Good memories about teaching the soon to be new Wim Hof Method instructors just before the Corona crisis. Although most people tend to go into fright-flight-fight mode when a crisis arise, a crisis can also be an invitation to grow. When I look back at my own life, my biggest growth was after more difficult periods in my life. Already 7 years ago I booked my first workshop with Wim in a quest to find my own identity and authenticity. This brought my life into a rollercoaster which finally results this year in selling my two cosmetic clinics to be full-time WHM instructor and holistic therapist. After my initial fright-flight-fight response in this Corona crisis because I had to close both my businesses (The Body Clinic and ICEMANTRAININGEN), the dust is already settling and I can already see beautiful things. We did three beautiful LIVE WHM breathingsession, which were supported by all of you guys! Thank you so much 🙏🙏This inspired me to give more online sessions, instead of only posts. In my personal life, I started cooking and sport more frequently, two points of personal growth in this crisis. My mum is so proud ;-) (about the coocking). Showing up can be the hardest part of self care. I felt this early this morning. I woke a feeling a lil anx + didn’t really want to do the whole tune in to self. But I did. Because I knew once I got myself out of bed I’d be better for it. I know I talk a lot about self-care. I never use to because it felt a bit cringe. I knew I had self-care practices but the display of self-care via social media was different to mine. Self-care was hash-tagged with glamour + that simply was not my situation. The time I carved out for some formal self-care practice was early (think before sunrise to work within a child’s routine). I would more than likely be dressed in trackies + whatever band tee I’d have from a past gig. But there I’d show up. I’d sit I’d move I’d breath I’d listen Even when I outsourced self-care like having a massage, attending a yoga class or getting acupuncture it still wasn’t pretty. It felt messy, there were tears, oh my gosh so many tears accompanied with anxiety, frustration, anger + then guilt, because I felt like I was getting it ‘wrong’. Call me stubborn. But I persisted. Because I knew deep down there was something to what I was doing. I knew in those moments of showing up they held a connectedness + I knew I wanted to know more, to feel more of that. Self-care can be so much. It can be nurturing, tender + taking time for you. But it can get messy, it can be hard. It most certainly requires a sense of discipline. But it is entirely worth it. This morning I had to be patient, I listened, I moved slow + considered. But I showed up. Self-care is a practice, we can weave through our lives. Start small. What’s the difference between “alignment” and “continuity” in yoga practice? 🤔 All too often, “alignment” can imply that there is one way to arrange one’s body in a pose, and that it is universal. “Continuity,” on the other hand, suggests a more internal experience. ✨ Continuity refers to a state of harmonious agreement throughout the moveable parts of the body. In other words, when we focus on continuity, we tune into the relationships between bones at each joint, between the inner movement intentions (the breath) and the outer manifestation of an asana, and between the internal and external structures of our bodies. ⚖️ Even if you don’t regularly use yoga props—blocks, straps, blankets, etc.—use them when you practice for continuity. They are invaluable tools for helping you achieve structural integrity in your poses. ✅ Mindfulness of the disposition of your brain can help you determine if your pose is in harmony with itself. Does your brain feel tight, hard, strained or contracted? If so, relax your brain if possible, then look around the body and note where else you might be straining. 🧠 All these cues are subtle. They require that we look more deeply than we may be used to. An overstretched or impinged joint will speak right up—its feedback is right on the surface. Reciting alignment rules in our heads as we practice squelches deeper exploration. Looking deeper is the essence of yoga practice. Desde chico tenia mucha curiosidad por las cosas espirituales y místicas , dehecho empecé este camino de autoconocimiento cuando descubrí el arte y la sensibilidad que había en mí y por ahí seguí para luego conectarme con las plantas maestras y todo un mundo de energía sutil donde los rituales y la magia siempre fueron los pilares de mi viaje. Alrededor del 2016 gané una beca para estudiar una formación en Tailandia para ser practicante y coach de meditación. Un curso diseñado para artistas que buscan fusionar creatividad y espiritualidad y compartirla con el mundo. Desde ese momento realmente mi vida dió un giro muy positivo . YÁ el proceso se había iniciado hace años con el yoga ,con las plantas y con las artes , pero sin dudas después de esta inmersión descubrí que tenemos dentro todo un universo inmenso, armónico y amoroso de nuestro lado. Solo He podido experimentar en la meditación este estado y gracias a el tmb entendí lo que es el servicio … y no he dejado de compartir esta herramienta tan potente desde esa fecha… hoy sigo desarrollando esta práctica que seguro podría ser beneficiosa para tí al igual que lo viene siendo para mÍ y para muchas personas alrededor del mundo. Let’s talk Trikonasana - triangle pose. A common instruction heard in yoga class is, “fit yourself between two panes of glass” Would you agree? 👎🏽👍🏽 To be blunt, were not fans. Performing trikonasana between the glass can be damaging to the hip joint. In fact we know of far too many yoga practitioners in their 40s and 50s whove had hip replacement surgeries. Although genetics have a part too, these yogis all blame repeated trikonasanas (with both thighs externally rotated and pushed forward) for their hip damage. Here’s why: 🦵The hips are a ball and socket joint which means that in order for the head of the femur to rotate in the socket the femur heads need to be integrated. Tucking the tailbone way under, externally rotating both thigns, and pushing the femurs forward does the opposite of integrate. How can you create integration? Give these quick alignment tips a try and tell us how it feels: 1️⃣ From Downdog - step your right foot between your hands, spin your left heel down parallel to the back of your mat, and align your feet heel to arch. Settle all four corners evenly. 2️⃣ Tone your legs by energetically drawing your feet towards each other 3️⃣ Place both hands to the inside of your right foot and walk them off the front left corner of your mat 6-8 inches resisting in the opposite direction with your pelvis 4️⃣ Keep your pelvis back and your left thigh rotated in, place your left hand on your left hip as you draw your right sitting bone under to externally rotate your front right leg 5️⃣ Without losing that, slowly begin to straighten your right leg and move your right fingertips to the outside of your right shin 6️⃣ Stretch you left finger tips towards the sky and from your pelvis into your feet, press down into the earth and extend from your belly through your spine, arms, and head *️⃣ The most common misalignment is not taking your feet far enough apart! An embodied Sadhana (practice) 🧘♀️ Being a yoga teacher, I’m portrayed as well put together in my classes (even after sharing anecdotes to the contrary!) As an eternal student I don’t fan the misperception of the perfect yogi (does that even exist?!) Here’s a candid pic of my own practice last week; colour uncoordinated pj’s and bed hair for added effect 😁 Contrary to popular belief, perfection in yoga is a white-supremacy construct; the perfectly curated highlight reel of asanas(postures) is only one of the eight limbs of philosophy that’s highlighted. Yoga is an act of devotion and self-care. In these tender times it is more important to show up and maintain a ritual toward self-preservation than add pressure to perform. Starting the day by connecting to the Divine is non-negotiable; a kriya (cleansing practice) with some gentle movement & meditation for 15 mins minimum. The asana practice I usually get to later in the day. For anyone who thinks there’s no time in the day here are a few things to try even in bed! As you wake up (instead of grabbing your phone); 🌸take 3-5 deep breaths, tuning into the felt experience of the inhale and exhale. 🌸have one (or both hands) on your heart or anywhere on your body, tuning into how your body feels in that moment 🌸saying an affirmation to start your day (Eg: My body is safe no matter what I may be feeling; I am safe; This too shall pass; I am supported by a kind, loving and generous universe.) 🌸gratitude - think of something you’re grateful for(for me it’s breathing uninhibited; a roof above filled with love) this can be as many as you like) 🌸drinking a cup of tea or coffee mindfully. The intention I bring to my practice is what matters. To wake up with a grateful heart to know I am alive and well. To acknowledge these everyday miracles first, to commit with devotion to a force greater than me, rather than be consumed by the inconsequential. This happens in varying degrees, and evolves organically. Showing up daily to whatever the practice unfolds without expectation is key; a powerful act of surrendering to grace. These photos are all credited to incredible @olivianachle she is the photographer of my book pictures. In 2018 I did my teacher training with @blissology and @olivianachle was the retreat photographer. Many of us did a separate shot with her. I remember for my shot we drove on a scooter through the rice fields to this beach to take these shots. No plans just flow with the waves surrounding us. I remember a Balinese man walking and sitting down on the beach. He took his hat off watching as Olivia and I took photos. At one point my swimsuit got whipped away in the waves Olivia was running after it, we were both laughing and the Balinese man too. It was a beautiful reminder of all in acceptance and love and being human in a moment. When I wrote my book @olivianachle photos were a gift to have, as they captured me... a girl barefoot, footloose and fancy free. It was a small representation of my journey back to self love at a very difficult time in my life due to personal circumstances and traumas... For one reason it was the first time I went back to Bali after being raped there in 2009. Here is an extract from my book I want to share. I came home yesterday to this amazing sun and rainbow overlooking my yard. I had to take some shots. Just my luck my pose was today’s. ( in variation) I am to share what makes me valuable.... 👉🏼I learned slowly how to appreciate myself. It took almost half my life to love myself unconditionally..It is the hardest part of this practice. I always felt broken down in categories like being smart, pretty, skinny , flexible etc when I look as a whole unit, I’m quite impressed how I do so much with what I’ve been given. Good or bad . Half my life I spent ill. Hospitals and surgeries too numerous to count. Yet I still push through and take my hardships and lessons as a blessing and offering to others I’m different and unique. I’m creative and resourceful-learning how to utilize all my possessions for good. I strive for being different which is such a flip in shifts because I once tried so hard to be everyone and everything else. Once I stopped questioning why me, I found the real reason why I’m chosen for all I endure- because I am the teacher of this subject and will educate others on how to live with your most authentic self. Sometimes Sage just shows up to class, and does his yoga. We never know when or why, and it’s sudden and dynamic; that’s been his story since he arrived. You can’t tell him what to do, not a single soft word, only help him, while he does his free flow (was he a vinyasa flow dude last time around? 😂) He turns 5 tomorrow, on the Aries Full Moon. It seems like he has always been here with us, yet it seems like it all went so fast since he arrived. He woke us up to life, and we previously thought we were living. He scared the living hell out of us. He has literally been our “Sage,” showing Tarik and me likewise, that we don’t know shi*! He came into this world upside down, sideways and “screaming like a banshee.” Since then, we learned how to go forward, no matter what was coming at us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You are not your thoughts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Quickly, what are you going to think next? Obviously, this was a trick question since it’s highly unlikely you’ll know what thoughts will emerge until they actually do. You see, thoughts emerge from your consciousness and slip away as easily as they appear. To associate yourself with every single thought you may have is not only harmful but misleading since some thoughts do not serve you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You have to understand that you are only a witnesser of your own thoughts. Thoughts occur through you, similar to a radio transmitting a frequency signal. You are not the signal, but the receiver of the signal. Therefore thoughts alone are not the cause of your suffering and unhappiness. It is when you identify and attach yourself to them that may cause you to become overwhelmed and stumble. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Remember that you cannot stop thoughts from occurring any more than preventing vital body functions. Your aim should be to reduce the volume of your thoughts by becoming the perceiver, which will allow you to detach and identify with them less. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Practicing mindfulness is a very useful tool when you may be experiencing runaway thoughts. Let them enter your awareness, accept them as a thought, and then let them go instead of becoming invested in them. Because the moment you place your attention on attaching yourself to your fleeting thoughts, you relinquish control. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Through practice, you can increasingly become a better observer of your thoughts.
