El doctor Jacinto Convit nació el 11 de septiembre de 1913 de la unión de Francisco Convit y Martí, inmigrante catalán, y Flora García Marrero, venezolana. El 19 de septiembre de 1932 empezó sus estudios en la Escuela de medicina de la Universidad Central de Venezuela. Cinco años más tarde recibió el título de Bachiller en Filosofía, y optó por el título de Doctor en Ciencias Médicas presentando el trabajo Fracturas de la Columna Vertebral en 1938. Sin embargo, su experiencia en el área sanitario-epidemiológica empezó un año antes cuando siendo aun estudiante fue invitado por Martín Vegas, profesor de dermatología en la Facultad de Medicina, y Carlos Gil Yépez a visitar la leprosería de Cabo Blanco ubicada en el departamento Vargas del Distrito Federal. Una vez que se graduó fue designado médico residente de esa leprosería, donde trabajo entre los años 1940 y 1943. Se desempeñó además, como director ad honorem de la Cruz Roja en La Guaira. Siempre se sintió conmovido por la estigmatización sufrida por los pacientes que sufrían de lepra, y trabajó por y con ellos. Hasta 1942 su lucha consistió en el aislamiento y tratamiento de los enfermos en los llamados leprocomios que dependían de la Dirección de Asistencia Social del Ministerio de Sanidad y Asistencia Social (MSAS). Posteriormente, fue médico director de las leproserías nacionales, luego médico director de los Servicios Antileprosos Nacionales, y después médico jefe de la División de Lepra, con lo cual tenía la responsabilidad organizar toda la red nacional de lucha contra la lepra. Su vida la dedicó a la investigación científica. Siendo uno de sus mayores logros el desarrollo de la vacuna contra la lepra en 1987. I am very pleased to announce that i have been nominated for the fourth edition of the Prix Élysée @elyseemusee with the support of @parmigianifleurier Just before this COVID situation i had the chance to travel to Jefferson New Hampshire to meet an extraordinary woman named Rosemary Jacobs and begin a new project whith her titled «  Life and adventures of a silver woman on planet Earth » Rosemary suffers from a rare condition called Argyria. At the age of 9 years old, a doctor gave her nose drops for a recurring nasal condition. They contained Silver Nitrate, a highly photo-sensible substance that is important in a great number of photographic processes. Her body has been somehow photo-sensitized with this chemical and her face exposed to the sun, has turned to a silver gray. Her relation to photography is very special and has a strong resonance with my interest in this medium.  Alexa Brunet, Arguiñe Escandón and Yann Gross, Magali Koenig, Thomas Mailaender, Moises Saman, Assaf Shoshan, Alys Tomlinson and Kurt Tong were selected from 255 applications from more than 50 different nationalities.  The nominees of the fourth edition of the Prix Elysée receive a contribution of 5’000 CHF towards the initial presentation of their original project, as a carte blanche in the nominees book, published in January 2021. The winning project will then be chosen by an international jury of experts in the spring of 2021 and will be revealed to the public in the summer of 2021. A data, presente no Brasil desde o século XVI com encenações religiosas, foi decretada em 1978 para regulamentar as profissões de técnicos de produções, diretores e atores, como Paulo Autran. Quem escolhemos para falar um pouco e representar tantos outros artistas.   Um dos maiores artistas dos palcos brasileiros, Paulo Autran recebeu o Prêmio Fundação Bunge em 1991 graças a sua carreira teatral. Nascido em 1922, no Rio de Janeiro, escreveu sua primeira peça aos 11 anos, intitulada “As Onças da Jamaica” e em 1949 estreou na Companhia Tônia Carrero. Em seguida, foi contratado pelo Teatro Brasileiro de Comédia (TBC), marcando sua estreia no teatro profissional.   Em 1956 fundou sua própria companhia ao lado de Tônia Carrero e Adolfo Celi. O lançamento foi marcado com a peça Otelo, de Shakespeare em 1956, a qual Paulo atuou como o personagem-título. A parceria foi desfeita cinco anos depois e Autran seguiu protagonizando grandes peças teatrais, como a versão brasileira do musical “My Fair Lady”, de Frederick Loewe e Alan Jay Lerner, e “Liberdade, Liberdade” de Flávio Rangel e Millôr Fernandes, até montar sua própria companhia em 1966, onde viveu grandes personagens nos palcos, como Quixote, no musical “O Homem de La Mancha”, de Wasserman. Durante sua carreira, recebeu vários outros prêmios, como o Prêmio Saci, Shell de Teatro, Prêmio Air France e Festival de Brasília.   Na foto: Paulo Autran, Prêmio Fundação Bunge. Shoutout to creator/designer Nikola Salvi!! Although he didn’t get to see to the end of the creation of the Trevi in 1762, his designs mostly made it to the end product before he died in 1751. Salvi’s designs of the Trevi truly were the best-in all of Rome and the surrounding areas-as he was picked in a contest by Pope Clement XII of the best possible structure. Salvi oversaw the construction of the Trevi for 19 years until his death. Following his passing, Giuseppe Pannini, another exceptional artist, finished up Nikola’s work. However, the Trevi was so amazing that it had to wait for the perfect artist to complete it (it couldn’t settle for second best). Amidst this madness I am finally giving myself time to grieve my hero and our family matriarch Ahmom, AKA Jean B Stephens, who passed away on Sunday at 93. She was an amazing mom to six children and all of their friends, a legendary grandmother to all of us and all of our friends, and a proud great-grandmother. She was also an anthropologist, art historian, genealogist, painter, poet, forager, feminist, writer, and gardener, among many other things. A true aesthete and bon vivant who enriched the lives of so many. After raising her kids she went to college in her 40’s and became an anthropologist, pursuing field work in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. We shared so many wonderful times over the last 47 years. I always think of the American History road trip she and my grandfather took me on at age ten. And, when she was in her late 70’s she visited me in Alaska, chugging PBRs on a river trip while watching brown bears roam the delta. She loved that trip so much, it was a joy to witness. When dementia had robbed her memory and conversations proved a challenge there were still bursts of her light that poured out. Last spring on a walk she pointed out some daffodils. “A host” I said and she promptly recited the entire Wordsworth poem. The last time we had together I played a recording of a Whippoorwill’s call and she similarly proceeded to sing all the lyrics to “My Blue Heaven”. Thank you Ahmom. My father passed away on Tuesday, June 2. My babisko ,my best friend, muse of my “experimental art” projects is now my guardian angel. Getting personal but ... I just wanted to thank my lovely friends who supported me so much throughout the years. He thought me not to take life for granted and to be happy with what you have between moments. He fought a lot to be with us, had strength i can never understand. He needs to be on a medical journal for real. I always teased him calling him Terminator. I hope he’ll watch me make it happen and be proud of me. He, a film nerd, always wanted me to make a sci-fi film, I don’t know about that one :) I couldn’t be by his side for the past month as there’re still no flights back to Istanbul. (It’s hard being separated from family during grief, if anyone you know is going thru something similar hit me up) Everyday I’m grateful for his liver transplant donor, I think about him and his family often but especially today. If they only knew that it gave me 6 extra beautiful years with my dad. #TBT The Hampton House Motel (@historichamptonhouseofficial) was a Black motel and lounge in the #Brownsville neighborhood of Miami in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Iconic performers and activists such as Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X performed and stayed there. It was a place for Black residents to come together, enjoy the greatest performers of the day, and celebrate community. The Hampton House was preserved and restored in recent years to serve as an education and cultural center, centering the histories of Black life, segregation, and civil rights in #Miami. As these are histories that are frequently glossed over or simplified, the Historic Hampton House plays an essential role in telling the story of Miami’s past. One woman fought tirelessly for the preservation and restoration of this landmark and that was Enid Curtis Pinkney. Through her steadfast work in accessible education and historic preservation, Pinkney has benefited many generations of people of color in Miami. Pinkney was the first African-American president of both the Dade Heritage Trust and Natives of Dade and Pioneers of Miami. Pinkney was pivotal in the preservation of the Miami Circle, the Historic Hampton House Motel, and the memorialization of the Lemon City Cemetery, a mostly #Bahamian grave site in Little Haiti. Today Pinkney is the Vice Chair on the Board of Trustees for Virginia Key Beach Park, and CEO and President of the Historic Hampton House Motel. So, before advising others to stop committing suicide, just stop keeping someones mistakes to judge them years after years. This is life, here we come to learn everything from mistakes. Mistakes are common. Its impossible to find a man without mistakes. Without making mistakes how one can understand which is wrong and right. Many times I wondered how people find my minute mistakes so simply and why they remember it years after years. I dont know…..but I think its a timepass for them🤷. Now, Lemme point out a few things👉 Recently, a final year degree student committed suicide. She did it after the college principal confiscated her answer sheets and hall ticket alleging her of cheating in the examination. I think it wasnt the reason but the actual reason was her fear of those around her. Fear on how her parents behave, how her neighbour aunty criticizes it, how her friends and classmates discuss it, how others take it as an example to advise others etc...etc… Obviously,  it will happen, even when she becomes 40 years old,  her neighbour aunty will continue to explain it to others like ooi sheela, you know at the age of20,  she was accused of cheating in the examination hall and dont forget to inform Maria, Susheela, Rosy too. Yes,  this is what I call the root of depression. So simple, most people suicide as they fear their your interest in keeping others mistakes for as long as they or you live. Then, if we come to a celebritys life,  OMG.. ITS TOO CRITICAL. He/she must fear her family, neighbors, fans, news reporters,  facebook users, youtubers,  instagrammers, tweeting eagles, and now roasters. Obviously, it may lead to the thought of ending everything within a piece of rope or packet of poison or a blade. Next,  It is easy to say SHARE, COMMUNICATE, DISCUSS..but with whom? I am 100% sure, 90% of our population dont know how to keep secrets. Some will publish a secret within minutes to days, some after months, some after years. And there are some who share it as an example when another tells them a secret similar to it. Then, who will share their sensational secrets with you people??? Taking a break from Instagram was very timely as my Pawpaw passed away this past Tuesday. Spending more time with my family was exactly what was needed. I will miss so much about him but am thankful I can grieve with hope. I’m so thankful for my family, and my mom in particular, who reminded us to call our pawpaw, send him thank you cards, and to cherish his unsolicited (but wise) advice. 🤍 I’m thankful for how he shaped my mom and how she raised me and now how I raise my boys. Jose Celso Barbosa (1857-1921) was the first Puerto Rican, and one of the first people of African and European descent, to receive a medical degree in the United States. Born in Puerto Rico, he moved to New York City in 1875 in order to further his education. In 1877 he started attending the University of Michigan, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1880. After this, he returned to Puerto Rico where he set up a practice, and introduced the idea of employers providing health care for employees. GUCCIO GUCCI: When the name Gucci comes to mind, most fashionphiles conjure the image of Alessandro Michele has dreamed up in the last few years.But long before marquee designers were running the show at Gucci, the fashion house got its start as a leather shop. Born in 1881, Guccio was the son of an Italian leather maker. Guccio was not too keen on taking the same occupational route as his father, so he travelled to London and Paris, where he worked as a waiter, dishwasher and concierge. In London, he worked at the prestigious Savoy Hotel as a lift attendant, and it was during this time that he took note of the beautiful luggage styles that he saw.On his return to Florence , he did follow in his father’s footsteps. The first Gucci shop was founded in Florence in 1921, In the beginning, Gucci’s main business was making saddles and other accessories for horseback riders and the red and green woven stripe , inspired by saddle details. in general many of his designs were inspired by horseracing, and his company quickly became known for its incredible level of craftsmanship.Leather was hard to come by in the mid-1930s, because of sanctions against Italy, so Gucci began experimenting with alternative textiles. This led to the very first signature Gucci print: small interconnected diamonds in dark brown, woven into a tan hemp fabric. In 1932 Guccio created the first loafer shoe with a gilded snaffle, as well as a wonderful selection of luggage ties, shoes and the famous handbags with a bamboo handle was born under similar circumstances in 1947; Gucci artisans were scrambling to find materials towards the end of World War II and discovered that they could use Japanese bamboo to craft unique bag handles . Guccio enlisted his three sons Aldo, Vasco, and Rodolfo to join the business in 1938. The year 1953 is famous for two reasons: the death of Guccio Gucci, and the opening of the first Gucci store overseas. Boutiques started to spring up everywhere, and the glamorous ‘GG’ symbol that is still used today, was created in the 1960s. When I met Frank and Jeanne at their home in Oregon, I was overcome with emotion by the love that surrounded me. Cherished memorabilia and family photos... Frank walked me through their house, proudly showing me bits and pieces of his remarkable life with his best friend and wife, Jeanne. Frank and Jeanne are in their mid-nineties... They had half an hour to grab what they could from their home before it was consumed by the fires. The home they planned to live out their lives in is now nothing more than ash and an old wood stove. I can’t even imagine how it must feel to lose a century’s worth of memorabilia. Frank and Jeanne always have a way of finding the light through the darkness, and I know they’re just happy to have each other, but it sure would be nice to help these two incredibly special people in any way possible.
