Did you know that August 9 is International Day of the World’s Indigenous People’s? At Kakenya’s Dream, we’re celebrating our community’s rich Maasai culture. Over 95% of our students at our boarding schools are #Maasai, an indigenous group native to Kenya and Tanzania. Stay tuned next week for opportunities to learn more about Maasai culture and customs, how we’ve woven them into the arts curriculum at our schools, and how you can support these important programs for the next academic year! 🎭 - @kakenyasdream on Instagram

Meet Mashe Kaimana. Mashe is a highly skilled basket weaver in the Village of Xakao. She belongs to a basket making cooperative with other women; baskets are a part of farming life in the Okavango Panhandle. They are used traditionally for storing seeds, for carrying goods, and for winnowing grain after it has been pounded. Weavers use palm fibers and source their dyes from plant roots, bark, and sometimes mauve-hued fungus found in sorghum husks. Each basket requires intricate weaving and can take weeks to complete. The patterns are either abstract or symbolic of the local environment and wildlife. As an elephant economy emerges in the Panhandle, perhaps more and more baskets will begin to reflect coexistence between people and elephants 🇧🇼🐘 📷: A. Amidst the violence that is gripping Nigeria, the country’s Christians are being targeted by the terrorist group Boko Haram while the rest of the world is largely ignoring the issue. Christians are being singled out for elimination by Boko Haram and Fulani tribesmen. So far in 2020, approximately 1,200 have been killed. In the last five years, the number has reached over 12,000. Last month, five international aid workers were killed by terrorists from the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP), more commonly known as Boko Haram. A video of the killings was released by the Islamist group as a warning to “all those being used by infidels to convert Muslims to Christianity.” While the world has been aware of these atrocities, not much has been done about it. Back in 2010, the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court opened an investigation into the situation in Nigeria. He looked specifically at the brutalities conducted by Boko Haram. ---- Read the full story on SOFREP.com #military #navy #army #militarynews #unitedstates #america #SOF #specialops #specops #loadoutroom #airforce #spaceforce #usa #usarmy #usaf #militarylife #armedforces #operator #news #SOFREP #TeamRoom #duty #activeduty #patriots #marines #usmc #salutetoservice - @sofrep.official on Instagram
Leopards can be tricky to spot! With incredibly effective camouflage and a preference for hunting at night, leopards are usually the most difficult of safari animals to see in the wild. One of our favourite places to spot leopard has to be in the South Luangwa in the east of Zambia. This national park combines pristine dense habitat with reliable water sources to make the perfect balance for a remote wildlife hotspot. It’s also known as the Valley of the Leopard – an appropriate reference to its large concentration of elusive, spotted big cats. Although we can never guarantee a specific wildlife sighting, we’ve yet to have an experience beaten by the South Luangwa when it comes to sighting leopard. It is believed that there’s one leopard for every two square kilometres, so if you head out on a night drive – luckily camps in the South Luangwa offer game drives after dark – you are bound to come across evidence that you are indeed in leopard country. #leopard #leopards #bigcats #bigfive #cats #southluangwa #zambia #wildlife #wildlifespotting #gamedrives #yellowzebrasafaris #elusivewildlife #safari #africa #africasafari - @yellowzebrasafaris on Instagram

“Today we are faced with a challenge that calls for a shift in our thinking, so that humanity stops threatening its life-support system. ⠀ ⠀ We are called to assist the Earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own – indeed, to embrace the whole creation in all its diversity, beauty and wonder ...⠀ ⠀ In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other.⠀ ⠀ That time is now.”⠀ ⠀ This is what Wangari Maathai said when she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her Green Belt movement, which has to date planted over 51 million trees and improved the lives of countless women.⠀ ⠀ Today, on the anniversary of her death in 2011, we remember Wangari Maathai, a pioneer and fearless activist. ⠀ ⠀ Her words are just as relevant today, as is her call for us all to take action, however ‘little’ those actions may seem. - @agrowingculture on Instagram
