Week 11 of MappingAtoZ: Kevo, Finland 🇫🇮 There hasn’t been an easier letter to pick a place for than K... Kevo Research Station Now this may seem like a pretty random choice to most, but for the few who have had the chance to visit know it’s magic. For me, Kevo was a place for research, albeit amateur. It was the study area of my undergrad dissertation. Spending a couple of weeks trudging though 4ft of snow, collecting data on the snow pack and the environment over, certainly left me with a lot of memories. I wasn’t sure how to represent this unique arctic environment, the map I settled on was ‘My Journey’ across this valley. Over seven days I spanned the valley collecting data at 65 locations, these are my transects and their elevation profiles between the 6th and 12th March 2016. I tried to work on some styling here that shows the routes fading into the white snowy hilltops and cutting over the icy lake surface. Scholars writing about this period also have to make decisions about how to refer to the people and places they discuss in their published work—&, as Editor of the @creatensw-funded @stjohnscemeteryproject & an ethnohistorian, I am no different. A couple of weeks ago I published Name-Calling, my “Dual Naming Policy” on the website, a policy which has been applied to all published essays in the @stjohnscemeteryproject. We are starting off with two from @cantinamarilina Both Nero d’Avola, a traditional grape of Sicily. Sikele Rosso shows the Nero’s powerful, dark fruited strength, while in the Fedelie Rosato, a more playful side emerges, tart and fresh with spice! Cantina Maralina is an organic family estate in the hills of Noto, in the Southeast tip of Sicily. The estate is 60 hectares, half vineyard, half polycultural farm. Exploring the 100 sites of military significance in our Hall of Service, In That Rich Earth tells the story of more than a century of Australian service in conflict and peacekeeping. Buy your copy at the link in our bio. From 1939 to 1945 Australia grew from being a nation unprepared for war to one whose population was mobilised for total war. More women joined Australias fighting forces than at any time before or since. 990,000 Australians served in the Second World War, out of a population of approximately 7 million. Wewak 1945 The last battle on the mainland of New Guinea was fought to eliminate the final remnants of General Adachi Hatazo’s 18th Army that had fallen back on the port town of Wewak. In April, Major General Horace “Red Robbie” Robertson had taken over command of the 6th Division from Alan Ramsay. Red Robbie’s plan was to land Australian commandos to the east of Wewak while the 19th Brigade advanced from the west. Overhead, the Japanese would be pounded by the Beaufort bombers of No. 71 Wing, supplemented by aircraft from No. 6 and No. 15 Squadrons. The Beauforts had played an integral part in the campaign along the north coast from Aitape. They dropped 1,236 tons of bombs in support of the army. The commandos encountered little opposition, but the 19th Brigade endured heavy fighting as they seized Wewak Point and the airfield. By 15 May the town was in Australian hands, but the survivors of Adachi’s army escaped into the mountains, where they would continue to fight until 15 August. Some chose to fight to the death, even after the surrender order, while others crawled into the jungle and starved.
