Hamilton City Council has removed a statue of Captain Hamilton from its civic square after a formal request from Waikato-Tainui. Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton was a naval commander who led a detachment of the 43rd regiment at the Battle of Gate Pā in Tauranga during the New Zealand Wars. (I was very hesitant to post this). Heartbreak is diving down to discover that the coral reef is completely dead and no creatures, save for some minnows, inhabit the waters anymore. I grew up going to Costa Rica to visit my family and every year, we go to Isla Tortuga. A stunning island by all means. I remember that on my last trip there, I noticed a lot of garbage in the ocean. I didn’t remember that from when I was young. But nothing would prepare me for what I was going to see later that day. My beloved reef-once filled with gorgeous fish species of all kinds, and colorful coral, was completely dead. There was nothing left. In the few short years since my last visit, over-tourism, pollution. as well as a lack of respect had resulted in a decimated marine environment. I swam for a few hours and headed up to the beach where I took this picture. I had a really amazing time. But that trip was equally haunting. I never expected the reef to be dead within a few years. It was extremely jarring. Please take care of our oceans. Ocean and wildlife conservation is more import now than ever. Also: please check your sunscreen prior to swimming in a reef. Many of them are extremely toxic and tragically destroy the reefs that are a cornerstone of our ecosystem. Please do research prior to swimming in the ocean and use reef-friendly sunscreens when possible. Please share this. Earlier in July, 7 tonnes of shark were found aboard an illegal Sri Lankan fishing vessel in Seychelles waters. While shark fishing is regulated in Seychelles, many international vessels continue to target these fish within our waters. As of yet, we do not know the specific shark species which were caught in this incident, but with a long list of sharks being critically endangered, it is likely that this catch would have affected some at-risk species. This is the fourth vessel to be intercepted by the Coast Guard this year and it is believed to have the same owner as the vessel involved in the previous incident (only a few weeks before this one, also in July). The fine of Rs400,000 for the previous incident only covers the cost of one 10 hour patrol by the coastguard, and as the vessel then had to be escorted out of our waters, our government would have likely ended up spending more money on operations than the fine would have been able to cover. Should it be confirmed that the vessels have the same owner, not only would the fine be too little to cover costs of dealing with this illegal activity, but it would also show that the fine was not enough of a deterrent for the owners to cease their activity in Seychelles waters. In short, the repercussions of illegal fishing in Seychelles are non-threatening and seemingly ineffective. Are the fines being imposed reflective of the value of these endangered species? Destinations Shillong Umiam Lake Umiam Lake is one of the biggest artificial lakes in Meghalaya that is situated about 15 km from Shillong. It is more easily recognised as Bara Pani, and covers an area of about 220 sq km. The surrounding Sylvan Hills and green Khasi pines add to the majesty of this vast lake, which was created when the Umiam river was dammed to store water for hydroelectric power generation. Though it was initially established as a dam or a reservoir, it is now a popular tourist attraction. It is also known for water sports and adventure facilities such as kayaking, water cycling, scooting and boating. Since the lake boasts picturesque and panoramic surroundings, it is often compared with the beautiful lakes of Scotland. There is a lovely garden near its shores called the Lum Nehru Park, which is a must-visit point for birdwatchers. Apart from being a popular picnic spot, the park is also known for its orchid house, aviary and sprawling lawns. Inilah gambaran pantai barat Aceh dua tahun pasca tsunami. Tepatnya pada November 2006. Di sejumlah tempat terpaksa membuka jalan baru dan belum diaspal karena jalan lama hancur. Tapi pantai tetap indah dan selalu menggoda untuk diabadikan. Foto ini gambaran di daerah Lhoknga menuju gunung Geurutee, Lamno.. Pada November 2006 ifu, saya bersama mas Ahmadun Yosi Herfanda, cerpenis/novelis Aceh Saiful Bahri, dan sejumlah kawan lain berkeliling ke sejumlah tempat di kawasan Banda Aceh dan Aceh Besar untuk merekam sekaligus menghayati jejak-jejak tragedi itu. Kami berada di Banda Aceh untuk menjadi pemateri sebuah workshop menulis untuk pelajar se-Aceh di Saree, kawasan pengunungan Seulawah, Aceh Besar. Sehabis workshop itulah kami diajak keliling. Tentu saja kawasan itu bukan tempat asing bagi saya. Tapi pemandangan yang kami lihat betul-betul membuat kami sulit berkata-kata. Tsunami memang tragedi tak terlupakan bagi orang Aceh. Tapi tsunami pula yang telah mengubah sejarah Aceh dari daerah berdarah menjadi tempat yang damai. Tsunami juga mengubah tata kota, sikap dan perilaku sosial hingga politik di Aceh. MI 290920 . Took a couple of days off.. my first real break since March because if you work really hard, it’ll all be ok.. right?! I usually travel to give my brain time to think and my head some peace so this break to #donegal was much needed! I’ll do a wee blog but the weather was on our side for once, the campervan from @eastcoastcampersni was top notch as were they, the dog came too.. we watched the sun set whilst a horse went for a swim, saw dolphins from the beach, drank cold wine with seafood overlooking the sea @barfiskdownings had a great Guinness here and there including at the @oldeglenbar and met some lovely people @sleepy_hollows_campsite (they give you incense when you arrive and light a campfire... now that’s a holiday feeling right there!) The weather broke and I realised I’m a fine weather camper, I blame years of damp Duke of Ed expeditions! お彼岸に両親のお墓参りに来ることができた。 手を合わせて拝んだら、不思議とスッキリした！◎ 心のどこかで親のことが気になってたんだな。亡くなっても魂は生き残る。話しかけてナイスコミニケーションができたよ。ありがとう！ 少し時間があったので商店街を練り歩いた。今やアーケードのない富屋町を通ると、なんとも言えない感慨深い気持ちがこみ上げてきた。そして幼少期の様々な事象がフラッシュバックした。 ついでに祖母の代から母親まで50年やっていた富屋町のペルレ美容室の跡地に行った。2006年に閉店&取り壊しした場所だ。 幼少期含めた高校までの実家にいる時も都会に出てからも、常に最初に帰ってくる場所だった。 しかし、今はただの駐車場になっており、切なさしかない。 そういや、瀬戸大橋って高校1年生のときに完成したんだったな。 実家もペルレ美容室ももう無いが、また丸亀に帰って来よう。 #瀬戸大橋 #お彼岸 - @keioooyyvovivav on Instagram

Reconnaissons la Nature et sa valeur intrinsèque, et soyons punis et condamnés, oui punis, pour les blessures que nous lui infligeons. Elle nous poursuit et nous condamne, que son droit de défense nous intente un procès, à toi petit homme qui l’empoisonne en lui balançant à la gueule tes bouteilles en plastique depuis le confort de ta voiture seconde main, à ces bateaux échoués sur son récif qui pissent noir sur son lagon, et ces politiciens qui bavent et postillonnent leurs poisons corrompus, goudronnants la vie mauricienne en bitume sur lequel ils peuvent marcher. Faisons comme l’Equateur qui inscrit la Pachamama (Terre Mère) dans sa constitution comme sujet de droit, ou comme l’Inde avec le Gange qui aujourd’hui a les mêmes droits qu’une personne physique, ou comme la Nouvelle-Zélande avec son fleuve Whanganui. Ayons une réelle volonté de faire évoluer le Droit, et arrêtons de croire que seuls les marginaux hippies aux cheveux gras peuvent penser qu’un écosystème à le droit à la vie et à la paix. Nous faisons face à une réalité irrécusable. Concrétisons d’avantage un droit environnemental et jugeons vraiment les dégradations causées à l’environnement et au climat. Réveillons l’humanité qui est en nous, celle que nous partageons tous, celle qui nourrit le bien au fond de nos coeurs, celle qui est juste et qui entend et comprend le monde d’aujourd’hui, celle qui sait partager, valoriser, et apprécier le monde autour de nous. ((HISTORY)) Keelung adalah kota pelabuhan yang terletak di paling utara Taiwan, jaraknya 15-20 km dari Taipei Keelung awalnya diduduki oleh suku Ketagalan, sebuah suku pribumi Taiwan. Lalu ada ekspedisi Spanyol datang, lalu Spanyol membuat banteng San Salvador. Tahun 1642, Keelung diduduki Belanda, VOC lalu merubahnya menjadi Fort Noort-Hollant Ketika Dinasti Ming datang menyerang (Penyerangan Benteng Zeelandia), Belanda akhirnya melarikan diri ke Dejima, Jepang Di zaman Qing, Keelung menjadi pusat perdagangan, dan mengalami banyak perang, antara lain Perang Opium dan Perang Sino-Prancis Tahun 1895, Jepang mengambil alih Taiwan, Keelung mulai bangkit dengan pembangunan pelabuhan, mengalahkan Pelabuhan Tamsui dan Kaohsiung. With the most recent extension of the stay at home order it seems there were a few concessions made for engaging in solo activities. As much as we want to get back out there, please be mindful that going out in or on the ocean by yourself is much more dangerous and risky than going with somebody else. In fact, when it comes to safety concerns for things like paddling, diving, snorkeling, swimming, surfing, etc., and hiking for that matter, most would agree it’s not a good idea to go alone. We understand the intent is to prevent large social gatherings, but if it’s not safe to go with even one other person to have that buddy system in case something goes wrong, that doesn’t make it safer to go alone.
