No Less Worthy was commissioned by Aboriginal History WA and draws on recollections of descendants to delve into the lives of volunteers and the suffering they experienced prior to enlisting and upon returning home. Working out today I got thinking about America. What an idea. To me, the flag symbolizes the best version of myself, what I hope I’m working towards. Because I think the soul of America is tolerant but tenacious, loyal but wary, tough loving but tender. So I won’t give up on reaching that best version of myself. And I won’t give up on America. Things may get worse in this country in the next little while, and we’re as divided as ever. But I’m hopeful that we can put ourselves in each other’s shoes and gain some perspective. My experience says both sides want the same thing but disagree on the route there. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I firmly believe, even as an immigrant, that I’m American first. La primera, es que la morfología territorial de la comuna, respondió en primera instancia, a un proceso modernizador del capitalismo, en el que prevaleció el criterio económico sobre el social. Por su parte, el modelo de desarrollo económico hacia adentro, produjo los mayores avances arquitectónicos y de calidad de vida, para los vecinos de nuestra comuna, contrario a lo que ocurrió en dictadura, donde se acrecentó la desigualdad y se repitió el patrón que precarizó y segregó a las comunidades más pobres, perpetuando así las distancias con los grupos históricamente más privilegiados. A modo de reflexión final, cabe destacar que la conciencia de esta brecha, genera un componente subjetivo de desigualdad, que lleva a percibirla como una permanente afrenta a la dignidad personal de los que la experimentan. We may never know whether the President of the United States actually used derogatory words to describe individuals who chose to defend our nation. What matters is our response as a society to the issue of respect for military service. As a nation, we honor American veterans of every generation and offer them our deepest respect and gratitude. As Americans, we may not always agree with the actions of our military. However, after the Vietnam War, our society rightfully reassessed our treatment of returning veterans. Americans of all social, political, racial, and cultural backgrounds have since found common ground in our respect for the individual sacrifices of our veterans. It stands as one of the few mores that unites us as Americans and as human beings. The nonprofit Go For Broke National Education Center preserves the legacy of the Americans of Japanese ancestry who fought in World War II to uphold America’s Promise — in our nation, no one is to be judged by the color of their skin, the nation of their origin, or the God whom they choose to worship. The German strategy for Operation Barbarossa (June 22 1941) . Since 1940, the Germans had already been planning an Axis invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, codenamed Operation Barbarossa (see previous post). Stalin had been warned several times for an Axis invasion and the Soviets did make significant preparations, but Stalin desided not to run the risk of provoking the führer by stationing too many troops and tanks on the westfront. . Meanwhile the Germans had secretly been moving around 3,8 million Axis soldiers and several thousands of tanks and aircraft to the eastern front in preparation for the invasion. The führer and his generals had planned the following invasion strategy. The Axis army, which consisted of around 150 divisions, would be split up into three Army groups: Army Group North, Army Group Center and Army Group South. Army Group North would advance into Northern Russia and try to capture or destroy the city of Leningrad. Army Group Center, which had the most armoured divisions and air support, would advance from Poland into the western center of Russia and advance towards Moscow. Army Group South would march through Ukraine from the south, capturing Kiev and then move eastward into Russia to take the oil-rich Caucasus area near Stalingrad. . The German forces in conquered Soviet areas (mostly Waffen-SS and Einsatzgruppen Units) had to control the areas, preventing any partisan activities and execute captured Soviet political commissars and Jews. The Germans expected a rapid advance into Soviet territory without many obstacles, after which the Red Army would collapse. . What was their biggest mistake during the invasion of the Soviet Union? The Battle of Kiev (Aug. 23 – Sept. 26 1941) . The Battle of Kiev was fought between the German Army Group South and the Red Army during Operation Barbarossa. While the German Army Group Central had successfully captured the cities of Minsk and Smolensk, Army Group South faced more resistance in their advance. On the 3th of August, the führer had given the controversial order to Heinz Guderian that Army Group Central’s 2nd Panzer army and 2nd Infantry army had to stop their advance onto Moscow and support Army Group South in their encirclement of Kiev. . The battle of Kiev started on the 23th of August. The strategy was again to trap the Soviet’s Army groups in a large pocket. The Germans were in the advantage because they had complete air superiority and the Red Army had lost a significant amount of tanks in previous battles. By the 1st of September, the circle started to shape itself around the Red Army troops and the order was given by the Soviet’s High Command that every army group had to hold their line. By September 13, the 9th and the 3th panzer division made contact with each other east of Kiev, completing the encirclement. Inside the pocket there was no communication and mass confusion among the Red Army soldiers. This was made even worse when the Germans started trapping every encircled group into their own small pocket. The Red Army soldiers were under constant artillery, tank and air bombardment. On the 19th of September, the city of Kiev surrenders and seven days later all the trapped army groups surrendered to the Germans. Elements of the British 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division fighting in Kleve, Germany on February 10, 1945. This was one of two towns (the other being Goch) that the Germans fortified behind the West Wall in the Reichswald Forest. Notice the Valentine Mk 1 Archer tank destroyer at the beginning of the film. The forward-most defensive German unit in the town, the 84th Infantry Division, was essentially wiped out in the fighting, and the British were able to secure Kleve on February 11th. From there the 43rd Division proceeded to advance 4½ miles to the high ground which overlooked Goch. Over the next few weeks the British experienced more heavy fighting as they worked to secure Goch, notably between February 18th and 21st. - @theworldwars on Instagram
