Prepare yourself for a bit of an overshare this morning - and if that’s not your thing please scroll on down and have another sip of coffee. I’ve been a sick person for three years now and I “should” have more important things to worry about than how I look. Yet, like most people who are put on a lifetime of steroids, my face and body look very different, and it distresses me. And, like most women in this world, I’ve spent my life leading up to this point being told from every possible source that thinner equals better. I want to acknowledge that I still have enormous body privilege because my illness isn’t obvious to the world and I can shop at most clothing stores - which means I’m largely free of fat phobia and discrimination. In fact, I’m embarrassed by how much it’s upset me. I’m embarrassed by how much it still upsets me. But these past few months of lockdown, something has genuinely helped, and that is focusing on stronger instead of thiner. When you’ve been as weak and vulnerable as I have, the idea of chasing strong, felt a bit like a hoax. My whole body works against me building muscle, except unlike my thin ideal, this pursuit is (a) possible and (b) much better for my mental health and happiness. @thehiitmum and @thehiitfactory_hq have been my absolute champions and saviours during lockdown bringing cardio, weights, yoga, costumes, high fives, giggles and ace music into my home daily. The variety of body types on screen and the relentless cheerleading of the coaches made me feel included instead of terrified (gyms are scary). This isn’t sponsored, I’m just a really, really big fan. And to those feeling the usual “might just skip breakfast” dread because you stepped on scales this morning - I see you, I get it and it’s okay. It’s a radical act to have a body that doesn’t subscribe to society’s ideals and it’s a radical act to try and like yourself the way you are. Long post... buckle up. I was texting with a friend today and told her I was feeling anxious about being back at events and gatherings. She quickly shot back a text that said, Dont be anxious. You were made for this. Im probably the least emotional person youll ever meet, but that simple and profound statement made me a little misty eyed. I was made for this. Friends... we were made for this. Can I say how proud I am of the vendors/creatives who show up for their clients even during times like COVID? The ones who show up when things are joyful and pretty and the ones who show up when things are a little scary and tense. Who leave the safety and security of their homes and families to create and serve and capture memorable occasions for their clients. Who dont whine or complain about wearing masks in 100 degree weather and douse themselves with sanitizer while being right in the middle of groups of people. Sure, we do this because it pays our bills, but the ones who love and support their clients do it because they honor their commitments. They do it because they want to serve their clients well. They do it because they love what they do. I do try to steal my chances of wearing saree every now and then. I was born to a woman obsessed with sarees and married in the house were MIL could pass of as a fabulous saree curator so basically I am #sareeblessed In MP the most popular versions of handloom sarees any woman would love to keep started from #Tassarsilk also called Kosa followed by local love for #Chanderi #Maheshwari and cotton handloom baagh print sarees which you will find in every wardrobe of Saree loving woman. And every married woman by default will have minimum one pair of beautiful #Benarasi When I was getting married, I decide not to spend a penny on any kind of cloths but on a hand woven “Lehanga” which I managed, it was made over a month with many karigars working on it and I can safely say that Lehanga made my day more than anything ;) And to my luck my MIL and Mia Sahab had bought sarees over years on their various trips pan India so more than any piece of jewelry, I till date cherish these saris given to me, created on manual loom, handmade and worked by tireless artisans. From Temple saree to baluchari, Munga, garhwal, Ikaat and many more, From then anywhere I travelled, most of my sarees I can vouch have been direct buy from weavers because you get two benefits. First they welcome you with warmth in their loom areas, which are mostly outroom of their houses and then you get to hear their stories, struggles, family connections, history over cup of chai and then they show the best work which you can choose from. So I buy less, at times one saree in a year but each of this saree has a story of the weaver which is imprinted in my mind. In honor of small business Saturday I thought I would share a little bit about those of us behind the scenes and the heart of our business over the next few days. I’m an introvert and so socially awkward, but here goes: Hi, I’m Jessica the founder of and lead designer at Tiger Lily Invitations. A few fun facts about me: I’m a wife, daughter, aunt, crazy cat lady, greeting card hoarding, dessert eating, sun-loving, white claw drinking kind of lady. I’m a night owl and have been all my life. It led to my love of late night dance parties and forcing my friends to go to Saturday night disco (from 2am-4am) at the Georgia Theater in college. Clients may also notice an email or 2 from me at 2am because I love late night design sessions. I’ve always been creative and loved design. My school projects were always a little “extra” filled with photos, drawings and lots of color and I always dreamed of working in a creative job. It’s almost October and this is the third saree I wore in the entire year so far. While last year, there were times when I’d wear three in a day! I think I’d soon start draping them for dinner and lunches at home 🙄 Btw this drape is one of the oldest picks from our first ever posting at Amritsar. Amritsar is a shoppers paradise with net work, Pakistani suits, phulkaris and juttis and so much more to offer. Though I wasn’t inclined towards all of this then. Trust a newly wed to hate sarees. It was only after moving out that I realised how stupid was I to not pick up net stuff for myself. This particular one was made out of fabric and is the easiest drape out of the 125 sarees I own😐 ( don’t give me that wide eyed look, half of them are mom’s) What about you? I write a birthday card to my future self every year. What can I say, I’m not just basic but also cheesy! I usually fill it with hopes and dreams for how the next year will turn out, but this year the writer’s block was REAL. It’s hard to imagine a future when the future is so unpredictable. I mean it technically always is, but it’s hard to make plans when we’re in the middle of a pandemic. What will the state of the world be like in a year? Will we still be wearing masks? Still have to social distance? Allowed to travel? When will this all end? So my birthday card for next year isn’t full of crazy big dreams like celebrating 29 in Hawaii or crossing off Croatia Yacht Week on my bucket list or even making the big move to LA. Instead I wrote down the things I can still do and accomplish that a pandemic or an unpredictable future can’t get in the way of. What I can do is look towards gratitude and focus on all the wonderful opportunities that will always be available in my life. These are goals I can work towards every single day no matter my age: ✨Deepening my relationship with God ✨Building meaningful and lifelong friendships ✨Spending more time with my family (mainly my mom and dad no offence siblings) ✨Working hard and efficiently towards my dream career ✨Treating my body right by eating healthy and exercising consistently ✨Spending more time reading books and consuming content that focuses on self development, helping me grow and become the best version of myself 📷: @joannacanfly - @naomileanage on Instagram

This is a story about heartbreak. As we waited for our burgers, he asked me what my plan was post-college. I took a deep breath and shared my dream - to be a life coach & speaker. “No one will take you seriously let alone pay you until you’re 60 with a life of lessons to share,” he scoffed as he rolled his eyes. That was 10 years ago. Last month was the first time I confidently introduced myself to someone as a life coach without caring what they thought, even though I’d been coaching for YEARS. Despite the results and impact I had with clients, I danced around my “title” and always felt the need to justify, qualify, or fluff up the language. It took me 10 years to own my gifts and step into my purpose for one reason only: I was afraid of what people would think. I spent most of my life caring about what other people thought of me, and that’s how I learned how to stay small. In staying small, I learned how to break my own heart. That’s the thing - we get really good at breaking our own hearts, and then we look outside of ourselves to put the pieces back together. Every time I let someone else’s opinion influence my choices, I broke my heart. Every time I quieted my voice, I broke my heart. Every time I chose to make someone else happy at my own expense, I broke my heart. Every time I undervalued myself, I broke my heart. Every time I hid my joy, my desire, I broke my heart. Every time I doubted myself to do what I wanted, I broke my heart. Every time I made someone else the expert in my own life, or failed to ask for help, I broke my heart. Every time I let fear of judgement stop me from showing up in my power and purpose, I broke my heart. What we desire most as humans is connection. We’re wired for it. Our tendency to hide and stay in our smallness stems from our fear of losing connection. In that process, however, we lose the most important connection of all: our connection to ourselves. And THAT’S what we endlessly hope to find in the next designer bag, fancy job title, or box of cookies. It’s the search for ourselves. I’ve got a pretty crazy story for you today about exercise, athletes, and food cravings gone wild! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s a real-life illustration of one of the “cravings creators” that’s outlined in my latest ebook, Crush Your Cravings. (if you want it, comment CRAVINGS) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you heard of basketball player Dwight Howard, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let’s roll the clock back to 2014 when he was having trouble coming back after a back injury. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On the outside, he looked lean, strong, and basically invincible. … but he was eating a LOT of candy – the equivalent of about 24 candy bars a day, or about 500 grams of sugar!!! And keeping it a secret!! That’s about 2,000 calories a day just in sugar – not to mention all the unhealthy fats and other not-good-for-you ingredients in all that candy. Some estimates put the daily calorie total at more than 5,000. And He had tingling in his arms and legs, and he was having trouble catching passes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The suspected reason: A nerve problem called dysesthesia, which can happen with people who have diabetes! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After the intervention, Howard worked with the team’s nutritionist to replace all that sugar with healthier choices that would fuel his workouts and help keep him satisfied. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It wasn’t long until the tingling started to go away and his health markers improved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Takeaway: pay attention to how you feel AFTER your workouts and observe how different kinds of workouts (strength training, cardio, high-intensity, etc.) impact your cravings and how they make you feel later in the day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Knowing your body is the KEY to success. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Plan ahead and fuel yourself with a light, healthy meal or snack before and afterward, to help keep those cravings at bay! - @mommaemdoc on Instagram

One of my best friends is starting her own clothing line! (!!!!!)This morning she texted me in a moment of fear. She said, “Susy, I am investing a LOT of money into this. I’m scared.” ✨ It got me thinking about my own business. I have invested a LOT of money too. Every time it felt scary and even impossible, yet every investment paid off in ways greater than I had even hoped for. ✨ My first set of crystal bowls: $3k when I had just quit my corporate job and had no income. Today: I have 26 bowls and have gotten to play them all over the world in magical places like the Hollywood Bowl, sacred temples in India, and private islands in Italy. ✨ My first high ticket retreat: $2800 for a 3 day workshop with Caroline Myss. That weekend changed my life and the course of my business. I made the money back in 2 weeks. ✨ My first business coach: $20k... 🤯 I almost couldn’t wrap my head around the number, but I knew in my soul I had to do it. I made double my money back in a month. A MONTH! ✨ Every time I invested, it felt like I was spending money I couldn’t afford. My soul told me yes, but my mind said HECK NO! Many times I wasn’t sure where the money would come from, or how I would make it back. BUT - every time I made a soul investment, I ultimately made that money back 10 fold. In less than 3 years, I built a multi 6 figure business doing what I absolutely love 😌 It’s a life beyond my wildest dreams. ✨ Investing in yourself and what you believe in is like magic. It sends a message to the Universe that you are deeply committed to stepping into the next level. The Universe then reflects that magic and faith right back to you. ✨ So when she texted me this morning, I was over the moon excited. She is in the miracle zone. I have no doubt that her line will be a great success. When @misinewyork reopens her doors next week we will be lead by our General Manager @justnedje. As a server @lilianewyork she was my go to when I was trying to get up to speed (I wish I could have recorded her facial expressions when hearing all of my dumb questions I was too afraid to ask chefmissy) When Nedje communicated that she’d like to be a manager we made it happen even though there wasn’t a spot because we didn’t want to lose her . She then left @newyorkcity for the west coast for 2.5 years (she told me she was only going for 6 months) but she never left the @grovehouse_nyc fam. Our teams missed her , my family missed her , I missed her but I always kept tabs when visiting LA, through text, or by everyone else in our company that remained in constant contact with her . When she came back home this summer, our company was completely shut down, virtually nonexistent yet team members were texting me “did you meet with Nedje yet , did WE get her back , what’s Nedje going to do in GH?” (these were all people who didn’t have jobs themselves!) I knew what I wanted her to do , but I didn’t say it , I wanted her to. She helped us reopen @lilianewyork outdoor dining , she helped us build @mpnewyork because that’s who she is , she helps everyone selflessly. But I’ll never forget the way she said “l want to be GM of Misi” because that’s exactly what we wanted for her. I dont know who needs to hear this, but your hair does not determine your professionalism. I struggled with this for YEARS! I went to the extreme of not wearing braids or my natural hair because I considered these hairstyles ghetto and unprofessional. I struggled the most with the angst of changing my hair and then going to work and no one recognizing me. Or when they did recognize me, I would spend the first half of my meetings explaining to the group how long my hair took and how I wasnt going to be able to wash it for a few weeks. Its draining, to say the least. But what I had to learn is that my hair was not a reflection of my work ethic. Our hair is our crown and for black women, in particular, our hair is our superpower. We can go from twist out to knotless braids to silk press to unit all in a matter of a week if we wanted to. Let me say it plain, rock your hair however you want, sis!! CHOOSE FAITH OVER FEAR I’m honestly not sure how far we are into stage 4 lockdown now? I’m just trying to keep going with the flow, and maintain a sparkly positive mindset. I’ve stopped reading the news and putting negativity into my mind, but still finding that sneaky “fear monster” attempting to slip into my thoughts with doubts and fears. It’s been a good reminder to simply take a moment to be still, breathe and choose faith over fear. Fear is a perception, it’s False Evidence Appearing Real. Some of the fear and doubt that I’ve been experiencing lately has been around setting up my new business. If I had’ve known exactly how challenging the start-up phase would be, I may not have done it, but I am sooo glad I forged faithfully forward with my hopes and dreams (without a clue of what lays ahead) When I stop and remember my “why”, I suddenly feel calm, confident and centred. My courage kicks in, and my passion and purpose-driven mission is reignited... to remind every woman and girl that she is WORTHY. To help her to know exactly who she is, what she stands for, and what she wants to say. I am in absolute awe of all the incredible women in business out there bringing their vision to fruition to the world. To every unique boss lady out there... I salute you! I’m always being asked about what equipment I use, the settings on my camera, and how I edit. I’ve practiced a whole lot to become skilled at taking photos of people. A fun thing happened ! I’m IG verified ! I have a private practice & am a clinical assistant professor @gwsmhs. 📚 I graduated from @uofpenn Phi Beta Kappa in women’s studies & the biological basis of behavior. I went to medical school @jeffersonhealth. Just as you ride out of one tunnel, happy to see the sun.....another long tunnel appears and you are once again riding along in the dark, looking ahead, hoping to once again see the light.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The great thing about tunnels is that even though its dark, damp, cold and you cant really see things clearly, you know that if you just keep moving forward, you will reach the other side. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Flywheel was never really about the bike. It was about the people, the 10 years of ongoing sisterhood, hugs, high fives, music loud enough to drown out the world, early mornings that started with purpose, evenings that wrung out the stress, cheering each other on and holding each other up. It was about empathy - knowing that of 51 people in the room, some were going to PR, others were just surviving, someone was crying in the back row, and another person was beaming at you riding stalker (aka bike 5), and there was always a newbie hiding out in the middle who had no f*cking clue what was going on - but that we were all in it together. I’m gutted that it’s gone, and I’ll miss that part of my life forever. But change happens, whether you want it to or not. The one thing that is forever is every moment, every emotion and every milestone we sweat out together in that dark room. For that, I am grateful. It was only last year that I hit the lowest point in my life. I had moved back to Bangalore from Mumbai, and although it was nice to be home, I was struggling to find a job. I also missed living by myself and courageously facing the challenges of staying alone. This is when my passion for photography rescued me. Instead of dwelling on bigger problems, I took each day as it came and started finding joy in smaller things. I was fortunate to find a like minded group via Instagram, and soon members of the group became my friends. They were always there when I needed them. Whenever I felt low, they made sure I wasn’t alone. They pushed me to attend photo walks and to accompany them for photo shoots. As months passed by, our meetings became regular weekend activities. We woke up early, went for walks, enjoyed tea and breakfast and cherished each other’s company. Oh, how can I forget the famous CTR Masala Dosa of Bangalore that we shared! I feel fortunate to have met such a great group of people, who are happy with simple things like playing a round of UNO or laughing at each other’s jokes. Today, as we spend our days and weekends at home, I really miss these goofballs. Though virtually connected, I would love to be able to meet my friends, who always know how to make me smile. ✨ My Favourite Memory: We decided to go for a photo walk last year on Friendship Day. We just hung out, laughed, took hundreds of photos of trees, stray dogs, people and of each other. Every moment that day was full of pure joy and unadulterated love. ✨ My Realisation: Good friends help you find important things when you have lost them, such as smiles, hope and courage. . 2015-2020 As I begin my wedding shopping I think about what suits my body type now. What bothers is when I raise that concern people are so quick to negate that. As if they’ve grown with my body. “Tiny little thing” or “ugh please” is usually what follows along. Then of course you look like a child lol. Do I respond with you look so old!?! That’s a different rant for a different day. When I was tiny i ate too less and now that I’ve gained weight I am not allowed to speak about it?? It’s frustrating that I have to justify how my body feels to me to be heard. I can be tiny and that’s okay. I can have curves and that’s okay. Where I am with me - I promise you I know best. Some people want to gain weight and work hard towards such goals. Respect that. More than anything accept that every body type is different. To you I maybe “tiny” but to myself I have worked hard to become healthy. I gained muscle. I got curves. FOR MYSELF. Not for you. So for once, do us a favor and shut up. Listen. Stop labeling us. This is called conditioning. Contrary to popular belief, I dont wake up every day bouncing from the walls. But what I absolutely do is influence my mood by undertaking habits that I know turn my negatives into positives. 💕Walk in the fresh air. 💕Listen to a song that makes me happy. 💕Exercise daily. 💕Close my eyes and count my blessings. 💕Give my kids an extra cuddle. 💕And look for ways that I can keep giving back. Con Chicago me convertí en la primera mujer sonorense en correr un maratón debajo de las 3 horas, así que se puede decir que pase a la historia con esa hazaña. NY lo corrí el año pasado; 2019, y hasta la fecha es mi mejor tiempo: 2:56:46. Me resulta difícil decir cuál es mi favorito. Todos tienen su historia y motivación. Mi vida ha experimentado muchos cambios desde que comencé a correr. Me siento más llena de energía desde muy temprano, de buen humor, he conocido a muchas personas, he ganado muy buenos amigos, tengo la dicha de haber conocido muchos lugares a nivel mundial y todo esto sin contar los múltiples beneficios para mi salud, calculo que he bajado aproximadamente 10 kilos desde que inicie mi vida como corredora. Correr se ha convertido en mi mejor desestrés. Actualmente con la pandemia, en todos los ámbitos a nivel mundial hemos experimentado grandes cambios, y a nivel personal no es la excepción. Como todos, para este 2020 tenía planes, planes que temporalmente no se llevarán a cabo. El principal objetivo que tenía planteado era correr el maratón de Boston, sin embargo esto no sucederá, por lo menos no este año. No voy a mentir diciendo que esto ha sido fácil, el no contar con una meta específica por la cual trabajar y sumado al confinamiento se convierte en un escenario un tanto crítico, sin embargo de eso se trata la vida, de evolucionar, de experimentar cambios, cambios que no siempre serán fáciles pero que tarde o temprano nos adaptaremos. Cumplir una meta, un sueño, nunca ha sido sencillo, se necesita trabajo continuo, disciplina y perseverancia. Desde mi punto de vista esto nos ha venido a enseñar la nueva normalidad; esforzarnos más, salir de la zona de confort y trabajar no solo la parte física en los entrenamientos, también entrenar la parte mental y emocional. Actitud, así lo resumiría. Cada uno de nosotros está librando sus propias batallas, afrontando su realidad día a día y por más trillado que pueda sonar, el mantenernos activos físicamente nos ayudará a salir librados de ésta. - @losgordostambiencorren on Instagram
