In the winter months when the grass quits growing the cattle’s diet consists mainly of hay and a lot of it! My Dad and I put up around 1,000 bales of hay each summer. This means a lot of hours on the tractor, but it is one of my favorite things to do. The hay has to be cut, cured, raked, baled and hauled in. A few months ago, I put together a proposal for a Covid-safe public art installation in the City of Glendale. The concept was a departure from my day-to-day studio-based practice, but it drew on so many parts of my lived experience: my time teaching adolescents and young adults how to use art to process and recover from trauma, my deep history in experimental music, my existing sculpture practice, even my time as an attorney interviewing witnesses and gathering testimony. More importantly, it felt like the work I needed to make right now, in the midst of so much uncertainty, isolation, and suffering. Several public hearings, dozens of interviews, and many weeks of sound editing later, I am grateful and humbled to be able to share that we broke ground on the installation of this project in Glendale Central Park this week. We have a big tiller we can use off the back of the tractor, but typically there is another more important implement being used (i.e. backhoe attachment for digging in waterline). Letzten Samstag haben wir es endlich geschafft einen Versuch im Grünland anzulegen. Mit den beiden Maschinen zur Grünlandsanierung haben wir unter verschiedenen Bedingungen das Grünland nachgesät. Der Wiesenengel (die pinke Maschine) ist der Spezialist für Wildschweinschäden und die grobe Sanierung. Auch eine umbruchlose (ohne die Wiese zu pflügen) Grünlanderneuerung ist damit möglich. Der Striegel mit Walze ist ehr für die Pflege geeignet, damit können wir lückige Bestände nachsäen oder auch ungewünschte Gräser (v.a. die gemeine Rispe) auskämmen. Was bei dem Vergleich raus kommt werden wir sehen. Ich bin schon gespannt was die Erkenntnisse sein werden. Wir bieten zusammen mit einem Geschäftspartner beide Dienstleistungen auch für andere Landwirte an. Wir finden, die Grünlandpflege und -Sanierung wird in Zukunft immer wichtiger, denn die Wetterextreme setzen auch dem Grünland zu. A not so happy post: This is Wayd Gorby. I’m the guy that had the idea to plant sunflowers in our field to brighten our days for a few weeks. I had no intention of this becoming a “destination” open to the public. But, it just so happens that’s what we’ve become. I’m OK with it. And even though it’s a TON of work and expense, the light that this field shines has become something quite incredible. And we’re happy that it’s brought so much joy and a temporary escape for so many. But tonight, I’m a little disappointed. In fact, I’m pissed off. Somebody decided to drive in and tear up our yard and driveway while we were out this evening. Don’t know what would possess someone to do such a thing. And frankly don’t care. Just want whoever did this to know one thing. Even though it seems to be the popular thing to destroy things for fun, or even for a cause. And even though this will cost me some money and a lot of time and work. The light STILL shines here. This little sunflower field, as long as I’m alive and able to do it, will signify what should be. It will stand as a beacon of joy, happiness, and hope. A symbol of the good in all of us, even the person that decided to damage it tonight. I’m not going to tell you I’m happy about it. And I’m not going to tell you everything is fine. But I am going to tell you that you may have damaged our little fields looks, but you’ve done nothing to it’s spirit and I hope whatever you were trying to achieve by doing this was a success. In den letzten Wochen reift er irgendwie ganz schön. Freitag hat er von sich aus den Tisch für eine Freundin und mich gedeckt, er ist bei vielen Sachen viel dankbarer und sagt es dann auch, er entschuldigt sich von alleine, wenn er beim bettfertig machen getrödelt hat... Und sagt mir noch öfter als sonst, dass er mich liebt 😍 Ich bin sooo stolz auf ihn. Bei irgendeiner Mama mit bald-Schulkind hatte ich das letztens auch gelesen. Ob unsere Kinder wirklich größer werden oder spüren sie diese besondere Zeit momentan, so zwischen nicht mehr wirklich Kindergartenkind sein, aber immer noch kein Schulkind sein? Fall display installed this week with mums, cabbage, and kale. Grass seed starting to pop from a recent slice seeding as well as aeration and seeding, this client was having issues with proper watering so they switched over to the @rachioco controller which allowed us to help maintain the proper watering for the new seed.
