60 years ago today, Ted Williams stood at-bat for the last time in his 21-year career. Ending his career on a home run only added to his universal reverence as perhaps the best hitter in the history of baseball. #MassMoments #humanities #science #education #literature #philosophy #socialsciences #research #travel #books #history #liberalarts #psychology #school #sociology #highereducation #documentary #sociologie #imagination - @masshumanities on Instagram

Light Hearted episode 81 - Rob Benchley, Sankaty Head Lighthouse⠀ 🎧http://bit.ly/uslhspodcast⠀⠀ ...⠀⠀ From the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s, In the late 1840s, a bluff at Sankaty Head in the village of Sconset on the islands southeast coast was chosen as a lighthouse site, and a 53-foot brick lighthouse was built. The tower was moved away from the eroding bluff in the fall of 2007. The ’Sconset Trust is now responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the lighthouse and its grounds.⠀ ...⠀ Rob Benchley is the modern-day keeper of Sankaty Head Lighthouse. Rob is an accomplished photojournalist who has been the staff photographer for three island newspapers, and he is the author of several books. Rob and his wife, Carol, a retired Nantucket schoolteacher, live in a house they built together in ‘Sconset with a view of Sankaty Head Lighthouse.⠀ ...⠀ #uslhs #lighthouse #lighthousepassport #lighthouse_lovers #lighthouse_world #lighthouses #lighthousecaptures #lighthouselovers #lighthouses_around_the_world #lighthousesofinstagram #lighthouses_windmills_gs #nonprofit #podcast - @uslhs on Instagram

Did you know that saltcod was the nation’s fourth leading export after the American Revolution? And that the waters between Penobscot Bay and today’s Canadian border were among richest fishing grounds during the Civil War era? Join us on September 25th, 2020 at 4 PM for Maine Sea Grant’s next Coastal Conversation radio program on Community Radio WERU 89.9 FM, as we celebrate Maine’s bicentennial with Karen Alexander and Bill Leavenworth, historical marine ecologists who have pieced together Maines 19th century fishery. The photo, an old 1907 postcard from the private collections of Bill Leavenworth, is representative of how many coves and inlets on the coast of Maine likely looked in the 1800’s, when inshore fisheries, farming and woods work drove the economy. - @maineseagrant on Instagram

Happy #NationalLobsterDay! 🦞Prior to 1840, the lobster fishery had but a minor role in the American fishing industry. The market was limited by the difficulties of transporting live lobsters over long distances. As transportation improved, the market broadened and demand increased, leading to more fishing and reduction of lobsters, both in size and in numbers. When lobsters were once so large and plentiful, Native Americans reportedly used them for fertilizer and bait in addition to wrapping them in seaweed and baking them over hot rocks. For the colonists who found that lobster washed up on Massachusetts shores in two foot-high piles, they considered lobster only fit for the poor and served it to prisoners and servants. Read 100 fun facts about lobsters at https://www.woodmans.com/100-lobster-facts/. _______________________ (1) Aino Clarke (1914-1995), “Lobsters I,” undated. Ink on cotton.
