoy fresh as a midday treat. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. 💚💚💚 . Shatavari is in the mix as an herbal spike, which is a powerful rejuvenating female tonic in Ayurveda. Known for it’s cooling & moistening abilities to the female reproductive system, Shatavari roots are both bitter and sweet in taste 😋 meaning that they first cleanse the body and then nourish it. This gorgeous Belted Kingfisher was admitted as another window collision victim, but the good news is that she was just recently released! We are admitting many migratory birds right now. Birds are very susceptible to hitting windows, particularly during migration, when they are on the move. They often cannot perceive the solid surface until it is too late due to reflections and/or perceived “fly through tunnels” when 2 windows are back to back or on a corner. The birds that are admitted to our hospital are lucky, but sadly many, many other birds are not. Please take action steps to make your windows bird safe! You know those days where just everything does not go according to plan? That was definitely me getting this bouquet together for a styled shoot that @c.payne.photography was doing (as you can probably tell by the bouquet photo featuring my pantry door in the background). My normal wholesaler had closed earlier than I thought and I was scrambling to find flowers that would work for what I had in mind. After going to 10+ different stores, I finally found SOMETHING that went together and was able to get it to work, and was very pleasantly surprised and happy with the result! I’m sure my fellow wedding vendors can attest that sometimes everything just goes wrong and you have to deal with the punches, but sometimes it turns out beautifully. So to all my fellow vendors, I feel you and support you when it feels like everything is going wrong and you’re so nervous to disappoint your clients. To all my current or future clients, be patient with us. Sometimes we get to be human + mess up but we will do everything we can to make things right for you. For #FabfloristFriday, we want to put the spotlight on #aniskacreations. Based in Miami, Florida, we have been huge fans of this mother-daughter team ever since our producer Nancy Molina shared their work with us. Plus today is #nationaldaughtersday The work of Ana and daughter Anais is just so exuberant and bright that you want to smile the moment you see it. Check out this dahlia arrangement which is our lead photo. The coral, peach and raspberry colors blend so seamlessly and notice how they created a slight “V” section slanted ever so slightly at the top for some air and intrigue. And then there is this vintage arrangement. The pale pink glads and astilbe create a bouncy height and sweep over the vase. It’s as though the flowers have stretching arms announcing, “I’m up and ready to please.” You can almost smell those lillies positioned as welcoming special focal points. The light lavender arrangement is more dreamy and subdued. It just exudes a desire to sit by it and read a book or have a cup of tea. Then look at how they created a family party using the same color palette but in such an exciting energized way.
