Happy Valentina’s Day! 🚀🚀🚀 On this day 57 years ago, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space. She completed 48 orbits around Earth and remained in space for a total of 71 hours during her mission. One interesting thing to note from this mission was it was all automated controls. Valentina never took hold of the controls. June 16, 1963 marks the beginning of her three day journey and we use it as a day to celebrate all women in space. For me personally, space represents the best of humanity with inclusion and diversity high on that list. It is important to celebrate the firsts (male and female) so we can see how far we have come in under 60 years. I have never, not once in my life, had a phobia. Until now. And I’m gonna be honest, I never understood them, I always thought “get over it, it’s just a spider, etc. walk away.” Until l, of course myself, became severely claustrophobic. To the point my entire body broke out in sweat and I was drenched within 30 seconds and my face looked like a very ripe tomato...and I almost passed out while trying on my finished spacesuit and helmet for the first time. It is not just mental, it is very physical. BUT, our mental minds do control a lot, if not everything. After six months, I was not able to overcome my claustrophobia, but I was able to come to a type of meeting of the minds with it. When we calm our minds and sit with the fear, NOT try and push it away, we can sit with it in a different way, that makes it “doable”. Playing an astronaut in AWAY made me push into the sharp edges in a way I never thought it would. This was such an important lesson for me...in so many ways. I hope that in sharing this you might feel less alone in whatever it is that takes over your mind and therefore body. Aerospace Medicine in the Crew Dragon English // Español Michael Reed Barratt is the medic responsible for the Dragon Rocket launch. Dr. Michael R. Barratt was selected by NASA in 2000. Board certified in Internal and Aerospace Medicine, he has participated in two spaceflights. In 2009, Dr. Barratt served as Flight Engineer for Expedition 19/20. This marked the transition from three to six permanent International Space Station crew members. During this time, he performed two spacewalks. He also flew on STS-133, which delivered the Permanent Multipurpose Module and fourth Express Logistics Carrier. Currently, Dr. Barratt serves in the International Space Station Operations and Integration branches to handle medical issues and onorbit support. // Michael Reed Barratt es el médico responsable del lanzamiento del Dragon Rocket. What languages do you speak⁉️🗣 ⠀⠀⠀ 26 September is European Day of Languages and as an international organization with 22 Member States, we know how important communication is. ⠀⠀⠀ Maybe one of the best examples of multiculturalism is the @iss where astronauts come from different backgrounds and speak different languages but all work towards a common goal. ⠀⠀⠀ Last year @astro_luca celebrated European Day of Languages from the Station saying: Nine friends, four different languages: and all speak at least two of those. A 16-year-old girl from Amritsar recently received an invitation from NASA after she topped the International Space Olympiad (ISO) 2020. Hissaa, who is a class X student of DAV Public School, got invited to visit the John F Kennedy Space Centre in the US as she came first in the senior category of ISO. According to The Tribune, the Amritsar resident scored 78.75 marks collectively in the preliminary, intermediate and final test conducted by the International Space Olympiad.
