Trilha sonora para um domingo cinzento. Miles, Kind of Blue, lançado em agosto de 1959. O time: Julian Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, James Cobb, Wynton Kelly e Bill Evans. - @jimijoe007 on Instagram

After the hundreds of years of hardship and fighting for equality and respect, i feel that all of the progess we’ve made is halted by the mass ignorance of people and their inability to show compassion and love for each other regardless of their background and upbringing. It really is distressing as we do live in a society that is well educated enough to continue on the progress that millions have worked so hard to achieve already. We all NEED to vocalise the injustice that is happening across the world and come together to fight this and if you wish to look the other way and pretend that you dont have a responsibility to play in helping to fight the system who have opressed us for so long than at the very least begin to educate yourself on the murder and lies that the governments worldwide have tried to hide over the years. #justiceforgeorgefloyd #policebrutality #blackpower - @gish.gish.gish on Instagram

a part of me regrets not coming to jimmy baldwin’s work earlier. but the other part of me is thankful I came to know his words when I did. I did not grow up with a father figure, just the stories of one. which lead me to a life of searching. not always consciously. my hardheadedness often made me feel like I never needed one, but in very deep moments of vulnerability, that’s all I wanted. baldwin’s words put into clear focus what I had been trying to articulate about my own experience. boyhood. manhood. I devoured his words. this was an incredible gift, a ray of light breaking through the dark, dark clouds. i encourage all of you to read, watch, listen to baldwin as soon as, or as early in your life as possible. his wisdom is a fierce, cutting reminder that we have been here before. - @clublonely on Instagram

Happy Birthday #marlenashaw!! 20 years ago I was asked to join Marlena’s UK band and to do some support slots with my band including @misstuffers kicking off with The Jazz Rooms run by @russdewbury in Brighton. We got friendly and after a few tours I got up the courage to ask to record an idea myself and @phlashington had about “The Squire for Hire” loosely based around a gigging jazz musician. I gave Marlena a cassette of our demo then I met her in her hotel room and she did her (now iconic) spoken word delivery for me before I drove her to West London to record it. It was a one take! I don’t think any of us knew how big that tune would become but from then we were friends - real good friends. We did a lot of tours including 3 dates in NZ with @nzsymphonyorchestra where we played Squire For Hire LIVE with the 100 piece orchestra and my band. Damn that was FUN!! Marlena showed me more about music and life than probably any other musician. To have shared the stage with her so many times and to have been in her company and just enjoyed hanging - well it’s hard to describe what a huge influence she’s been in my life. Love you the one and only Marlena and have a great B’Day! I hope we play again one day...Xx - @nathan.haines on Instagram

This week the American Library Association celebrates National Library Week. Today we focus on the work of bookmobiles in ensuring equitable library access. What if I told you that it would be the African American Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, that would help to pioneer the contemporary bookmobile concept in their effort to ensure library services to African Americans in the Jim Crow South! In 1937 Black women in DST’s NY chapter pooled money, purchased a bus, outfitted it with books and brought it to communities in GA and SC. Later an article would be written “Deltas Bookmobile to reach two million.” In 1951, ALA presented its Letter Award to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for its extraordinary Bookmobile program in the South. See article http://www.ala.org/advocacy/intersections-sorority-literacy-jim-crow-and-bookmobiles-legacy-service. “The right to vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool or instrument in a democratic society. We must use it.” Confrontation on the Bridge (1975), Jacob Lawrence (African-American, 1917-2000) DESCRIPTION When Jacob Lawrence was commissioned to execute a print to celebrate the United States bicentennial in 1976, he illustrated the March 7, 1965, march by unarmed protesters objecting to the denial of African Americans right to vote. The march began in Selma, Alabama, but before the 600 protesters could reach the state capital in Montgomery, law enforcement officials attacked them with clubs and tear gas as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge. John Lewis was the first to be beaten in the clash with state troopers, who cracked his skull with a billy club on the date that became known as “Bloody Sunday.” Lawrence symbolized the malicious and brutal attack by including the vicious dog at the left edge of the scene. Two days later, with court protection, Martin Luther King Jr. led 25,000 marchers to Montgomery. Outraged by the barbarity of the civil rights struggle, the U.S. Congress passed and President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act later that year. Lawrences strong colors and compact composition relay the intensity and injustice of the violence inflicted on the peaceful protesters. #clevelandvotes #clevotes #govote #rockthevote #rockthevote2020 #bidenharris2020 #clevelandmuseumofart #johnlewis #selma #voterrights - @dmcphcle on Instagram

It turned out that I and my friend Barrett were welcome to come backstage as well. We were escorted into an empty room about an hour before the show, and in a minute or so, Bruce pops in the door, enthusiastically grabs each of us in a handshake, makes sure he knows our names, and we start yakking away. Dana is the alpha male here because he controls what the station plays, but Bruce makes sure to include Barrett and me in the conversation, which lasted 20 minutes or more. He couldnt have been nicer or more welcoming. We were all kind of blown away to be honest. Even Dana who had met dozens of major players in the music biz! Oh by the way, the show was spectacular! His shows were not yet the marathon 4 hour spectacles they morphed into later, but he played about 25 songs. Critics have said this tour was the impetus for him reaching major stardom. Atlanta and Music cannot be mentioned in the same sentence without also mentioning the legendary Georgia-Bred, Ray Charles. The 17-time grammy award winning singer-songwriter crossed over into virtually every genre. From starting his own Recording, Publishing & Management company, to owning his Masters in the 60’s and setting the tone for Black ownership, his legacy is astounding. His rendition of “Georgia on my mind” was made the official state song of Georgia. THE WINDRUSH GENERATION Today marks when The Empire Windrush arrived into Tilbury Docks, bringing with it just over 1000 West Indians from the Caribbean Islands, on June 22nd 1948. Britain called upon it’s Commonwealth territories to fill it’s severe lack of labour force after World War 2 to help rebuild the country; many being ex-servicemen who fought for Britain in the war. The British Government promised citizenship, prosperity and employment for those who came, this saw an estimated half a million West Indians between 1948 and 1970 including my own grandparents and parents, travel 8000 miles from the Caribbean to begin a new life here in the UK. Despite suffering unimaginable racism across the country they persevered and helped to rebuild a country that has BARELY recognised their contribution. Fast forward to 2019 the anniversary was bittersweet, as around the same time it became clear that the Windrush generation were rewarded for their essential contributions by them finding themselves on the wrong side of immigration laws thanks to Theresa May’s “hostile environment policies”. Many were detained, denied legal rights and illegally deported. TILL THIS DAY no apology has been received from the home office and little to no justice served. I am a proud descendant of this generation and I stand on your shoulders. Thank you for all that you did despite the discrimination you endured. It is my duty to fight until the day that racial equality, truth and justice is known for us all...I owe you this much 🖤👊🏾✊🏾🇧🇧🇬🇾🇬🇧 • • • • • • #repost @nathalieemmanuel 🙏🏾 #TheWindrushGeneration #TheWindrushScandal #BlackBritishHistory #EternallyGrateful - @hurcs on Instagram

Today in Black History: Otis Redding, one of the greatest American soul singers/songwriters, was born on this day in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. Redding was raised in Macon, where he started singing at a young age and was influenced by musicians such as Sam Cooke and Little Richard. His breakthrough into soul music came when Redding drove to Memphis, Tennessee with Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers for a recording session at Stax Records in 1962. The Stax co-owner Jim Stewart allowed Otis to cut a few songs at the end of the recording session. The result was “These Arms of Mine”, which released that same year and launched his career. This was the first of many hit singles (including “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Respect,” and “Try a Little Tenderness) and his open-throated, emotional style and powerful singing became the measure of the decades great soul artists. In December of 1967, Redding and four members of his band were killed when their chartered plane crashed into a Wisconsin lake. He was only 26 years old. Shortly before his death, he recorded his number one hit single “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” which shot to the top of the charts. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy awards in 1999. 📷: KALW Local Public Radio #todayinblackhistory #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #sallieellisdavishouse #otisredding - @sallieedavis on Instagram

- @aureavie on Instagram

Charlie Parker stuck out in my mind. Parker didnt perform like his black predecessors, he typified rebellion, what some people might call militancy. Here was a black artist who played and didnt exhibit any aspects of the happy darkie playing. Black people, entertainers (before the early 50s) were supposed to entertain more than play. They had to sing and dance. But Parker forced people to listen. They had to say, `Wow, this is great music, and he isnt smiling and singing and dancing. Its time to stop and think And make sure that 2020 is a year of peace in Mali. - Il est temps que nous travaillons main dans la main Aux fins que 2020 soit une année définitive de paix au Mali. Deep and wicked West African Disco ultra rarity (Recorded in Lagos, 1981) by the band of Cameroonian multi-instrumentalist, Francis Mbilong.. Dont sleep on this winner! Born in 1952 in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Francis Mbilong, would go on to lead an exciting and diverse career all across West-Africa. From a very young age at the behest of a family friend, Francis studied harmonium, clarinet, saxophone, and many other instruments. He would eventually funnel most of his talent into the guitar, on which he would write the majority of his body of work. After releasing several recordings under myriad band names during the 1970s, Francis went on to form his longest-standing outfit, Revelation; a name under which he has released recordings as recently as 2020. At the time of the release of Love Affairs by Revelation in 1981, Mbilong would spend most of his time gigging in a club called Phoenicia in Lagos, Nigeria. He preferred the ambiance of a luxury night club to the regular clubs in Lagos, and gigging there afforded him the privilege of sitting in on jam sessions when acts like Kool & The Gang, or Bob Marley were in town. Altogether his career was storied and multitudinous, and was made possible by his immense talent as a musician. Love Affairs contains within its seven tracks, a heady, deep, soulful approach to boogie that is seldom tapped by other recordings of its time. Mbilongs careful and disciplined approach to songwriting sets this album in a tier elevated from the usual four-on-the-floor disco routine. Each song is more engaging than the last, and each pocket respectively deeper. Revelation serves a familiar live-off-the-floor energy with the precision and soulfulness of a group of musicians who are as comfortable with each other as they are talented. The infectious rhythms on this album are the stuff of earworms and dancing is mandatory. - @tambourine_party on Instagram

I remember as a kid I saw Little Richard on TV. He was so amazing I did an impression of him at school the classroom just because. I was always the quiet kid but he gave me confidence to sing and dance for people. I will never get my first praise and I never forget that it was because of him that inspired me. Thank you Little Richard for all the music you created that influenced generations of music without them knowing. RIP 🙏🏾 - @mrjbrownmusic on Instagram

- The cover of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrongs 1956 duet album looks like the friendly older couple who lives down the street, even though they are two of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

“Charley Parker, the great sax star who comes out to the Sunset next Sunday, who is the first outstanding musician of the west to break from the so-called “Western” Rhythm style to create something entirely new. That’s exactly what has happened in the case of bebop, of which Parker is one of the most outstanding exponents. Bebop is a music form that has absolutely no counterpart and Parker is its master performer...” Come out friends and see Charlie Parker at the Sunset Terrace, 873-875 Indiana Ave. See Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper, January 3, 1948. https://newspapers.library.in.gov/cgi-bin/indiana?a=d&d=INR19480103-01.1.2&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN------- (Or you might catch Cab Calloway, Count Basie Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington and B.B.
