Hyles annei es otra de nuestras muchas especies favoritas ¡así que es un privilegio poder verla todo el año! Le dicen polilla colibrí, y al verla volar es fácil entender por qué. Cuando liba se queda suspendida en el aire, estática, tal como lo hacen los picaflores y las libélulas. Se trata de una capacidad extraordinaria, que logran con la ayuda de sus alas alargadas y cuerpo más aerodinámico que el resto de las lepitopteras. Una gracia que hacen todas las mariposas de la familia de los esfíngidos. Vive desde Arica hasta Rancagua, y aparece en las zonas del desierto florido cuando ocurre este fenómeno. Las orugas comen vides y alfalfa, y tienen una estructura naranja en forma de cuerno en el extremo posterior del cuerpo. No pincha ni tiene veneno, es sólo para disuadir a sus depredadores. Scientists estimate there are 150,000 to more than 500,000 moth species. Their colors and patterns are either dazzling or so cryptic that they define camouflage. Most moths are nocturnal, and need to be sought at night to be seen – others fly like butterflies during the day. Finding moths can be as simple as leaving a porch light on and checking it after dark. Serious moth aficionados use special lights and baits to attract them. National Moth Week celebrates the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths. “Moth-ers” of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about and document moths in their backyards, parks, and neighborhoods. It’s still #NationalMothWeek so here’s a layout of just a few of my favourite sphinx moths we’ve encountered over the last year or so! 😍 Although silkmoths are pretty awesome, my favourite family of moths are sphinx moths (family Sphingidae). • There are just under 1500 different sphinx moth species in the world, but they are probably most iconic for mimicking hummingbird behaviour. Many sphinx moths will hover around flowers and nectar (feed) at them. 🌸 This means they are extremely agile flies, but are also very important #pollinators! • Just look at the diversity of sphinx moths that you can find right here in Ontario!
