I’ve done things I regret as a dog mom. I think we’ve all done things with our pets that we aren’t super proud of. One of my biggest regrets: How early I spayed/neutered Moose and Koda. I wish I would have waited until they were older and more developed. They should look like very different dogs, but I prevented that from happening. In my mind, 6 months was far too young to have them “fixed”. I won’t know the repercussions of my decisions until they are much older, but the “unknowing” makes me all the more anxious. if I could go back in time, I would have waited. We, as a society, talk about sexual behaviors in dogs like it’s a bad thing: going into heat, mounting, marking... We try so hard to suppress these behavior causing hormones, we forget about the good that those same hormones do for the body. Sex hormones play a large role in the growth and development of your dog. THEY ARE IMPORTANT Cutting off the source of these hormones prematurely can be devastating to the long term health of your pet. If you can, wait. Wait until they are fully mature, physically and sexually. By waiting until your dog reaches sexual and physical maturity, you will be allowing your pet to grow and develop naturally, reducing or eliminating the consequences associated with early spays and neuters. There is no denying the benefits of spaying/neutering your pet. It can lengthen the lifespan of your dog by +20% However... By spaying/neutering your dog too early, you can do more harm than good.
