It had always been a dream of mine to visit Bwindi, the name alone evoked such a sense of adventure and the unknown for me and so to have the chance to set foot in the national park was an experience I’ll never forget and one that was deeply moving for me, being able to see mountain gorillas in the wild was just so special what an absolute privilege it is to share the world with such an array of beautiful life, I never feel more enlivened and enriched than when surrounded by nature, what a place this world is!! . . This blackback is around 10 years old and his hair will gradually turn to silver over the next few years, it’s likely depending on the group structure that he will not mate until he’s 15-20 years coupled with a gestation period of 8.5 months, an approximate 4 year birth interval and you have really slow population growth. 🇬🇧 Today we want to remind you the story of Leon, the gorilla who lived in Loro Parque for 8 years and who then left for South America to form his own family. In addition, we take the opportunity to highlight the work of modern zoos and animal embassies like Loro Parque in protecting biodiversity and watching over the welfare of the animals with such attention. León and his brother Aladín arrived from Israel to be part of the group of single male gorillas. Since Loro Parque is a reserve for the European project of conservation of endangered species, which guarantees and coordinates the survival of the species, Leon was selected after 8 years in the Park as the ideal male for his genetic, physical and psychological characteristics, to join two females and start his own family in the Belo Horizonte Zoo in Brazil. Thus, at present, Leon lives with Imbi and Lou Lou, with whom he has already had three offspring in total. Today is World Gorilla Day 🦍 . In the 1980s, on the brink of extinction, only 242 mountain gorillas were left around the Virunga mountains. Today, over 600 individuals call these mountains home and together with Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest population, mountain gorilla numbers have surpassed 1,000 individuals for the first time in almost a century and the IUCN reclassified the species from critically endangered to endangered in 2018. . The researchers also that conflict is most likely to involve alpha male gorillas who act as the protectors of their close-knit communities. The investigation was focused on interactions between 10 groups of mountain gorillas in Rwanda over the course of a year. The experts combined their observations with data collected by the Karisoke Research Center between 2003 and 2015. The research team found that male gorillas often engaged in aggressive fights to protect their communities. On the other hand, the experts discovered that bonds formed between former group members drastically reduced hostility between the familiar males. Such reunions often led to friendly behavior, such as grooming and playing. Study lead author Dr. Melanie Mirville explained that the bonds formed between gorillas were so strong that their interactions were usually peaceful, even after years of separation. - New research! Tool use is innate in chimpanzees but not bonobos, their closest evolutionary relative.
Scientists say they have successfully extracted eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos, a step on the way to possibly saving the subspecies from extinction. Ten eggs were harvested from the female rhinos, named Najin and Fatu, at the @olpejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The scientists hope to use them to create viable embryos that can be transferred into surrogates, as neither of the donor rhinos can carry a pregnancy to term. The next step is to select female southern white rhinos, another rhino subspecies, at Ol Pejeta to serve as surrogate mothers. It was during my conservation work in Indonesia, on the island of Borneo, in East Kalimantan. We were mainly working to release rescued captive sun bears back into a wilder environment. But this day we went to visit a sort of zoo-amusement park. Our goal was to collect information and alert a bigger organisation about the animals that were showcased, in the hope of rescuing some of them. This young gibbon was at the back of a stand, he gave me his hand as to seek help and empathy. It was frustrating as we couldnt do anything to help him at the time of the picture. Sadly, I am unsure if anything was done to rescue these poor animals after our visit. The Zoo is home to 8 Critically Endangered western lowland gorillas, including HJ, the latest addition to our bachelor group, and baby Angela, who lives with her mother, father, and aunties in our family group. In Africa, gorilla habitat is being destroyed by unsustainable mining for coltan, a mineral used in the manufacture of handheld electronic devices. Recycling electronics responsibly decreases the demand for coltan, thereby reducing mining and keeping toxins out of the environment. When you recycle handheld electronics through our partner ECO-CELL at the L.A. Zoo, a portion of the proceeds go to conservation nonprofits such as Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE), which works to safeguard the Grauer’s gorilla, one of the most endangered primates on the planet. I watched today as the team consisting of rangers, and veterinarians, battled for four hours in the most appalling weather, to save the life of a female giraffe. We responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillised; this is an extremely particular process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can extremely easily suffocate when tranquillised, so the vet team has to wake it immediately its fallen unconscious, and then hold its neck and head down to stop it standing. Once the procedure is complete they’ll release the neck and it will stand of its own accord. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of them trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything she could at us, we shivered in pouring rain, and warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. The giraffe stayed with us right until the very end and then finally I think all the assembled, including the patient, realised we had come to the end of the road. I am always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. They tried today like I’ve not seen before; they didn’t fail, they just didn’t beat the overwhelming odds that nature threw at them in so many guises. If I ever doubted the importance of these vets and rangers, I no longer do. - The eastern gorilla is the largest primate, & can weigh 450lbs+. They have massive builds with enormous strength, which they use to forage on strong plants, plow through the dense forest, and dominate opposition. These mountain gorillas are adapted to high altitudes, with a thick coat.

Some of the gorillas are victims of poaching, others were orphaned when their mothers were deliberately murdered by rebel forces. Either way the goal is to return them to the wild where rangers protect 60% of the worlds remaining mountain gorillas - just 600 animals - living in Virunga. Despite its environmental riches the political instability in DRC understandably deters many would-be tourists, ironically depriving the park of the very income it needs to survive.
