A picture with one of the top fighters of World War II, Grummans F6F Hellcat. Adhering to Grummans design philosophy to produce an aircraft in which a pilot could become proficient in a short period of time, and that was easy to operate from a carrier yet could outperform the enemy, the Hellcat was loved by its pilots. Hellcat pilots achieved an amazing 19:1 kill ratio, downing 5,156 enemy aircraft in just two years. The Hellcat ranked at the top in most categories, making it one of the best fighters in the war. It was at hooks airport for custom painting and restoration. The Battle of Gettysburg to many ended on July 3, after the devastating results of Pickett’s Charge. However, the battle for some soldiers did not end. The United States Sharpshooters were called upon again to remove enemy skirmishers from the field. In the early morning hours of July 4, four companies of the 2nd United States Sharpshooter (D, H, F, and B) were sent to the Peach Orchard to remove Confederate sharpshooters. Private Wyman White described the brief action; “We advanced at a double quick to a post and board fence some forty or fifty rods beyond the pike. On the opposite side of the fence was a corn field, the corn was up some three or four feet high and quite thick.” White mentions the enemy sharpshooters retreated, but they were not allowed to pursue. If they were to move, they would lose their high ground position and take significant casualties. They “had to lay low for if a man exposed himself, he was sure to be hit by a rebel’s bullet.” This brief engagement in the Peach Orchard on July 4 is not commonly talked about. The four companies had 3 men killed and several wounded by noon to drive the enemy from the field. They were relieved by the rest of the 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters and did not engage with Confederates the rest of the day. William C. Beard of Company F, 1st Sergeant Josiah Gray of Company D, and James S. Kent of Company G were those killed on July 4. Waiting for Her Man 30x40 A new piece headed for the C.M. Russell Museum Art in Action event. This one is a little different for me. Delivering a painting last year to a collector near Jackson Hole I happened across this sight. Immediately I pulled over the truck jumped out with the camera and commenced shooting. The clouds where putting on a display of hide and seek light requiring lots of shots. Looking out across the sage flats I was overcome with the vision of a native encampment and someone waiting. Charles Russell often worked that way and one never knows when the inspiration kicks in. Thats all it took and I had to paint it. Gertie is a very early car, and together they have had great success, including a podium in the 1980 Willhire 24 Hour Race.
