So…why did you start music in the first place? If you are like me then you probably started so you can inspire others to trust in Christ as the One and Only Saviour. Before we chat about inspiring others, allow me briefly talk to you about 3 of the different hats people know me to carry. Becoming a pastor has been and incredible experience and it is my desire to see Christian artists grow in their spiritual walk to serve others well with their gifting. You will see me releasing music in the near future just like you and so understanding this journey is one of the reasons we will connect easier. Currently in the process of recording more music. The government is currently ordering our shutdown for at least 8 weeks. At this point, we have had to cancel 27 shows so far. This is an unmanageable situation. The 8x10’s rent alone, for two months is $20,000. There may be relief down the line for The 8x10, but insurance has already told us this event is not covered, so we are going to have to fight to get anything at all. Our main concern right now is our employees. We have set up this fundraiser to contribute to their financial needs while we are closed. We are asking for your help. We have created a VENMO account for donations. We chose VENMO due to the fact that if you link your account to a debit card, there is no fee to make a donation. If you decide to link to a credit card the fee is only 3%. VENMO is the platform that will get the most possible percentage of your money to the cause. Friends, I hope I won’t offend you with a small celebration in a sober time: Yesterday, we reached 1 million all-time streams on Spotify. That’s about 400,000 people all over the world streaming Arthur Moon, multiple times. It feels especially wild because a little over a year ago we had about 3,000 all-time streams, and honestly, I was about to quit. Not because I think these metrics say anything about the value of the work, but rather because I felt like I couldn’t get the doors open, like there was no way to access this locked building of the music industry, and so no one would ever get to hear this music that we (my brilliant generous collaborators and I) made for them. Music, or my music at least—it’s FOR people. It’s for you. It’s not meant to languish on a hard drive. Things are increasingly scary and heartbreaking right now. We’re losing loved ones and jobs and safety and homes and relationships and health for no reason other than the greed and hatred of a powerful few. And in my small corner of the world: Musicians much more successful and talented than me are barely scraping by (1 million streams, in case you weren’t aware, scrapes an unsustainable $6k, and even less of that goes to the artist when all is said and done). But almost entirely in the past year: YOU PLAYED MY SONGS ONE MILLION TIMES. I like to think that happened because the music touched you, held space for you, entertained you, challenged you, made you feel less alone. Whatever it was, thank you. ATHENS & EPIDAURUS FESTIVAL. This year we had the chance to collaborate with the iconic Athens & Epidaurus Festival on its 2020 concept and visual identity. An extremely interesting creative process resulted in a design and communication platform based on the everchanging forms of art. We envisioned art as a transforming and transformative visual entity, able to represent shows and performances through a bold, modernist and colorful aesthetic, that blends 60s and 70s vibes with contemporary elements. The Festival’s key visual develops into a system that channels all information needed, such as the venue or the show, using stretching graphic techniques, icons and color coding in a strategically targeted and efficient way. I’m so happy to have been able to celebrate pride as an openly bisexual woman with a circle that makes me feel seen, valid and heard always. Not a phase! Not confused! Not “gay straight or lying” and most definitely not succumbing to the all too frequent biphobic ass rhetoric of demanding “receipts” and perpetuating invalidation. As exciting as it is to have pride to celebrate so many things, as white members of the queer community we need to supplement that celebration with accountability. Queerness is not a cover up for white guilt, queerness does not erase whiteness, queerness is not a free pass to Black culture and queer oppression is not synonymous with the oppression of Black queer people. I’m so guilty of messing this up, of failing to hold myself accountable and failing to call out people around me. There’s no excuse, call outs shouldn’t be hesitated. Call outs are not toxic, failing to call people out perpetuates a toxic culture. Pride doesn’t exist without active anti racist work. Resharing this public service announcement courtesy of @noirnicheche. The only thing I will debunk is that emojis alone don’t count and the comments need to be in 4 or more words. Meaningful engagement is going to be key. We are going to have to try harder than before to stand out, support each other, and maintain relationships as creators. This is troubling for all of us who work hard on our craft and niche. Just think about it, if the algorithm is only showing your content to 10% of your followers then multiply your followers by 10% and that’s who actually going to see it. Content is no longer King, it’s going to be engagement. And that means working harder on it. Tips to further your engagement levels: 1) Comment back on people who comment on your posts so they’ll want to continue to engage with you. 2) Reciprocate any engagement you get. That means looking through who likes your posts and liking theirs. That means seeing who looks at your stories and take the time to look at theirs 3) Be authentic and relatable. Remember where you came from. If you’re a larger account help the little account out. Why? Because this new algorithm is really affecting their reach. Just be receptive to people and remember at some point you were a baby account starting out so don’t let your head get too big where you don’t want to shout out the little account who mentioned you in their story, or tagged you. It takes 5 seconds hit reshare and have their content circulated through your followers. Nows the time to finally share my theories on reach. I always believed reach and geographic region played a part. I believe it still does. The United States has the highest amount of instagram users in the world, second on that list is India. With that said our competition is high out here because it’s so saturated. Regions who are further down the list enjoy a greater reach because Instagram wants their content pushed out to other parts of the world. Again it’s a working theory, but I’ve seen some good reach from my followers and friends in different areas of the world but now with this algorithm change who knows now. The news that we all heard about Breonna Taylor left many disappointed, including myself. After hearing the verdict, I took yesterday to sit down and reflect on, “What’s next? What do we do now?” . The fear/ lack of safety and deaths of these innocent black individuals is not solely the result of racist cops and a racist system. Many of us are focused on that aspect of the matter (and it’s a damn good one to focus on) but we cannot end racism. We can, however, change the law. Racist cops and racist systems are only one part of a big, and a very problematic picture. . A racist cop, commiting an unjust act with laws in place that dont protect the corrupt behavior will result in justice. Reform is needed, especially now. . With some sadness at heart but a hefty dose of hope on our minds, all of the upcoming events for the kickstart of Rings of Neptune, as well as Rotate & Pluie/Noir events, will be postponed indefinitely while we join forces worldwide in battling COVID-19 through a much-needed effort of social distancing. Considering we have a pandemic on our hands, the cost of waiting is tremendously high. This is an exponential threat where every day counts. When we’re delaying a decision such as this by a single day, we’re not contributing to a few new cases maybe. There are probably hundreds or thousands of cases in our communities already. Lets not let these cases grow exponentially. Ironically, social distancing is the most altruistic thing we can do right now for our society. Today @voices4ldn @voices4_ and @voices4berlin have organised QUEER PROTEST AT HOME – a ‘digital protest’ to raise awareness of the issues faced by LGBTIQ+ people all over the world, that are being forgotten amidst the virus outbreak. Only this week did the UK government’s “EQUALITIES MINISTER” Liz Truss announce plans for legislation that would restrict healthcare for young trans people.
