Based in Denver, Chris is an architect and developer who is passionate about creating sustainable, thriving communities. 🌿   Chris is the founder of Urban Roots Development, a company focused on crafting sustainable, mixed-use, outside-the-box development projects. Before Urban Roots, Chris co-founded @zocalocommunitydevelopment , where he served as principal for 12 years, overseeing the design, development, and construction of signature mixed-use and residential projects throughout the city.   Chris to shared a few insights about his education and career:   1) What advice would you offer CAP students?     Life within the four walls of architecture school may seem to offer all that a student needs to learn the profession. However, practicing architecture is social, engaged, and at times political, and it’s hard to develop all the necessary skills inside the studio. Take every opportunity to get out into the community and meet people related to the profession. Join the AIA and the Urban Land Institute. Participate in design-build opportunities. Attend a rezoning hearing at City Council. Buy the first piece of junk house you can afford and tear it up. Develop an area of interest and become an expert (sustainability, modular construction, mass timber). Leverage the platform that your school provides to launch a career.    2) How did CAP help you get where you are today?    An architectural education must deliver the basic tools of the of the profession (history, design theory, computer skills)—but the real value is learning a non-linear way of thinking and the ability to stitch together great design with pragmatic realities. Like art, architecture can be abstract, visionary, and inspirational, and yet for architecture more so than art, gravity still applies (as does budget, building code, and programmatic requirements). An architect must travel between these worlds and weave them together into a successful design. Pragmatic realities are not obstacles; they are design opportunities. On Tuesday I received the painful news that my grandfather is no longer with us. My family & I are heartbroken. The way I am feeling cannot be put into words. Nothing I say will do you justice. My grandpa was the rock of our family, our hero, & our inspiration. He was the prime example of hard work pays off but most importantly he taught us humility. I am in awe of all that he was able to accomplish. He had my dad at 17, moved to the U.S. at 18 & is the definition of the “American Dream”. He achieved more than his childhood self ever knew existed. Everything my family has been able to accomplish is because of his hard work & sacrifices. Everything we have & will ever accomplish is rooted in him. He is the foundation of my family & I couldn’t be prouder to be an Estevez. Anyone that has had the privilege of knowing him can agree that his spirit was one of a kind. It brings me peace knowing he lived life to the fullest. He was the life of every party and found so much joy in the simple things. I promise to live the way he lived; to work hard for success, to help others, to take care of your loved ones, & to enjoy life because life is beautiful if you choose to see the beauty in it. He taught me that nothing compares to joy of watching the fruit of your labor. When I graduated from college he was so proud of me and told me that he made it in life because he gets to see his granddaughter graduate from a university. It was a foreign concept to him because he didn’t have formal education. My milestones were a dream come true for him. Although it is hard to accept this new reality without the rock of our family, I know he will be with us each & every day guiding and protecting us from above. “You guys, I bought lunch for everybody! Go ahead, go help yourselves!” Cliff or ‘Cliffy’ as everyone called him, had a winning scratch-off and to spread the good fortune around, he bought lunch for the entire Lincoln Center crew! Never one to turn down a free meal, I quickly stuffed my packed lunch in the fridge and grabbed a plate ready to dig in! Out of the corner of my eye I realized Cliff had seen me and I started to explain my gluttony, but before I could he walked over, “No no, eat up! Eat up! I figure when good fortune comes to me, I try to spread it around!” Cliff was one of the most gentle, kind, thoughtful and funny guys I’ve ever worked with! Whenever he was at the studio, I knew I was gonna get taken care of, and that we’d share a borderline inappropriate joke or two... or three. I’m heartbroken to learn of his passing. Earlier today, Congressman John Lewis’ casket was carried in a horse-drawn carriage through Selma, Alabama and across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, site of an historic conflict. On March 7, 1965, Lewis was among those injured when police attacked non-violent Civil Rights demonstrators as they tried to march to Montgomery, Alabama’s capital. Over the course of his life, Lewis crossed the bridge many times, including on the 50th anniversary of what became known as “Bloody Sunday.” During that crossing, he was joined by then President Barack Obama and other Civil Rights activists. • An ordained Baptist minister and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner, Lewis co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and worked as a community organizer before being elected in 1987 to represent Georgia’s 5th District. Known as “the conscience of the Congress,” he served 17 terms and remained in office until his death on July 17, 2020 at the age of 80. • This portrait of Lewis was taken by @wheatonalumni Becky Hale, who joined the @natgeo staff soon after she graduated in 1999. It featured in the @beardandweilgalleries in “Six Journeys, One Beginning,” a 2019 exhibition honoring @wheatonvisualart Professor Andrew K. Howard’s career. Hale had photographed Lewis for a December 2018 article that capped the @natgeo magazine’s year-long initiative to explore diversity in America. In his interview with Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg, Lewis said, “We have to be taught to be unafraid—and political leaders must play a major role. We have to believe that we’re one people, one family. And we cannot turn against each other. We have to turn to each other.” His words remain ever relevant and his legacy – as an activist and non-violent warrior for social justice – will be enduring. This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The spirit and resilience of winemakers and everyone involved in the winemaking process was so inspiring. There were some heartbreaking moments when people shared their stories of tremendous loss but even through that ... their smiles, their warmth, their hopefulness was unwavering. These women are nothing short of phenomenal and someone with 3 PACKED days of filming managed to make sure everything ran smoothly. Harry Belafonte performed in 1967 at the University of Baltimore as part of a civil rights tour with Dr. Martin Luther King. After the show, an envelope was left for the activist at the front desk of the fieldhouse. Inside were six bullets and a letter written by a state trooper. “After having met and heard Dr. King and you, I will never fire a weapon ever again.” The trooper wrote “ I am forever grateful for this experience.” Harry Belafonte and Dr. King had a deep frendship and both chose to use their voices for love, strength, and unity of justice and equality. Vivien Thomas, the man who changed the history of heart surgery, would be 90 years old today. ❤️ Thomas worked as an assistant to Dr. Alfred Blalock at Vanderbilt University and later Johns Hopkins University. Together, they developed the procedure used in the blue baby operation—the first attempt to treat Tetralogy of Fallot. Though not credited at the time, Thomas was a cardiac pioneer who developed techniques and tools that would lead to today’s modern heart surgery. Here is a portrait from a series I have been working on entitled “Flowers of Britain”. ~ Kathie Bone Health Care Assistant with Taraxacum @kathiebone New work exploring our relationship and emotional response to the NHS and the natural world: Life giving forces both too often overlooked. When Britain went into lockdown I was struck by our collective desire to be in nature (or at the very least to grow things). Instead we were forced to stay at home and face our own mortality, deprived for most of the day from witnessing nature’s rebirth in what was arguably the most beautiful spring Britain has seen in years. As images emerged of exhausted doctors and nurses, their faces lined by tiredness and PPE, planet Earth, by contrast, got a break from human interference. Councils stopped spraying the streets and the pavements sprang to life. Some plants gained new status; no longer weeds to be ignored and uprooted, but wild flowers to be appreciated in all their beauty and diversity. The same went for NHS workers of course. We clapped them weekly and, often against their wishes, called them heroes. In July 1942, when only a fifth of the population remained, Jerzy escaped. “It was a choice between certain death and uncertain survival.” He obtained false papers and joined the Polish resistance, only to be captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp before being release in 1945. Sadly, his father was killed by the Nazi’s a week before the Soviet Army arrived in Poland. From Ruth Messinger, the JCCs activist-in-residence: I mourn the passing of one of my true heroes, a man who will go down in history as one of the great leaders of our time, Congressman John Lewis. He was a person of true moral courage and should be held up as an exemplar of what it means to take risks, to put your body on the line, to practice non-violent civil disobedience, to always fight for what you believe. Because he was willing to challenge segregation, to endure beatings, to be arrested 40 times and to run for Congress, he served our democracy with distinction for more than 30 years, received the Presidential Medal of Honor, and never stopped fighting for equity and justice at home and abroad. The Congressman’s instruction to all of us was to “make trouble,” make “good trouble, “make necessary trouble.” I consider it one of the privileges of my life to have known him, had opportunities to work with him, and tell him that he was a role model for many in my generation. May he rest in power, and may we at the JCC and beyond honor his life with our struggles for voting rights, for civil society, and against racism. Today, we announced the sale of over 50 works from the collection of the late great art historian Sir John Richardson - celebrated biographer of Pablo Picasso. - Once described as “the man all New York wants to sit beside at dinner”, his was a life well lived. Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and David Hockney all painted his portrait, and, at the age of 92, he posed nude for Jenny Saville. In 1987 he delivered a eulogy at his friend Andy Warhol’s funeral. -  The collection mirrors the man behind it - bringing to light his colourful world and presenting a roll call of some of the greatest artists through history. Works are inscribed to him personally by Picasso, Braque, Warhol and Freud - all of which adorned his fabulously bohemian Fifth Avenue apartment, and will be offered across various sales in New York this autumn. - A lifelong friend of Freud, the artist’s exquisite portrait of Richardson painted in 1998 has now been gifted to The American Friends of the @nationalportraitgallery. In the summer of 1884, IWC ushered in the digital age. The first pocket watch with jump digits leaves the factory. They are based on the system of the Salzburg-based watchmaker Josef Pallweber and display hours and minutes with large rotating disks. Johannes Rauschenbach Schenk is fascinated by the modern form of the time display and secures the patents on the handless watch. The power reserve of the Palmweber pocket watch is relatively low. IWC can significantly improve the design. The pallweber pocket watch, of which around 20,000 were made in Schaffhausen, have been a bestseller for five years. Daddy, Alzheimers and Me • I was alone with my dad one day when he asked, “What is happening to me?” He could still communicate with words at this point but his mind often broke them down like a blender, so he could never be too sure how they would come out. But this time his question was clear and I didn’t know how to answer. My silence felt like betrayal at the time, but now Im glad I said nothing. My response would have been wrong. It would have been based on what I could see and all I saw was this one thing, this sickness, this disease creeping through the back door of our home like a thief. I never noticed God standing at the front door, knocking, waiting to come in and be present in the suffering. Even before I really noticed He was there, He had already started doing more than my eyes could see. Perhaps that’s how Jesus could be so bold in the face of death. When He looked it in the eyes, he must have seen more. He must have seen glory too. He must have seen salvation. He must have seen me and you. In that moment, He saw both loss and life, suffering and hope, judgement and mercy. He saw it all and continued to walk towards the cross, knowing that the light and momentary affliction does not compare to the eternal glory. So now, when I look at the cross I am reminded that God is always doing much more than I can see. Michael Payne’s father, J. Howard Payne, bought his parcel of land in Sag Harbor in 1954 for $600. He took out a loan from the lumberyard, the only way to finance materials to build a house if you were Black, for $5,000 and built an upside down house. In 2010, Michael tore down his father’s structure and built the gorgeous house in the first photo, that over looks the bay. E.T. Williams, (second photo) summers in a home that has only been owned by free Black men, dating back to David Hempstead in 1869. The home has a cottage feel and the walls are covered in art. Speaking to these families and learning the history of the area was my favorite part of reporting this story.
