Back on the the bike! 👍 Een update Inmiddels ben ik alweer 3 dagen thuis. De teleurstelling was groot na het uitvallen in de Tour afgelopen vrijdag. Ik zat goed in de koers maar één ongelukkige valpartij en het seizoen is plotseling voorbij. Ontzettend balen! De operatie aan mijn arm/hand in Clermont-Ferrand is gelukkig goed verlopen. Ik ben al begonnen met revalideren en hoop dat alles binnenkort weer 100% is. Het duurt nog enige tijd voordat ik weer buiten mag fietsen maar ik kon het niet laten even op de rollers te rijden. To individuals doing lockdown, despite what our friends may think that we spend our free hours with endless yoga, language lessons, meditating, creating cocktails and birthing sourdough - We know this is only 90% of the time. Humans are meant to have contact, meant to have interaction with our same breed, and no meaningful conversation should ever start with, ‘Pam! You’re on mute!’. Small interactions now with strangers are treated as a potential source of disease rather than enrichment. For our own mental wellbeing if nothing else, we will have to become genuinely content with stillness, with the company of our own thoughts (which can really attack us at times), with some kind of non-performative existence. Not easy. I’m still working through it but moving everyday, trying to make peace with my thoughts, music, and some taste of nature each day. Sure get angry, grieve but then make a plan for the next day. There’s no one within this lockdown that is unaffected, and it’ll affect us all at different times and ways. We’re all learning as we go. VLamax is one of the most important metrics for endurance athletes. It is trainable but also a bit finicky if you dont balance it properly. Whether you compete in Ironman races, sprinting events or high intensity bouts this is one metric that cant be ignored. Team CLIF has been a BIG fan of the Littleton Criterium for years - it’s simply a fantastic event. And to see the race join the mix on the USA CRITS calendar in 2018 made us mighty happy. The 2019 edition was a terrific night of racing. Large boisterous crowds, rockin’ live music, a fun & challenging course, and big screens displaying all the action. In this day in 2016 I tried social distancing before it got trendy. 185km solo breakaway. When I think of the race I can still feel the cramps in my arms from riding 5 hours as aero as possible. In the end of the stage I preferred the uphill parts, because then only my legs hurt. The race was Tour de Gironde of Bordeaux wine region in south-west of France, and we won every stage and classification except for best local rider. The prizes were predominantly wine, and we split somewhere around 70 litres in between staff and riders. My suitcase was stuffed. Yo la vida siempre me la he tomado como un juego. Desde que tengo uso de razón intento disfrutar de todo lo que puedo y divertirme siempre que se puede, ahora bien procuro no perder ninguna vida por el camino. Asi que siempre he pensado que este viaje es un tablero de juego inmenso, pero que se puede asemejar en “Escaleras y Serpientes”; de vez en cuando te encuentras una escalera que te sube y otras una serpiente que te baja. Pues ayer @jesushl90 encontró una serpiente de lo más devastadora, un ofidio que le llevó muy para abajo y que no fue para nada justo, pero como siempre se ha dicho, la vida pocas veces es justa. Pero lo realmente importante no es lo que te haya tocado, si no como te comportas ante ello. Y he de decir que Jesús ayer, demostró que es un señor de los pies a la cabeza. Después de haber perdido una oportunidad de oro (nunca mejor dicho) no lo exteriorizó en ningún momento. Podría haber gritado todo lo que se le ocurriese delante de todos a los cuatro vientos, haber mandado a paseo a su asistente, o haberme dicho algo a mi. Pero fuera de todo eso, sabía que nadie de los que estábamos allí teníamos la culpa de lo que había pasado, y creedme cuando os digo que darse cuenta de eso no es tan fácil en esas circunstancias. Se resignó, se cabreó consigo mismo, de batió en duelo contra todo lo que tenía dentro (que era mucho) e hizo un gesto inefable que nadie destacó; pasó a un segundo plano. Se dió cuenta que las fatalidades exsisten, que ayer no había escalera y que tenía que lidiar con la serpiente. Es en cosas como esta donde se ve quien es un campeón y un líder y quien no. A todos se nos quedó un sabor agridulce en el resultado de ayer; pero no queda otra que volver a jugar.
