So you have your newborn safe at home and ohh aren’t they just squishy little balls of perfection. You may be thinking you struck luck in the sleep department and then BAM, your sleepy newborn wakes, starts screaming hours on end and your left wondering where did our content baby go??? This usually occurs around week 3, your baby’s first real growth spurt! All of a sudden their feeding patterns will change, their sleep will be all over the shop and they will want to be held constantly. Google will be whipped out, Instagram will be scrolled through hundreds of times as you try to find the solution to getting your content bub back. This is all part of healthy newborn behaviour and development. So from mama to mama and paed nurse to mama here are some tips no solutions. Because solutions are pointless at this age: • Stop putting any expectations on yourself and your baby. Remember your both learning and this shit takes time. • Allow your baby the closeness they are wanting, don’t try the self-settling, they’re not ready. Hold them close try baby wearing & skin to skin. • Cluster feeding is so important but exhausting for you. They are simply increasing the supply to meet their growing demands. Allow them to feed when they need, never put them on a feeding schedule. This will settle over a few days to a week. • Rest, I know, I know shut up Vanessa and stop telling me to sleep when the baby sleeps. I’m not telling you to sleep, but you need your rest. • Get some fresh air and sunshine, this always helps a foggy brain and exhausted body. • When they won’t stop crying? Darken the room, go skin to skin, put some nice music on, a relaxing diffuser blend (not too strong) and mama breathe. When your relaxed baby will relax. If you’re on your own – put bubs in the basinett and walk away, take a 5 minute break, regain your calm and come back. And yes it is ok to cry yourself. Like I said this shit is exhausting and no one ever tells you just how tiring and demanding newborns are. In the frosty chill of early 2020, we visited Louis Fratino at the Bushwick studio he shares with his partner, designer Thomas Barger. The open plan was split by the couple’s starkly different styles, the colorful romance of Fratino’s paintings both in conversation and at odds with the puffy and softly spiny architecture of Barger’s furniture. POSTPARTUM IS A PERIOD OF GRIEF. . Its an emotion many never associate with that time. Youre supposed to just be happy, you just had a baby, you just became a mother, you just created life! While this is all true, it is also true that postpartum is a time of loss. The loss of your old body, the loss of your old life, the loss of your old independence, the loss of freedom, the loss of identity, the loss of self. It is a period where you lose sleep, you lose fluids, you lose patience and it you can feel like youre losing your mind! Its weird, I didnt even like my old body, but I was sad when I lost it. I thought at least that body didnt leak. At least that body didnt ache. At least that tummy wasnt stretched. At least that body wasnt broken. As much as I loathed my body before babies, I despised it afterwards. I didnt love my old body but at least I knew it. It was familiar, it was mine, and pregnancy had taken it away from me. Im not telling you to just be happy in this new body. You cant just be happy in this new body, youre still grieving the loss of your old body. And grief takes time. Time doesnt decipitate grief, you just learn how to live with it. With time, it can go from the forefront of your mind to the background; Always there but yet not always defining. Loving your body doesnt mean loving all that it is. And moving on from grief doesnt mean forgetting; it means accepting. Acceptance takes time. Dont feel guilty for grieving but know that time does heal. Dont give up on this new body yet. 07.02.2020 Dia que a Maria Liz escolheu para nascer! Relato do meu Parto: Ser Mãe de primeira viagem é tudo novo, tudo mais! Na segunda gestação não é diferente, pois quem tem mais de um filho sabe que cada gestação é diferente uma da outra! Assim foi a minha gestação, totalmente diferente da primeira! É como se fosse a primeira gestação porém com experiência. Quando engravidei, desde então meu primeiro pedido à Deus foi que meu parto fosse mais rápido! Assim foi, minhas preces foram escutadas🙏🏻 Na manhã do dia 06.02 por volta de 09:30 da manhã estava deitada, ao levantar senti o líquido escorrendo entre as pernas, sim um pouco da bolsa que estourou, porém estava sem dor e não tinha sangue! Por isso não fui para o hospital de imediato! Umas 11hrs começaram as contrações bem leve e espaçosas, comecei a observar o tempo de uma para outra e o quanto que aumentava a dor! Por volta das 22hrs as contrações estavam mais próximas uma da outra e as dores bem fortes, então fui para o hospital! O dia todo não tive sangramento nem perda de líquido ou seja a Maria Liz não estava sofrendo! Ao chegar no hospital dei entrada ja era mais de 23hrs e Quando foi 15 para 01hr da madrugada do dia 07.02 a Maria Liz nasceu🙏🏻 Graças à Deus, com minha mãe direto ao meu lado me dando forças, e todos que me colocaram em suas orações, consegui mais uma vez ter a Maria Liz de Parto Normal🙏🏻 Muita emoção, dores... “I didn’t know that breasts were for breastfeeding until I was 36 weeks pregnant. I used to think of myself as silly for that fact - but how on Earth can I blame me for not being taught / shown something. It wasn’t me that was the problem here- it was the fact that breastfeeding was so taboo and so hidden that I’d never really seen it in a positive light. It was society. I was so so excited buying all the different bottles to try and researching all the formulas - without even ever having had the chance to consider breastfeeding. I don’t know if I’ve ever posted many photos of my girl and I on this page, so here we are! We are expecting #2 on October 4th and I am around 28 weeks in this photo, currently sitting at 32 weeks right now! I’ve been shooting almost every day lately which is awesome and I can never complain about keeping busy, especially prior to going into round 2 of being postpartum with a newborn in fall and winter months. As a self-employed person, I don’t get to access EI mat leave so it’s hustle time leading up to and usually back to biz shortly after as well! HOW MUCH NIPPLE & BREAST PAIN IS NORMAL? This is the million-dollar question. Some moms are told that a little nipple pain is normal in the early days of breastfeeding – others are told it’s never normal and is a problem. The answer lies somewhere in the middle, though anytime you experience pain that is bothering you, especially if it is coupled with other breastfeeding concerns, you should feel free to address these with a lactation consultant or breastfeeding helper. In general, the rule of thumb is that if you feel a little tugging or pulling at the beginning of a breastfeeding session, but the pain seems to go away soon after your baby starts suckling, it’s probably nothing to be concerned about. However, if the pain is strong, long-lasting — and if it causes any nipple damage, it’s something that should be addressed as soon as possible. Bleeding nipples, cracked nipples, pinched nipples, and nipples that look like a tube of lipstick after they come out of your baby’s mouth could indicate a latching issue, and usually require some hands-on help or latching adjustments to fix. Keep in mind, though, that these sorts of problems are common and are almost always fixable with a little care and assistance. I came across an Albert Einstein quote a few weeks ago on a tea bag that read “Imagination is more important than knowledge” and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so connected to a bag of tea in my life. I literally could not stop thinking about the quote after reading it. The perfect teaching for now and for always — especially as so many of us continue to spend time indoors or on our own. Making the time to daydream and appreciate the wonders of my imagination has been my greatest asset in 2020. Spending time with my two year old nephew, Kainoa, has been the second greatest. He loooves hearing stories and asking questions to learn further information + details. It’s been eye opening for me to take an “everyday” situation such as our dog Rocky going missing for the night, or me forgetting to put the lid on the vitamix blender at breakfast time, and turning it into an elaborate and exciting story with different characters, backdrops and plot twists. The whole story telling process serves as a personal affirmation for me that everything truly is written in the stars, and destined to play out as it does. When I allow myself to appreciate the flow of life — the blueberry smoothie dripping from the ceiling — and not place expectation or emotion on the situation, I see so clearly how all of the pieces, people and places add up to complete a beautiful creation of adventure + new learning. How life is exciting and messy and there is always a new story waiting to unfold around the corner. How people and experiences come into our lives like new ingredients needed to make the recipe taste just right at the very last minute. I love telling stories to my nephew about all of the things that have already happened, but also telling stories of the adventures and creation that has yet to play out. He’ll soon after reciprocate the gesture by “mimicking” back my original story with his own twists and turns and imaginary characters and it really just makes me wish adults communicated to one another in this manner.
