In a rehab start in Triple A Sacramento on Saturday, Johnny Cueto pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings, giving up only hit on a slow roller to short, striking out four, and walked none. His command and stuff were both very sharp, which is surprising considering he hasn’t pitched since late April. Cueto threw 48 pitches, and likely will have to more rehab starts before coming off the DL. This is great news for the Giants. Before going down with an elbow injury, Cueto had an ERA south of one, and was arguably the best pitcher in baseball at the time. While the Giants have gotten surprising contributions for Andrew Suarez and Dereck Rodriguez, they’re obviously lacking front of the rotation starters outside of Madison Bumgarner. When Bumgarner and Cueto were healthy in 2016, they formed arguably the league’s most dominant 1-2 punch and carried the Giants to the postseason. As the Giants continue to hang around at 40-39, Cueto’s return may be what they need to give them an extra level of confidence. Having another reliable starter would also take pressure off the bullpen, which was has been overused this season. Especially with a tough schedule coming up, the Giants need Cueto badly. They only have to wait another week or two, because he’s rehabbing much faster than anyone anticipated and doesn’t look like he missed he beat. Unlike how Bumgarner struggled when first coming off the DL, I would expect Cueto to return to the form he had before he got hurt. Obviously he won’t be able to maintain an ERA south of one, but it shouldn’t sky rocket 2.50, and considering the lowest ERA in the rotation right now is Chris Stratton’s 4.14 ERA, it clear that they would obviously take that. With Cueto back and the surprising contributions from Rodriguez and Suarez, the Giants may be fine with the way their rotation is. The Giants have sent down OF Mac Williamson and have called up OF Austin Slater. After having such a strong start and locking up an everyday spot in left field, Williamson hasn’t been the same since he suffered a concussion. He’s only hitting .213, with only one homerun since returning. He’s still a tremendous fielder in left, so he could once again become a useful asset if he comes back 75% of the slugger he was before the concussion. He really did look lost at the plate though, so some time in the minors will help. This is already the third time Slater has been called up this year, but this time he may have a chance to stay. Slater has been having a tremendous season in Triple A, hitting .344 with 5 homeruns and 32 RBI. In 127 at bats last year, he hit .282 with 3 homeruns and was one of the few bright spots of a horrible season for the Giants. He’s not as good of a fielder as Williamson, but he’s not a liability by any means. As mentioned before, Slater has a chance to make sure he stays for good this time around. That’s because the Giants have been schuffling between many options in left, getting close to zero production. Alen Hanson has done a fine job in left so far, but it would be better if he could move to third base when facing lefties so Pablo Sandoval doesn’t have to start vs them. Hunter Pence and Austin Jackson are the only options then to start in left vs lefties, and neither have done well with the former hitting below .200 while the later has a -1.1 WAR. If Slater makes the most of his opportunities, he could work his way into starting in left field vs lefties. He’s shown before that he has all the tools to succeed in the majors, and I hope that he is given the playing time he needs to produce. As for Williamson, this isn’t the end of the road quite yet for him, but his next stint in the majors will probably be his last chance before the Giants finally cut ties with him.
