Day 4 of #TSC music series: The Psychology of Musical Taste by @dan_the_biology_man and @silli_scientist. 🔊 sound on for #podbite . What factors make up our music preferences? As previously discussed in our ‘Music and Memories’ post, the act of listening to music goes far beyond the activation of the auditory cortex. When music is heard, it stimulates emotional responses through the brain’s limbic system, creating strong feelings of happiness, nostalgia, and even sadness (hey the deep cuts can be so therapeutic). In fact, most of the structures within this brain system play their own critical roles in converting these musical inputs and subsequent feelings into reinforceable connections that keep us coming back for more. The nucleus accumbens or NA delivers shots of dopamine, giving us the pleasure we feel from music listening. The amygdala picks up on these instances of heightened pleasure and attaches positive emotions to these reward hormone surges. Recent studies have found that the hippocampus of the limbic system has roles far beyond just learning and reinforcing memories, but also works in further reinforcing emotionally pleasurable listening sessions to increase our attachment to that music. In fact, neurogenesis, or the formation of new neurons within the hippocampus takes place as a result of the happiness and stress reduction experienced from the music. The more hippocampal cells created, the stronger the attachment to the music will be, and the more likely you are to come back for more. What’s more, the hippocampus has its own oxytocin receptors, which work to promote feelings of social bonding. These warm and fuzzy oxytocin-driven feelings of acceptance and belonging in the form of social bonds strengthen the connections we feel with the people that we care about. Your love for a certain music genre may have been introduced to you by parent or guardian during your childhood. The bond felt with this nurturing individual opened your mind to that type of music, and your positive relationship with that person coupled with subsequent listenings cemented those types of songs within your brain as something you find yourself continuously going back to. - @thescicommunity on Instagram

To Friends and Family of the Ironwood, When we lose a venue in Calgary, we lament its loss and wish we couldve done something to save a place that we cherish and value so dearly. We wish we couldve done SOMEthing to save it. The time is now to come to the aid of our beloved Ironwood. They have but a few months before they are forced to close the doors permanently. We all understand these are unprecedented times in our Arts community. We cannot afford to lose this venue that is so vital and crucial to our Citys music scene. More efforts will be done, rest assured, but for now we are throwing a fundraiser to show Pat, Amanda and the rest of the gang how much they mean to us and how much we love the Ironwood. I’d been crafting the songs for over a year, living with them for months, waiting to tease them out into the light. Dressing and undressing them to find the right cut, colour and cloth for them, hunting for the right flow and dance between word, note and rhythm. I realised that every time I set out to write a new collection of songs, I wonder if the spring will still drip generously with that mysterious water of inspiration, I try not to expect anything and to be happy if nothing comes. And yet happily, still they come, seemingly out of nowhere, song-creatures born and taking their own shape. The process is almost like midwifery, accompanying and facilitating the birth of the songs into the world and when they’re finished and the last touch has been laid down, it genuinely feels like I did nothing at all, as if these little songs had always been there waiting for the right time to bud and then bear fruit. And when the writing’s done, it‘s then time to record and to seek a whole other set of alchemical tools to capture the songs at their emotional peak. I co-produced the record with the amazing sound engineer and musician Fred Soulard and we recorded at the wonderful farmhouse and studio @studioblackboxfrance . I couldn’t have hoped for a better team, the incredible Malik and Karim Ziad as well as my brother in music, Simone Prattico and the fantastic @orianelacaille who joined us to play percussion on a few songs. On the record, there are also a few more surprises but I’ll keep those under wraps for now as we’re not done yet.. A recording of my live set at Dekmantel 2018 has suddenly appeared. Link in the usual spot I don’t do many live gigs, and definitely not on a stage of this size. My music generally isn’t very “bangin” either. When Dekmantel asked me to play live I wanted to bathe the main stage in a shimmering ocean of bleeps, bloops and reverb rather than the brutal pummeling of kicks you usually hear on a big stage. I built a miniature version of my studio and basically just did what I always do. No big ideas, no prep, jam hot, with all the mistakes and drum machines going off grid that every real live gig should have. This is a dire situation for live music. Since March, COVID-19 has shuttered venues across the US and they’ve been struggling to survive without revenue from shows as rent, insurance, and payroll payments continue to stack up. Though owners, operators, and industry workers banded together to form the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) and have been lobbying for Federal assistance since late March, Congress left for recess in August without a vote, leaving the entire industry without a lifeline.
