My #homeoffice has changed locations and looks throughout my years as a #Realtor and being generally #selfemployed. I have received, and still get many remarks from people who think my surf and real estate life seems like a perfect #worklifebalance. Though it may appear that way, believe me, my mind is always running. I’m constantly thinking about new ideas, (so many) overdue tasks, current tasks, #LakeSurfistas community work, searching and sending quality listings for clients, getting updated on real estate market trends, one on one calls, follow ups, webinars, coaching, surf checks, surf questions, how much did that sell for, OMGs, and “what’s for dinner?” Don’t get me wrong! It’s super hard yet satisfying work, and I’d rather have it this way than be overworked and making millions. Taking care of clients as well as the community feels like what I’m meant to do. So with this in mind, my home office basically looks like what’s going on in my brain. I was thinking a couple weeks ago that what I really want to do in the world (with my artwork, at least) is create things that bring people a little bit of joy in the garbage fire that life can feel like. So, I’m dwelling on this thought one night when I get this photo from a dude who said his young buck begged him to take flicks of him on my sculpture at the library here in Richmond, and that he was really intrigued by the piece. Today Im gonna talk about a practice that is very common in our mosques which, I think should be stopped. In our mosques, people believe that kids are just are a cause of disturbance. Elders push kids to the back row and dont let them stand in the first row. And when we do this, children start to play in the back rows which causes noise disturbs the people praying. This is the nature that Allah created in children - they overflow with energy and enthusiasm and lack self-control. Sometimes, the children are also scolded for making noise and this decreases the interest of kids in mosque. They feel reluctant in going to mosque. Consider that you are a child, you are sitting in the first row of a mosque wishing to pray near Imam. But just before the prayer, an elder comes and tells you to go to the back rows. Will you not be angry? Will you not be discouraged and will your interest in namaz not decrease? This loss of interest in praying and going to mosque doesnt end here and becomes a habit which ultimately results in people not praying. Thr Ottomans used to say If you dont have children playing at the back of masjid while you are praying, then you dont have a bright future ahead of you Instead of scolding kids, we should follow Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).Knowing the nature of children, the Prophet taught us how to handle children. He corrected children (and adults) with mercy and compassion. Today was map sticker day! The last year has taken us to some incredible places, brought us closer as a family, and given us a freedom we didn’t realize was possible for us. I’ve never been more grateful than today that I stepped away from the status quo. For most of my life I’ve: -Cared way too much what people would think. -Played it safe instead of taking the risk. -Worked my ass off to get the degrees and stable corporate job. -Dreamed of having the freedom to travel, but didn’t believe it would ever be possible for us. All of that left me in a place where I was always trying to please others, but I wasn’t following my heart, intuition, or living my purpose. I wasn’t happy. I will never live that way again. My kids don’t need a perfect mom, they just need a happy one. Today: -I choose my family everyday. -I only work for myself and those who want the same things out of life that I do. -I choose adventure and travel. -I couldn’t care less about what people think of our choices. -I have true job security and time freedom. -I’m happy and purpose-filled. -I am making a bigger impact than I ever dreamed possible. Life is way too short to not chase your dreams. Along the way, I’ve certainly been misunderstood. I’ve had to step out in faith before I could see the entire road ahead. People may judge you until you “make it,” but if you just keep fighting for what you want you WILL make it, and down the road those same people will start asking if you’re hiring. ❤️ Time is our most precious commodity. Today was a big day. Today was a hard day. Today I saw amazing resilience from my own kids, my kids’ friends, and the incredible staff at their school. Today I cried. Today they laughed. Today was a reminder that things have changed.. and some things probably forever. Today I questioned if I’m doing what’s best for my kids. Today I questioned if I even know what’s best for my kids. Today I learned that we’re all just trying our best and taking each “today” as they come. I love my community so very much. The kids love their community as well and we’re just trying the best we can in these uncertainly best times. My family on the #frontsteps, Sep 2020. ❤️ Six months ago today I posted a photo of my family on our front steps in #needhamma. At the suggestion of @findingforty, I offered to take photos of neighbors in exchange for a donation to @needhamcommunity. I had no idea it would be the beginning of something so big, so extraordinary, and so completely life changing. ✨ On a daily basis @findingforty and I continue to “meet” photographers all over the world who donated their time to help their communities during a time of crisis. Together, we have raised over $3.3 million dollars!! 🙌 This photo was taken during a brief escape to #capecod last week. After working nonstop for the last six months, it was a much needed change of scenery and time of rest. I felt the urge to take this photo one morning as we were lounging in our PJs. This was a really cool commission because it was my first time using outdoor paints, or painting on wood, or doing anything bigger than A4. Took a while to find my feet, but when in doubt, jungle plants are always a good bet! These are cacao trees and coffee beans, which will hopefully be right at home outside @titotepe1010s café. Thanks for the commission Hector! Fun fact about cacao trees: the flowers are so tiny they can only be pollinated by one very small type of midge, which means we literally rely on flies for all of the worlds chocolate. 🐝 The flowers & pods also grow straight off the trunk, instead of on branches like normal plants. The campfire survivors in and around Paradise are still suffering from the aftermath of the disaster. Children often carry the additional worry of not being able to afford the supplies they need during the school year. We understand that a child’s education is critical to their lifetime success. Our volunteers at Sewa International in partnership with @campfiretinyhomes hosted a successful School supplies give away drive through an event at Oroville, CA on August 29th. Each child was given a brand-new backpack full of supplies. Children from kindergarten all the way up to 12th grade were able to receive the supplies they need to help them succeed in school. Each family that drove into the event was also blessed with boxes of fresh Produce. We gave out 500 backpacks filled with school supplies, as well as produce boxes, diapers & wipes! We are thankful to so many people in our community including our friends at @hss_us who see and understand the need for children in our community to start off their school year with all the supplies they need. Over the years Gabe had always taken an interest in making coffee, so I had shown him all the individual parts of the process: how to weigh the beans, grind them, where the filters are, how much water, how the coffee maker works, how long it takes etc. He was always very serious and asked interesting questions. Today he made the coffee all on his own, and then spent a lot of time bragging about how he had done it much faster, more neatly, more efficiently, and far better than I typically do. All true! Despite mounting concerns from some teachers and parents about the safety of returning to schools in person, the #PaloAlto Board of Education voted unanimously late Tuesday evening to begin a staggered reopening of campuses on Oct. 12. Palo Alto Educators Association President Teri Baldwin told the board that the reopening plan feels rushed. Some parents also worried that choosing distance or in-person learning could mean their child will lose their teacher since the district will have to reassign staff to meet the needs of students in the different models. The district plans to form a committee of teachers from each elementary school to provide feedback on whats working and what isnt as campuses reopen. The district will first bring transitional kindergarten students through first-graders back to school in a hybrid model on Oct. 12, then second- and third-graders on Oct. 26 and fourth- and fifth-graders on Nov. 9. You may have noticed that the street in Downtown Campbells been opened again. Yes, this does mean that the street closure experiment is coming to an end, but not entirely. After doing this for a bit over a month, the City of Campbell in consultation with the community of small businesses in Downtown Campbell deemed the road closure to be too detrimental for some of the businesses, but were not giving up on creating more opportunities expand outdoor options. Instead of having the road either closed or open, were going with a hybrid approach with parklets. These are parking spaces transformed into outdoor seating areas. It will take about three weeks for all the barriers needed to get the parklets in place to be installed. In the meantime, the street will be open Mondays through Thursdays and be closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This means that until further notice, the road closure will still be in effect on Fridays and weekends. As soon as the parklets have been fully installed, Campbell Ave. will again be open to traffic seven days a week. The parklets will be kept in place for a minimum of three months, but would likely continue indefinately if everything goes well. We know this news comes as a disappointment to many of you out there and were sorry that we couldnt continue it, but the City of Campbell is taking everything it learned from the month long road closure experiment and applying it to this new effort to give it a much better chance of working out for everyone. Also, weve been very pleased with how much improved youve all been about following safety guidelines since we started the road closure. Most people in Downtown Campbell are now wearing masks and wearing them correctly. I just want to say I commend every mother and every father who is going through the same struggle of virtual learning right now. I’m not going to lie. I definitely had a moment of panic a couple days ago, tears flowing and all. Noemi has to attend school from 8-3pm everyday and is required to be in her uniform for every zoom meeting. She’s only 5, so of course this will need every bit of my attention. I wasn’t sure how I was going to be a working mom, a mom to a newborn, a mom/teacher, and a mom to a child who is attending her first big girl school with a learning based in French. 😫 Today was a fail. I signed into her first zoom meeting all to find out school starts tomorrow. But, on the bright side, Noemi is so excited and ready to learn. I just have to remember to take deep breaths, find balance and remember that EVERYONE is going through it. Because the majority of young people in our Community Apartments live alone, they have faced extra challenges during the pandemic. In an effort to support these young people, Building Impact connected us with Takeda to be a part of their Takeda Cares Week. Takeda volunteers took part in a virtual volunteer project, creating care packages for youth living in Community Apartments. These kits are bringing joy and helping our youth practice self-care, self-expressive activities, and independent living skills. I had the most adorable adoption session before leaving on my trip! I LOVE ADOPTION SESSIONS! Hearing this families adoption journey was incredibly emotional for me.
