La série Wird de l’artiste @brunohadjih est actuellement exposée dans l’exposition Croyances, Faire et défaire l’invisible, à @institutculturesislam . Cette exposition rassemble seize artistes photographes, vidéastes et performeurs, qui se saisissent de façon poétique, critique ou décalée de la question du “Croire”. Those were my earliest words to you. A gentle pat on my back, a cozy caress over my head, perhaps thats all a child yearns for. I havent had the opportunity to know Edison in person, but you have been no less to me - a glowing bulb that dissipated the darkness that engulfed me, at some point in the past. Do you know how many little petals blossomed in that Tulip orchard of yours? Each having a different hue, a different aroma and a unique palpation. If not for you, they would have been crushed by now. You were the Pied Piper who lured children for good. More than any colour, I have had to face red, everywhere in circles, in boxes, in bruises and so on. I barely had those stars or smileys on my sheets. I have spent more time holding my ears in those corridors than scribbling on the first benches. While the children my age moved to a combination of alphabets and digits, yes, algebra, I barely could differentiate between the digit 6 and the letter b. And then walked in, a temporary art teacher who permanently morphed my life. The man who could address the wounds behind my scars, the cause behind my symptoms. You drew a sphere in blue and green, and I got to know that there was land and water, that there was a silver moon and a golden sun. You taught me how the words felt, as you moved your fingers across my callow skin. You laid stairs for me to learn to add values and subtract insecurities from my life. You had a plural existence for me, but a singular essence. The world called me a duffer, dumbo and what not, but you were someone who finally called me a Champ. Maybe my pallate truly deserved the colours you added to my life. As much as the world needs the next Edison, Einstein, Tendulkar, Mangeshkar and so on, it also needs a Ram Shankar Nikumbh. I shot this Mika promo for track ‘San Remo’ on 16mm @Kodak on an SRlll with a wonderful crew in Croatia last year. Director @wizfilmmaker wanted to shoot this Fellini-esque style - the promo is set in the 1950s when homosexuality was illegal, a time of discrimination and persecution. Mika’s character roams the streets in search of a lover while avoiding the police. We mostly used available light on this promo, at night we used the car headlights and a torch and during the day we worked with the shadows of doorways and the bright Croatian sun. The bar location had a small window so I put a light through the window to bounce on the floor - the way the sun often does in a dark and dingy bar. I’m a puddle today. I started writing this album almost four years ago. It started on a major, got dropped from a major then took a nearly 2.5 year breather while I wrote my book, which comes out digitally all over the world tomorrow and is written about many of the same stories in the album. A few last minute songs were added and recorded in my dads office in Winnipeg during the early days of quarantine. I certainly don’t need to tell you all what a strange fucking time it is but putting out a project that is this deeply personal amidst this bleak landscape feels so deeply connecting. I feel so connected to you even as I lay on this couch in Winnipeg beside that fireplace holding this teddy bear @wafiaaa and @grandson just sent me. I am so grateful to the people who helped me make this album. @_alexandervincent who started this album with me when I was still figuring out what it even was❤️ who’s friendship and support and subtle, powerful production encouraged me to find myself after splitting from Wdarlz @starsmith who produced and co-wrote #getaway with me. Skills, resource and information sharing/exchanges/referrals/inclusion, mentorship, accountability, hikes and runs that are therapy sessions, celebrating successes, the big and the small, goofing off, singing together, cleaning together, reading and breaking down and internalizing books together, mourning together...sharing secrets, dreams, downloads and the entire spectrum of experiencing the paradox of intense wildness and conditioned domesticality all at once. Womxn - create your council. Your pack is everything. The lone wolf is a lie (a lone wolf is either looking for a mate, looking for a new pack or going off to die #truestory). Where and when I grew up, the vibe for girls was scarcity and hierarchy. I was often treated as a threat - and I still trigger men and womxn alike when I stand in my power. But its becoming easier and easier to continue kicking ass with grace and not shrinking myself to make others more comfortable — because I FEEL resourced - by my own self - and by my pack. When someone reacts at me with scarcity - i have grace for them because I know what that is and where it comes from and who created it, long, long ago. And so it can be alchemized. Alchemy is naturally occurring in womxn - our bodies can grow and sustain life yo (and, not everyone has to btw) - that is ULTIMATE. The era of oppressing and shaming womxn is drawing to a close. It’s been hard to post anything for a long while since loosing our good good friend Denise Johnson. The studio has not been quite the same without her. D filled the place with love and laughter and the rooms will always echo her beautiful, emotive and powerful voice. We will miss her greatly but will never forget all the times we shared with her and all the times she encouraged us to go on when things got really tough. Her indomitable strength and uplifting spirit will never leave us. What she left us with is a beautiful album recorded and mixed at Hope Mill, released October 2nd.
