In the middle of a cathedral-like grove in Bull Creek Flat, just beyond the echo of axes and saws that were tearing down the redwood forests around them, our founders were compelled to harness their knowledge and influence to protect the magnificent coast redwood forest. But there’s more to this story: Our founders were also leaders in the discriminatory and oppressive pseudoscience of eugenics in the early 20th century. As we at Save the Redwoods League bring values of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all elements of our organizational culture, we need to publicly acknowledge the reality of our own history and the reprehensible beliefs of our founders. The full narrative of our nation’s history has long been swept under the rug, reinforcing a society that is fraught with injustice and institutional racism. Stags can actually have up to 20 tines, which gives them a very regal look indeed, for those lucky enough to see these beautiful, elusive animals. The Barasingha hard-ground swamp deer (Branderi Barasingha) is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh in Central India. It was very close to extinction when a successful breeding program and conservation practices at Kanha National Park brought the animals back from the brink. Today the national park, best known as a tiger reserve, is the only place on the planet to see the endangered deer in the wild. The Barasingha are magnificent creatures when you see them standing tall in a meadow, with the golden sunlight of India lighting up their coats. Wo(oooooooooooooooo)w! Can you spot the animal in the bottom center of this picture? 👀 We have recent pictures of a coyote in the park! While we have coyotes, they have only been documented a couple times here in the monument, so these photos are a big deal to us. The coyote is a bit difficult to see because of their camouflage -- the ability to blend in with their surroundings. This makes coyotes able to sneak up and ambush their prey.
