HIGH COUNTRY will premiere this month at the @breck_film and @crestedbuttefilmfestival festivals in Colorado. — I was sitting in a park one evening in New York City recollecting with a friend on the incredible stories I had heard growing up. My parents and their friends, who had lived in Crested Butte, Colorado in the 70s, would recount to me these stranger-than-fiction tales of the community of old miners, ski-bums, and outlaws who converged in Crested Butte. As a kid, I was in awe of these stories. So, on that evening under the tree, I decided to make a film recounting some of these tales from Crested Butte’s early days, and now, five and a half years later, it’s done! I can’t wait to share it with the world. In the costumes of the Mongol warriors, it was important to show the bloodthirsty character and power of the army. We worked closely with historians and reenactors of this era to emphasize this in our artistic styling. The Merkes warlords suit is based on a leather case covered with plates. Each plate has its own size. First our blacksmith forged them out of metal manually. Then they were molded by hand, not stamped, from lightweight polyurethane instead of heavy metal. The hem of the robe under the armor is covered with hand embroidery. The outfit is completed by a metal helmet with a horse tail and a camail with plates, also a massive hand-cast belt — all these are distinctive symbols of noble warriors. On the feet there were leather boots with abundant appliqué. The armor team for this image included: the foundryman, the blacksmith, the leather craftsman, the armor craftsman, the shoemaker, the embroiderer, the fabricator of aging of fabric and leather. Gunks History Part 5: The Vulgarians rebel An AMC climber named Art Gran had grown frustrated with the restrictions and safety procedures, and began associating with a band of talented climbers from NY’s City College in 1957. Gran became the mentor to these climbers, who expressed their defiance and called themselves “The Vulgarians”. More of a collective than an actual club, their members also included a growing contingent of females, showing that rabble-rousing and hard climbing was not gender-specific. Much has been written of Vulgarian exploits, which involved raucous parties, nude climbing, and basically anything they could do to thumb their collective noses at the Gunks’ climbing establishment. One of their better non-climbing contributions was the introduction of a publication known as Vulgarian Digest, or VD for short. This quarterly production featured witty and irreverent writing, and a proclivity for jokes about farm animal copulation. Perhaps most dangerous was the Vulgarian Grand Prix. Done in the style of the French Le Mans, the races involved tearing around dirt roads like the Old Clove or the roads up todddc the Minnewaska Hotel. The dust clouds were so huge and blinding that usually whoever got out in front would win for visibility reasons alone. Were it not for their fantastic climbing abilities though, they would never have had the same impact. Vulgarians were responsible for the higher standards toward the end of the ‘50s. In 1957, Jim McCarthy and Hans Kraus established the third 5.8 in the Gunks with Fat Stick, impressive for its lengthy post-crux runout. Soon after, 5.8 quickly became consolidated, with classics like Birdland, Yellow Belly, Pas de Deux, Double Crack and Drunkard’s Delight all going in. Pas de Deux created some backlash, because McCarthy had rappelled down it first and banged in a few pitons before attempting it. Art Gran gave no credit for the FA in his 1964 guidebook, noting “Unfortunately, not put in on the lead.” Though McCarthy was experimenting with new tactics that would be popular decades later, the conservative outcry led him to abandon such practices. *Words by @andywsalo - @gp_eighty_one on Instagram

Do you see anything different with the physique of one of these horses? The Onaqui Catalogue with others, works hard to document the horses on the range. The black gelding in front is actually a domestic horse. He was first seen in December with shoes on, which he has since lost. He kept to himself, but as you can see he has now integrated himself with this band. The bay stud is Evander, OQ11brS The older perlino mare Angel/Norma Jean, is OQ101cM The younger cream mare, Creampuff, is her half~sister (same sire) OQ159cM Currently, the domestic gelding does not have a range name. It is thought possibly by his looks, he might have some thoroughbred in him, but without his history it is hard to know. He may have been abandoned, or escaped and just wanted to run WILD and FREE! . . .
