Britannia, a whaling ship that brought convicts and supplies to Sydney as part of the Third Fleet, was the first ship to harpoon a sperm whale off the Australian coast, in October 1791. The whaling industry helped the fledgling colony survive and the industry flourished until a downturn in the 1850s and the eventual overharvesting of many species. The last whaling station in Australia closed in 1978. Australia is today a leading member of the International Whaling Commission and deeply engaged in the fight against whaling. Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting. Despite sailing for over half a century, Einstein was not a very accomplished sailor, wrote Philip R. Devlin. According to his biographers, he would lose his direction, his mast would often fall down, and he frequently ran aground and had near-collisions with other vessels. June 25-26, 1876. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and over 268 men of the 7th US Cavalry Regiment were slaughtered in the Battle of Little Bighorn by Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes near Little Bighorn River, Montana. The Natives hoped by winning the battle Americans would leave native land for good. Instead the death of Custer as well as the 7th made the American public outraged, and the vengeful US military brought the Sioux tribe to their knees by 1877. All Sioux land had been annexed by the US in the Agreement of 1877, and placed Native Americans in reservations ending the Great Sioux War of 1876. Marie-Antoinette y fit aménager des espaces plus intimes, avec le Hameau. On la voit dans ce dessin aspirer à une vie familiale privée et apaisée, dans un havre de paix et de verdure. Le Hameau est un lieu de promenade et de réception très apprécié de Marie-Antoinette qui aime se retirer à lécart de la cour. Il s’inscrit dans le goût du retour à la nature, grande tendance de la fin du XVIIIème siècle. D’apparence rustiques, les intérieurs sont toutefois richement décorés, comme dans la maison de la reine qu’on aperçoit à l’arrière-plan du dessin. #יצירה_ביפו_העתיקה 🖼️ לכבוד השנה החדשה ובצל הסגר שבדרך, ממשיכים בסדרה האופטימית שמביאה יצירה מקומית עד למסך הקטן שלכם - כל פעם עם אמן או מעצב אחר שחי, פועל או יוצר בהשראת יפו העתיקה! ~ והפעם - סטודיו חדש ביפו העתיקה: הצייר סרחיו דניאל צרטקוף ~ סרחיו נולד בארגנטינה ב-1962 ועלה לארץ בגיל 7. הוא החל לצייר בגיל 25 אחרי שהשתחרר מהצבא. לאורך הקריירה שלו, התגורר ויצר בערים שונות בישראל ובלוס אנג׳לס, שם חבר לקבוצת אמנים בשם ״נוהו״ ששמה לה למטרה לשלב אמנות בחיי הקהילה ההיספנית שבאזור. תוך כדי עבודה עם נוער במצוקה, כשהוא מוקף בתרבות ההיספנית, ביסס את סגנונו הלטיני הממוזג בהשפעות תרבותיות של הים התיכון. אלמנט זה בא לידי ביטוי בצבעוניות העזה שמאפיינת את עבודותיו ~ דניאל צייר והציג במוזיאונים וגלריות בכל רחבי העולם, בקריירה מפוארת שמתפרשת על 33 שנה, כשהוא לא עוצר לרגע. כשחזר לארץ בשנות ה-90, התמקם בשכונת פלורנטין. כיום, תוכלו למצוא אותו בסטודיו שלו ביפו העתיקה, שם הוא יוצר ומלמד במסירות ומיומנות המאפיינת אותו מאז ומתמיד ~ בתמונות כמה מהעבודות הוירטואוזיות של האמן ~ מוזמנים לדפדף ולצלול או לבקר בסטודיו בסמטת מזל דגים 18 🛕 - @old_jaffa on Instagram

Again, the Gemini are in the Orchard, Leonora Carrington, c. 1947. Leonora Carrington (1917- 2011) was a painter sculptor, novelist, and war refugee, best known for being a leading figure of the Surrealist movement. Born to a wealthy family of Lancashire, England, Carrington refused her elitist upbringing to pursue an artistic career. At the age of 20, she met her future lover, the artist Max Ernst, who introduced her to the members of the Surrealist movement in Paris. With the outbreak of World War Two, France became occupied by the Nazis, and Ernst was soon after arrested. During the occupation, Carrington fled to Spain where she suffered a mental breakdown, and as a result, she was confined to a mental asylum. Eventually, Carrington escaped from the institution and embarked into an odyssey which settled her in Mexico City in 1942. In Mexico, Carrington met with other European artists who also had escaped from the war. Here her artistic career flourished and eventually became known as an emblematic pillar of the Surrealist movement. Leonora Carrington died in Mexico at the age of 94 (2011), and many say she was the last Surrealist standing. The only Carrington exhibited in the Netherlands, Again, the Gemini are in the Orchard (1947), was acquired by the @boijmans in 2019 to provide a more representative scope of the Surrealist artists.
