U.S. Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos — who’d won gold and bronze respectively in the 200-meter sprint — raising black-gloved fists during the medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City became one of the most iconic sports images of the 20th century. The protest had been something the two athletes carefully planned. As Smith and Carlos walked to the podium, they took off their shoes to protest poverty. They wore beads and a scarf to protest lynchings. And when the national anthem was played, they lowered their heads in defiance and raised their fists in a salute that rocked the world. Before the anthem started to play, Carlos recalled later that he thought about the symbols that had been chosen for that moment on the world stage. They knew it would become “a moment of truth.” And that by protesting they might lose everything. “I looked at my feet in my high socks and thought about all the black poverty I’d seen from Harlem to East Texas.” He had decided to unzip his Olympic jacket, in defiance of Olympic etiquette, but in support of “all the working-class people — black and white — in Harlem who had to struggle and work with their hands all day.” He had deliberately covered up the “USA” on his uniform with a black T-shirt to “reflect the shame I felt that my country was traveling at a snail’s pace toward something that should be obvious to all people of good will. Remembering Etta’s friend Muhammad Ali, who passed 4 years ago this week. Here he chats with Etta James at the piano at the Kinshasa Hotel in Zaire in September 1974. James and other Black musicians were in the country to perform at the Zaire 74 music festival. John Lewis is a hero of mine because of his civil rights activism and dedication to justice throughout his lifes work, both in the streets and in politics. Rep. Lewis worked as a grassroots organizer and was beaten by police while marching for racial equality, but also campaigned, was elected to congress, and served as a lawmaker for 40 years. John Lewis is a role model for using what I call the inside/outside strategy, which entailed working in whatever zone necessary, outside the system or inside, and using his powers as an organizer and communicator to make the nation better. There is no better example of dedication to justice and civic engagement than Rep. John Lewis. With the election approaching and the rise of voter suppression strategies utilized by the Republicans, I felt an image of John Lewis reminding people that the hard-fought progress on voting rights and equality must be maintained vigilantly when threatened, would be an important message to send before Nov. 3. I also wanted to symbolically thank John Lewis for all his service to humanity. When John Lewis made his cancer diagnosis public, my friend and photographer, Steve Schapiro suggested that we collaborate to honor him. I was thrilled by that idea and wrote a letter to John Lewis proposing the image of him. He gave the project his blessing but sadly passed away shortly before the art was completed. I know he was a humble person, but I hope hed be proud that his actions have given inspiration and fuel to me and millions of others. - To many, Drew Bundini Brown was the soul of the Ali camp, which he joined in 1963. He motivated the young boxer with phrases such as rumble, young man, rumble and Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. In my eyes he is the greatest hype-man of all time.
Today in Black History: American singer-songwriter Johnny Mathis was born on this day in 1935. Johnny was introduced to music at a young age by his father, who was also a musician. He was 13 years old when his father took him to a vocal coach, where he learned vocal scales and exercises, voice production, and classical and operatic skills. In 1954 he enrolled at San Fransisco State College and was known more for his athletic career than voice. However, while there a fellow student brought Johnny in to Black Hawk nightclub for a jam session where Helen Noga, co-owner of the club, first heard Johnny sing. She decided that she wanted to be his manager, and introduced him to George Avakian, head of Jazz A&R at Columbia Records, where Johnny recorded his first album in 1956. He was then placed under the producer Mitch Miller, who favored using Johnny’s voice to sing soft, romantic ballads. At his second session in 1956, Johnny recorded “Wonderful, Wonderful” and “Its Not For Me To Say,” two of his most popular all-time greatest hits. They were followed by “Chances Are” which became Johnny’s first #1 hit. Throughout his career, Johnny has sung for heads of state, remained on the top charts for years, appeared in both television and movies, been Grammy nominated and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
