I worry that they have been so brainwashed by magazines and editing apps to believe that all womxn need to look a certain way and that cellulite, even skin, stretch marks, fat and hip dips are not normal. I worry that they have been influenced by older generations to have such hatred and warped views in relation to womxn. I worry that they have never been educated on how to talk, interact and respect womxn. I worry for there future partners. I worry that they will treat them unkindly and in a disgusting manner. I worry for the people around them. That they will listen to the way they speak about womxn’s bodies and therefore be influenced to believe that this is normal and acceptable. I worry for there future children, the next generation whom I hope doesn’t struggle the way I did with body image. I worry for every womxn, young or old who reads these comments and feels utter disgust, worry, fear and shame. I know it feels like there minds can’t be changed but we will try. I worry because the majority of the comments left on my photos are from school aged children. A generation whom is so easily influenced and manipulated. (Fingers crossed that during #weightstigma Awareness Week this post doesn’t make people as angry and defensive as it did when we first posted 2.5 years ago!🤞🏼😅) It is hard to escape people glorifying weight loss with before/after posts, even in the world of body positivity & intuitive eating. These posts drive the dangerous myth that smaller is always better, healthier & happier. Sure, weight loss may have improved your life, but please dont co-opt #bodypositivity rhetoric to do it. If you are going to promote body acceptance, you cant *also* post and celebrate before-and-after weight loss pics. For the well-being and even the very lives of people, we HAVE to learn to separate our ideas about our worth & health from profit-driven ideals that thinner is always better (at any cost). ✖️Why? Because research shows many major health and fitness improvements DO NOT result in weight loss. And because research shows most women measure their health success in terms of weight loss, and when doesnt happen, they often give up or go to extremes that result in EDs, overexercise & shame. Read 1,000 of our other posts for more info. ✖️Actions speak louder than words and photos speak soooo much louder than captions. Yes, maybe she lost weight after kicking bad habits or breaking through shame to enjoy physical activity. Yay! But if the progress or transformation is one where her body became smaller, that post -at its core- is celebrating exactly what the image shows: weight loss. It is reinforcing the inescapable message that health equals thinness, and that body love leads to (and maybe even requires) body shrinking. Consider all the vulnerable people viewing these posts: 1 person dies EVERY HOUR as a result of an eating disorder in the US & *millions* lose out on actual health, happiness, and peace in the pursuit of the thin ideal each year. ✖️As activists, we must challenge the value system that tells us smaller is always better. now that the days are getting colder and autumn is approaching, chances are, depressive episodes are coming for me. winter is my biggest depression trigger ever, and swedish winter is hellish to me (and like, most of us living here). i decided to sit down a little while ago and write down all my personal depression signs so i can be more mindful of when it might happen. it seems - well, depressing, to plan for depressive episodes, but that’s life with bipolar disorder. you gotta stay on top of your moods. i am a huge advocate for understanding your mental illness and knowing your triggers, warning signs, and symptoms. when i start feeling depressed, my extrovert heart grows uninterested in social interaction, and when i find myself around others i just feel so incredibly dull, bored and tired of playing the character that is myself. my energy is low and my motivation is pretty much zero. dishes pile up, teeth get that fuzzy feeling from not being brushed enough, room starts looking like a pigsty, it’s a whole mess. but once i realize that i might be depressed, the easier it gets to start fighting back, because you have to fight that damn depression until your will to retain your normal self is stronger than depression’s grip of your psyche. knowing what your depression looks like when it starts creeping up is really important. these are my signs of an incoming depression, what are your signs ? • • • #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalhealthawareness #psynligt #nostigma #mentalhealthwarrior #recovery #art #digitalart #artistsoninstagram #comic #crazyheadcomics - @crazyheadcomics on Instagram
