Without comedy I honestly don’t know where I would be in life before comedy I was a kid with no qualifications no transferable skills and it gave me a purpose in life. I know with what’s going on in the world right now uk comedy going bust is noting but a grain of sand on the bench of issues but the world needs funny to make us realise how ridiculous life can be. PLEASE READ ME 🤪🙏🙏 *Shemma Fabric* It’s a Handwoven fabrics with decorative woven borders. Womens traditional clothes in Ethiopia are made from clothes called shemma and used to make habesha qemis. The cotton is fluffed, and the thread is hand spun by women, while men called shemane, using traditional wooden looms weave the material. The result is a soft and warm cotton garment that is heavenly to wear against the skin. it is basically a cloth, about 90 cm wide, woven in long strips which are then sewn together. Sometimes shiny threads are woven into the fabric for an elegant effect. It takes about two to three weeks to make enough cloth for one dress. The bottom of the garment or shirt may be ornamented with patterns. This is common among both Muslim and Christian women. Elderly women will wear a sash on a day-to-day basis, while other women only wear a sash also called a netela while attending church. After today it makes two years for me living in Austin. It’s been a up hill battle and journey truthfully. To think about the birthdays, holidays & moments you miss is tough. When you sacrifice the gain is far more than you can imagine. Often times on our journey we think it’s suppose to be easy but truth be told even then some would still be there own enemy. The burning desire for success and greatness is all I tolerate. We live in an era where anyone can be or say anything but the thing is time and work ethic. You can feel entitled all day but if your not putting in the work to grow and get better what good does it do. Write your goals down and find your why. I know who I’am at the end of the day. I’ve been planting and nurturing so many seeds that when the harvest comes it’ll be an abundance rain like on my life for all the things I’ve sacrificed. Handle for a Peacock-Feather Fly Whisk (morchal) India, Probably Lucknow or Delhi, Late 19th century Light green nephrite jade inlaid with silver foil-backed synthetic rubies set in gold and gilded copper This luxurious fly whisk handle is fashioned out of two pieces of light green nephrite jade. The top section is the mouth of the handle into which the now-missing whisk is secured. It is hollowed out and shaped like a flared lotus or tulip blossom. The juncture to the handgrip is just above the encircling collar, called a necklace, made of synthetic rubies set in gold. A metal tang connects the two parts. The terminal of the handle is in the form of a lotus bud. The overall shape of the handle replicates the constructed parts used for making metal, wooden, and ivory fly whisk handles. The decoration of the upper section of the handle consists of synthetic rubies set in gold chevrons, simplified floral motifs, and a scrolling vine around the bead molding above the juncture. In contrast, the chevrons on the lower section are made of gilded copper, which has been effaced from handling. The synthetic rubies, termed boules, are single crystal ingots made by the Verneuil process of flame fusion invented in 1877. The technique generally involves melting corundum powder over a kindling flame. The melted droplets crystallize into a cylinder or a pear-shaped imitation ruby or sapphire. The honorific fly whisk is an ancient pan-Asian accouterment of both earthly and divine sovereignty. When the handle is short and stout, like the present example, it is called a morchal and originally held peacock feathers used as a fan. Eid Mubarak to all of my Muslim friends and family - and to all people of any religious belief - I want to take this opportunity to share my thoughts on this holiday, and the perception of Islam in the western world. Now, I should start out by saying that I am not particularly religious. I do believe however, despite my reluctance to follow many hadiths, that being brought up Muslim has shaped me in many ways. Eid-al-Adha is the second major holiday of the year for Muslims, and honors the willingness of Ibrahim (aka Abraham) to sacrifice his own son as an act of obedience to Allah (aka God aka the g in omg). Charity shines brightly as the central tenet of Eid-al-Adha; traditionally, Muslims purchase the meat of a goat or cow, and distribute it evenly - a third for their household, a third for friends and relatives, and a third for those less fortunate. Nowadays, people might set up a fund and give accordingly. The other Eid festivities resemble those of Easter, Christmas, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Holi, and Diwali: with food, culture, family, and friends. It’s important to remember that Muslims are people who have values, traditions, and customs that resemble yours! We can struggle with the rules of religion and we can see them as a beautiful source of inspiration all at the same time. I have been very lucky to be surrounded by people of varying religious beliefs - a circumstance which certainly exposes my privilege. But as I continue to learn about and actively partake in the customs and beliefs of others, I feel it’s important to shed light on my own - often misunderstood - community. So today, I’m asking you to think of your Muslim friend, and tell them “Eid Mubarak!”, the same way I will always happily shout “Merry Christmas!” or “Shanah Tovah!” to you. :) edited: Yom Kippur removed from list of holidays that include fun festivities, as it is a holiday of fasting and introspection. Familial Faces. Henry Flaglers Library at Whitehall features portraits of his father, his first wife, Mary Harkness Flagler, and two of their three children. Only Henrys son, who went by Harry, would survive to have children. Whitehall was a wedding present for Henry Flaglers third wife, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler. Her portrait hangs in the Music Room. Henry and Mary Lily did not have children, but Mary Lily was quite close to her family and enjoyed entertaining them as guests at Whitehall. Upon her passing, Mary Lily bequeathed Whitehall to her beloved niece, Louise Clisby Wise Lewis. A photo of Louise is on display in the West Room, and appropriately so, as she sold Whitehall to hotel developers and the West Room is what remains of the hotel addition today. What do you see? A barrister. What do some people see? They see a black woman and only see someone who could be a criminal, a defendant in court, because that is a stereotype most associated with black men and women. These racial stereotypes are so deeply entrenched in us even when we don’t realise or acknowledge them. As a brown woman navigating predominantly white spaces, I have been: 👉🏽mistaken for a cleaner or service staff several times when I was a professor 👉🏽 Racially profiled in my own University 👉🏽 mistaken for a waitress at an exclusive reception where I gave a keynote talk 👉🏽 asked by a student if he could have a white male professor as supervisor because that would be better And many more such incidents of course. We all make decisions based on these templates we carry in our brains, we form stereotypes based on what we see around us and from our experiences and memories, we judge people very quickly based on labels we assign to them and the membership of groups based on skin colour. Sometimes they are a matter of life and death. And what we need to think about is what we are going to do about it. We all have individual accountability and responsibility to address our own biases. And urgently. Darius wrote: Being quite anxious to get back to photographing humans, I ventured out this weekend and did just that. I’ve started a project focussed on the LGBTQ+ community, photographing people who have managed to be inspired and positive enough to find either new creative outlets for themselves during lockdown or spend more time on those that they were already doing before it happened. She gave me some words about who she is and what she does, and I’d really appreciate it if you could read them. I loved spending time with her. She’s so warm and gave so much of herself for this shoot. I felt half my job was done for me. Andreena, London E17, August 2020 Andreena Leeanne, age 39, is an out and proud Black working-class Lesbian Poet & Inspirational Speaker from London. She writes and performs poetry to come to terms with and speak out about her personal experiences with homelessness, mental health, childhood sexual abuse & the many other challenges she has faced in her life. By speaking her truth, she hopes to inspire and empower others to speak their truth and take action. Her debut collection CHARRED launches on Friday 9th October 2020. In January 2015 Andreena founded Poetry LGBT Open Mic Night. Poetry LGBT is a warm and welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community to come together to share their experiences through poetry and spoken word. It is a vital and much needed space for the LGBTQ+ community to share, create and express themselves. Andreena facilitates these sessions live at physical venues and online. In this picture she is connecting with her audience all over the world via Zoom. Andreena discovered and fell in love with the Handpan drum in 2017. She had this one specifically made for her in 2020 which she taught herself to play during the UK government Covid-19 lockdown. She named this beautiful instrument Pan.
