Tonight’s painting in quickly fading soft smokey light on the Cathedral Rocks in Yosemite Valley. Although a couple minor lightning ignition fires have been smoldering in the Yosemite high country for a few weeks now, their smoke has been largely negligible. However, all the fires throughout CA started by that massive lightning storm a few nights ago are producing so much smoke that it is drifting hundreds of miles into Yosemite. 𝑨 𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒇 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝑹𝒂𝒏𝒊 𝑻𝒂𝒓𝒂 𝒃𝒂𝒊 Born to Hambirrao Mohite, the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army, Rani Tarabai was married off to Rajaram, younger son of Shivaji Maharaj, at the mere age of 8. After Aurangzeb captured & killed Sambhaji, Rajaram ascended the throne. Soon after, Rajaram & Tarabai were forced to leave from Raigad as the Mughals army laid siege to the capital. Rajaram was of frail health. It was due to Tarabai’s perseverance that they were able to hold off the Mughal siege for many years. In those difficult days, Rani Tarabai not only held the fort but also directed fight against Mughals in far off Maharashtra. She was aided by able generals like Santaaji Ghorpade & Dhanaji Jadhav. Rani Tarabai later faced a succession war in the hands Shahu, son of Sambhaji, who forced her to retreat and created the kingdom of Kolhapur. Gilberto Mendez, who was born in Floresville, Texas, was living with relatives in Monterrey, Mexico when their country entered the war. Gil was then drafted into the Mexican Army and served for one year. Because of a requirement to register for the U.S. draft, he returned to Texas and joined the Marines not long after. During early 1945, Mr. Mendez took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima and took part in some of the bloodiest combat on that island. NEW RELEASE!! The new @jr lithograph Tehachapi, Daytime, U.S.A., 2019 is now available on @socialanimals, link in bio. In October 2019, JR received permission to work in a maximum-security prison located in Tehachapi, California. JR and his team photographed incarcerated men, as well as former prisoners and prison staff, collecting a total of forty-eight portraits and stories. They all worked together to create a large-scale pasting on the courtyard. The wheatpasting of 338 strips of paper was completed in a few hours thanks to the help of all the participants in the project, and more incarcerated men and staff, working together with JR’s team. The final installation shot was done from a birds-eye view with a drone. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this lithograph will be donated to CAN ART CHANGE THE WORLD?, a non for profit organization that aims to use the power of art, culture and education to bring social awareness and social change around the world and in specific communities. Grief. It comes in waves, they say. It’s different for everyone, they say. It changes with time, they say. What they don’t say, is how perfectly functional you can be. Even weeks later. You may find yourself, laughing with a friend. You will find yourself, not thinking of it. You can find yourself, forgetting. You will find yourself, as someone said to me recently, “in gross acceptance”. Then, you are in the dairy aisle, and that song comes on, the one by that band that wasn’t around that long, the 90s female alt rock band, what was their name? And so I wake in the morning and I step outside and I take a deep breathe and I get real high and I scream from the top of my lungs…what’s going on??? And I said heyyyyyyyaheyyyyyeyeyayy what’s goin on??! And you remember, 4 Non Blondes. That lady with the problematic dreads and the Cat n the Hat hat. And you feel it rising in you, and your heart starts to race. What was it? Did you sing this song with dad? Is your body remembering something your brain does not? Did he love this song? He did always profess his adoration of “strong female powerhouse vocalists”. Was that what he called them? What was the name of that Eurythmics song he loved? And then you realize you’ve been standing in front of the half and half and creamer fridge door for ten minutes, pinching a carton of half and half with your right hand, tightly enough to have dented it. And someone is trying to get by you. And you drop the half and half in the basket, on top of the bananas, the thyme, the limes, the sourdough, and you run. You run out of the grocery store as it rises to the surface, beginning to spill, and you get to the car, his car, what was his car, and as you close the door and touch the steering wheel, your body, it breaks open. Then, as quickly as it came, you are backing out of your parking spot, a concerned woman watching, your eyes swollen almost shut, and you drive home. And you cook your mother dinner. I came to Australia with my mother and brother when we fled the Lebanese civil war. My dad joined us a couple of years later. It was the 70’s, I was 8 years old. Occasionally, I’m asked if I remember the war. The truth is you don’t ever forget the sound, smell or fear of war and you don’t forget leaving the people you love behind. I didn’t know it at the time but we were so incredibly lucky... to have landed in Sydney, a safe haven in an amazing country with its beauty, abundance, laid back people and seemingly endless possibility. I love Australia beyond words. It’s home. It’s the place my parents were able to, with dignity, rebuild a life. My husband and children are Australian, my friends, my colleagues and my business are all here. The beaches I adore are at our doorstep. My love for Lebanon too never fades and in many ways neither does the hope for its recovery, particularly for its resilient, joyful people. It’s undoubtedly a complex, often misunderstood place. My experience of it has been the generous and loving nature of the people and the beauty of old Beirut and it’s incredible mountains that slide into the Mediterranean. Today we’re stopping to remember those who lost their lives in Tuesday’s devastating explosion and give thought to those suffering more inexplicable loss at this time. If you can, please donate. In preparation for leaving LA at the end of this month, I’ve been taking Odessa to hike up to the Griffith Observatory all summer long. This has been wonderful not only because my nearly-five-year old can keep up with my pace and scale all the way up, but also because at the top she hurls herself onto the grass in sheer delight. “This,” she told me the first time she saw the domed observatory, “is the land of my dreams.” I had the same reaction when I moved to LA ten years ago, whether it was my second or third or fifth day here, hiking up in second-hand prada loafers like a fool. All I remember was feeling the same airy-yet-factual impulse. It has never ceased being a place where I commune with the better aspects of Los Angeles, the dreamlike parts: cinematic man-made elements that mingle with the green-and-purple-and-gold hillsides; the correlation between effort and reward and perspective change. LA represents a lot of things to a lot of people, and it has meant a lot of things for me. The quick altitude changes afforded by this city have helped me grow in more ways than one. Ive spent many years on sets, where I never stopped learning the craft, professionalism and ethic demanded by my work. Ive spent the hourly equivalent of many years in coffee bars- to me the beating heart of daytime culture in Los Angeles as in no other city. Ive watched the building of a group of extraordinary coffee shops that represented a dynamic vision and champion great people and quality product. I have found friends and collaborators who are luminous with their ideas and their way and the environments they create. I found my person and created a person and learned to cook. This has been the best ten years of my life. The sensory impressions of each memory, of all the friends and places I wont be able to drive and see after August, are a jumble of colors and feelings and voices and smells and tastes. Our path forward exists abundant with dreams, and of course, entirely covid-stalled. We are moving to western massachusetts for the next few months to be with family and lots of new hiking paths, and after that, we’ll, it’s less clear. - @natalietoren on Instagram

Sarahan originally served as the summer capital of the Bushahr kingdom. This captivating small village hosts the famous Bhimakali temple which is also a part of the sacred fifty one Shaktipeethas. Legend goes that after the incident of Daksha-yajna, the ear of Goddess Sati fell in this place. It was after this incident, that the place was worshipped as a Pithastan. The temple bears the image of a virgin goddess-Parvati. There are three other temples inside the main temple dedicated to Patal Bhairva Ji (Lankra Veer) - the guardian deity, Lord Raghunathji and Narsinghji. alternative legend states that when ‘asuras’ or demons attacked the Himalayas and tortured the saints, Lord Vishnu combined the strength of all the saints into a fire from which rose ‘Adishakti’ or Goddess Lakshmi. It is also believed that the Kinnaur district, of which Sarahan is the gateway, is actually the ‘Kailash’ where Lord Shiva resided. My favorite type with makeready underlay. Makeready underlay is the paper adhered under the piece of type to raise the printing surface. It is an easy way to help raise the type that is not picking up ink so that it can be printed on the press. Printers often used test prints as makeready. These small pieces of paper now serve as documents of how the type was used. This particular type was used to print materials for Varteks textile factory in Croatia, one of the factories whose workers are featured in my most recent body of work. #makeready #woodtype #diacriticmarks #varteks #printhistory - @vidasacic on Instagram

“I want to emphasise that I’m tired of the isolation of aesthetics. There has been an aestheticising going on, and it was very much part of the Conceptual Art movement...There was a whole move to aestheticise the environment. At the same time, there was this new concern with archeology and artefacts, and a growing awareness of the history of local places – preservation societies and museums blossomed all over the United States. Right along some of my work has had a functional aspect, like indicating sun cycles or astronomical alignments, and with the park I’m working on now in Washington D.C., I have to think about people sitting down and having enough room for baby carriages and so on. Model of our Valextra store in Chengdu showing an imposing solid wall of dark concrete that spans two stories. Narrow vertical and horizontal windows are carved into the thick wall to provide glimpses of the store within, while a deep set arched entrance with a curved glass door detailed in brass and curved green tile is positioned off centre. Upon entering the store, the customer is welcomed into a circular library space lined with a grid of walnut shelving. The shelving, which displays the Italian accessories brands merchandise, is backed by walnut baton screens that are suspended from the ceiling. Books will be open & available on Thursday before noon. A note on this time off: being a reader takes a tremendous lot of energy. I often wonder if it looks ‘glamorous’ to others or mysterious and wise - and it can be some of those things. But, what I do is work from the heart to heal each soul I read. Its more than just a tarot reading. It’s tough work. It’s deep work. There can be heavy themes. However, it is work that I absolutely love. And for every one of you glorious and brilliant souls I get to call a clients; I’m beyond thankful, grateful, lucky and honored to do this work and be here for you. This work found me and I moved towards it. I didn’t become a reader because it was on trend or cool. I didn’t become a reader when it WAS cool. I have always been this way. I don’t need to explain to you why I have taken time off because I know you care about me and my offerings. But I want to explain because I feel it needs to be heard. My mother said: are you sure you want to say no to people? And I replied, I have to say yes to me. This is BOUNDARY work and it has been a huge theme for many of us right now. Boundaries are about giving yourself what you need to be nourished and strong. To drink from your cup to feel full and complete; and that can come with a hard NO. It’s ok! We are such a yes, yes, yes society and where has it left us? Fighting, misaligned, lost, angry, sick, living beyond our means, drowning in debts, burnt out. This is the antithesis of my work. And if I’m going to teach it I need to live it. Rest. Stop. Relax. Heal. Go slow. It’s not a race. The people that need your healing and teachings will find you. So. I won’t be back to full speed - please understand. I will have some appointments available. And know, that this is so I can give you the greatest quality and attention. I am here for YOU. Il #ForodiNerva era in realtà la monumentalizzazione del tratto finale dell’Argileto, antico percorso viario che metteva in collegamento il popolare e popoloso quartiere della Suburra (nell’area dell’attuale Rione Monti) con il Foro Romano; per questo motivo era anche detto “Transitorio”. A causa del poco spazio disponibile fu realizzata una piazza lunga e stretta, delimitata da un alto muro in blocchi di tufo da cui sporgevano colonne aggettanti, sormontate da un attico decorato con Storie di Divinità e personificazioni dei popoli che abitavano l’Impero Romano. L’Argileto entrava nella piazza attraverso un arco monumentale che si apriva sul lato breve orientale, verso la Suburra, chiamato nel Medioevo “Arco di Noè”, probabile corruzione di “Arcus Nervae” (Arco di Nerva). Accanto all’Arco si trovava il Tempio dedicato a Minerva, divinità cara a Domiziano, che fu demolito tra la fine del XVI e l’inizio del XVII secolo per recuperare materiale da costruzione. Here’s another #throwback Before I worked in locations, I was a Special FX dude. Old school non-digital crap. BTS shots from FOR THE BOYS. Shot: 1990. Released: 1991. The Vietnam scenes in the hills near Santa Clarita CA. Location and scenes here were about James Caans & @bettemidler ‘s characters popping in on her sons camp - against her wishes. For FX it was about the attack of the base while they were there and her son (Mark Rydells son Chris) running from a post back to her. Fire pans, smoke, and big-ass water bottles of gas wrapped in det cord. Big fun. I operated a fan under a Huey for a process shot as it was parked on the platform. Curious what @fred_north would have done. I think we shot 1st unit for about a week after about 2 weeks of prep including snowing in Korea sets in the canyon below this area. I think we shot two weeks of 2nd unit. Photos are a mix of both. In the big explosion shot, Director Mark Rydell is ducking for cover. I printed and framed these two shots for him and presented to him at the wrap party - which was held at a palatial mansion off Mullholland. Memorable gig.
