EARLY WARNING With the world’s largest carrier fleet, the Japanese navy ruled the Pacific in the first half of 1942, as naval tactics were changing from ships pounding away with guns to aerial battles fought by carrier-based aircraft. At Midway, the opposing fleets never came within sight of each other. — Having been tipped off to Japanese plans by U.S. cryptographers, the Navy sent Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats from Midway to search hundreds of miles of ocean. It was a Catalina crew who spotted the Japanese fleet. On the morning of June 4, about 200 miles northwest of Midway, a PBY reported the first contact with the Japanese carrier force. - How do you prevent aircraft chicken pox?
Among the various aircraft types to fly from #aircraftcarriers, some were ill-suited to the task and should probably have been left to long runways ashore. The Supermarine Seafire was one such aircraft. A Navalized version of the legendary #Spitfire, it was thought that the #Seafire would see similar success in a carrier-based interceptor role. But despite the Spitfire’s success, the initial versions of the Seafire struggled to endure the extreme stresses placed upon it in during regular carrier operations and lacked power at low altitudes. Later versions received strengthened landing gear and engines that produced more power at sea level. To help shorten the takeoff runs, they were equipped with auxiliary rockets which could be fired to produce extra thrust, though they were rarely used due in part to pilots’ very legitimate fears of an asymmetric ignition. As power was added in the form of the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, pilots soon learned that the Seafire’s rudder and landing gear weren’t quite up to the task of handling the additional power, and a number of Seafires were written off in takeoff and landing accidents. After one tour of the far east, all but three of one squadron’s Seafires were declared unserviceable due to damage such as the rear fuselages wrinkling from the high stresses of carrier landings. Later versions gradually addressed the many shortcomings with ever-heavier modifications, which proved to be band-aids to an imperfect base design, and crashes continued. The crashes are that much more tragic when one considers the time and effort it took to build each Seafire; the beautiful elliptical wing, for example, introduced much greater complexity to the build process due to each wing rib being a unique size. The Seafire’s last combat role took place in the Korean War, which must have made it seem like a quaint yet beautiful anachronism next to the F-86 jets that were coming onto the scene. Today, fewer than ten of the original 2,646 Seafires remain, one of them exposed to the elements and baking in the sun at a museum in Myanmar. - @cessnateur on Instagram

Adhering to Grummans design philosophy to produce an aircraft in which a pilot could become proficient in a short period of time, and that was easy to operate from a carrier yet could outperform the enemy, the Hellcat was loved by its pilots. Hellcat pilots achieved an amazing 19:1 kill ratio, downing 5,156 enemy aircraft in just two years. The Hellcat ranked at the top in most categories, making it one of the best fighters in the war. THEY CALLED THEM LITTLE COBRAS When U.S. Marines stormed the shores of Guadalcanal in August 1942 in the first major U.S. Pacific offensive of the war, both Americans and Japanese threw whatever nearby air forces they could find into the mix. The result was an ad hoc unit called the Cactus Air Force, after the island’s code name. Its most lackluster member was the Bell P-39 Airacobra. ::: The P-39couldn’t attain the legendary status of those aircraft produced later in WW !!, but proved critical early in the war. ::: The airplanes were welcomed by the Soviet Union where the air war was fought mainly at low altitudes and short ranges, and when German aircraft flew low for close air support, the Little Cobras, as the Soviets called their P-39s, were there to strike. — This Friday, September 25, an aerial tribute commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II will take place over the National Mall and Potomac River. — To complement the aerial tribute, we’ve created a special webpage dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. On September 17, 1944, the Allies launched a bold and dangerous operation they hoped would catapult their armies across the Rhine, into the heart of Germany, and end the war before Christmas. Following the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, Allied progress was soon measured in yards as they had to crawl their way through the thick hedgerows of the bocage country. Each small field was a set-piece battle; the Germans would expertly defend one and then retreat to another. However, General Omar Bradley designed a plan to break out of the hedgerows and get into the open country of France. His “Operation Cobra” unleashed a massive bombing campaign of the German front line units. It was followed by an assault designed to pierce the German defenses and unleash the new Third Army under General Patton to drive the Germans out of the Brittany peninsula. Patton’s troops swept across Brittany and then joined the rest of the Allies as they raced to the Meuse River and eventually reached Paris by late August. 30 September 1940 Oberleutnant Karl Fischer’s Bf109E-1 (Wn.4851 9+) of 7./Jagdgeschwader 27, after a forced landing near Queen Anne’s Gate, Windsor Great Park, Berkshire. The plane is subject to eager attention from the RAF salvage gang. The mission was a bomber escort. When the formation was on its way to the objective it was attacked by fighters (possibly Hurricanes from 303 Squadron), this aircraft getting into a dog fight. The combat was broken off and the pilot thought that he had not been hit. However an R/T message from his wingman told the pilot that he had a white petrol plume streaming behind and looking at his petrol gauge he noticed that the tanks were almost empty, so he made a forced landing. There were a number of bullet strikes from astern. (The pilot was captured and survived unhurt) Markings: 9 painted on yellow engine cowling. Spinner white, with black circle on tip. Photographed here at Flying Legends in 2019, sad to report that a month ago this beautiful aircraft had to make a forced landing on a routine flight from Duxford Aerodrome, crashing into a field and then hitting trees at some speed after suspected engine failure. Mercifully neither the pilot nor his passenger were badly injured, but the aircraft sustained considerable damage, the fuselage breaking in two just forward of the pilot’s seat. Whether she will ever fly again and live up to her ‘Invincible’ nickname is open to question – it’s always so tragic when these precious aircraft are lost. Let’s hope she can be restored and rebuilt.
