In August 2011 Washington D.C. Was hit with a 5.8 magnitude earthquake caused cracks and falling debris on the monument. After 33 months the monument was restored to its original state. Over 150 cracks were filled in the monument and all rainwater leaks have been sealed. The elevator inside the monument is back in working order. The entire restoration of the monument cost $15 million dollars. It’s Pride Festival time, so a happy Pride to all our LGBTQ+ followers. I’m going to take a look a couple of prominent LGBTQ+ Hungarians from history this week, starting with the fascinating life of Count László Almásy – better known as the English Patient (yes, the one from the film). Unfortunately, the film took an inordinate amount of liberties with Almásy’s life. He did not fall in love with his nurse, but instead the Hungarian pilot was exclusively gay, sharing beds with German military officers and even a few Egyptian princes (quite the résumé). Almásy fought in both World Wars, was a noted desert explorer (discovering the prehistoric art-filled Cave of Swimmers in the Sahara Desert) and an inveterate firebrand who attracted trouble like nobody’s business. He even drove Karl (grand-nephew of Emperor Franz Josef) into Budapest in the 1921 in doomed attempt to restore the monarchy (it’s thought that this is how Almásy became a count – the title was certainly not hereditary). The real story of Almásy is more interesting than I could ever include here, and far more riveting than that rather dull film. Read one of the many books about his life – you won’t regret it. This photo isn’t mine because I couldn’t make it down to the Hungarian Geographical Museum in Érd. It’s from Wikimedia Commons (Áron Léphaft). Have you noticed that the Lion Bridge restoration has begun in the park? Heres some background on the project. The Lion Bridge, built very early in the park’s history (circa 1890) as a carriage and pedestrian entrance to the park over a bubbling stream, is in urgent need of repair. The North wall of the bridge leans precariously to one side, and risks falling over and suffering irreparable damage. The lion head features of the bridge need to be recast and replaced. The stone work needs to be taken down, the failing foundation replaced, and the stones returned to their original stable positions. Erosion control is required around the site to prevent destabilization in the future. In addition to this restoration project, the bridge now sits tucked away without a stream or pathway. We will reconnect the bridge to the park’s pathways via a nearby sideway, as well as install brick pavers between the walls of the bridge to create a small, welcoming patio within the bridge walls and under the lovely trees in this area of the park. We will also grade the area for erosion control and install a small rain garden on the North side of the bridge to control rainwater runoff and further protect the bridge. Unexpected archaeology is the best archaeology. Went to try to see the the piece of Servian wall from Rome in Lincoln’s tomb, but it wasn’t open to visitors. Found this amazing tomb of John Riley Tanner, governer of Illinois who died in 1901. The next Society meeting will be on Wednesday 11th March at 7.15pm in the front lounge at St Marys Church Eastwood. This month we shall need to use the front entrance of the church and not the entrance at the back as our usual room is being used by another group. Our speaker this month will be Hilary Hillier and her talk will be on Lawrences use of dialect: a few readings and reflections. I am sure that many of you will have heard Hilary before; she does not claim to be a Lawrence specialist but descibes herself as a sociolinguist, interested in the different ways language is used by various people in various circumstances. Hilary goes on to say: My main area of research interest became the social implications of non-standard dialects (both accent and grammar) and, since I was born and grew up in Eastwood, with a miner father and a school teacher mother, I felt the Erewash dialect was the obvious place to start. Naturally-occurring dialect speech was all around, just waiting to be heard, identified and described. I was allowed to record great data in talks with children at the local primary school (formerly my own school) and collected lots of ‘field notes’ while out and about (buses could be a very fruitful source). The next logical step was, of course, to turn to Lawrence and his locally-based works, and they do provide a treasure-trove of complementary written-down data. (Lawrence really did know the local speech!) His various fictional situations give us a wide range of characters – both standard and non-standard speakers – and, crucially, interactions between the same characters in differing contexts. Talking Lawrence, 2008, emerged from all of this, as did a range of other published and unpublished material – see Note 6 in D H Lawrence Review, 2013, for details. After succumbing to a fever of some sort in 1705, Irish woman Margorie McCall was hastily buried to prevent the spread of whatever had done her in. Margorie was buried with a valuable ring, which her husband had been unable to remove due to swelling. This made her an even better target for body snatchers, who could cash in on both the corpse and the ring. The evening after Margorie was buried, before the soil had even settled, the grave-robbers showed up and started digging. Unable to pry the ring off the finger, they decided to cut the finger off. As soon as blood was drawn, Margorie awoke from her coma, sat straight up and screamed. The fate of the grave-robbers remains unknown. One story says the men dropped dead on the spot, while another claims they fled and never returned to their chosen profession. Margorie climbed out of the hole and made her way back to her home. Her husband John, a doctor, was at home with the children when he heard a knock at the door. He told the children, “If your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.” When he opened the door to find his wife standing there, dressed in her burial clothes, blood dripping from her finger but very much alive, he dropped dead to the floor. He was buried in the plot Margorie had vacated. Margorie went on to re-marry and have several children. When she did finally die, she was returned to Shankill Cemetery in Lurgan, Ireland, where her gravestone still stands. End of an era. Opened in 1965 built on the site of a bomb damaged estate (The Elephant was the centre of the target zone for the German air raids on London on 10 May 1941). It blazed a trail as the first covered shopping mall in Europe. In recent years it’s been home to a host of Latin American businesses (and the best place to get my fave treat - Dulce de Leche). Das Thema diesmal: Die Nachkriegszeit - als Stuttgart in Trümmern lag Kurz nach Kriegsende 1945 hungern viele Menschen, während die Besatzer versuchen, Nazi-Einflüsse auszumerzen. Ein wichtiges Instrument für sie: eine freie Presse. An Hitlers 56. Geburtstag ist der „NS-Kurier“ in Stuttgart zum letzten Mal erschienen. „Trotz alledem“, hieß es in der braunen Postille, „auf den Trümmern unserer schönen Stadt hat zu stehen ein standhaft Herz.“ Unmittelbar danach demonstrierten die führenden Nazis der Stadt, was sie unter einem standhaften Herzen verstanden: Sie machten sich davon. His most famous work is the tale „Der Verräter“, which describes the revolutionary upheaval of 1831. Hein tried to show the political and social processes illustrated by one person living in a small village. In 1947 the story was awarded the Luxembourgish Prix de littérature. In 1989, for the 150th anniversary of the Independence of Luxembourg, it was turned into a film entitled „De falschen Hond“ by Marc Olinger. In his poems Nikolaus Hein showed the idyllic Moselle region as well as his respect for nature. Due to his close relationship with the Moselle he also had a keen interest for the professions of the winemaker and the fisher. Het #rijksmonument aan de Molenlaan 10 in #Pijnacker is aan de binnen- en buitenkant opgeknapt en voldoet weer aan de eisen van deze #tijd. Hoogheemraad Manita Koop: “We willen niet zomaar afscheid nemen van ons cultureel erfgoed. Deze oude onverwoestbare gietijzeren #pomp met V-snaar aandrijving is afkomstig uit de fabriek van de gebroeders Stork. Travel Tuesday – Miller’s Park Sculptures, Lucas, Kansas Roy and Clara Miller created their park as a rest stop and recreation area along Kansas Highway 18, both for the citizens of Lucas and the public. They welcomed travelers, offered fresh water, eventually built cabins, and added playground equipment and picnic tables. Most importantly, they shared their small sculpture-filled park with visitors. They built miniature buildings for a tiny town and fashioned a rock garden of rocks and shells they gathered on their travels. During the 1920s, it was a Lucas gathering spot. Time passed, and the property was eventually sold in 1969 to settle the estate. The sculptures were moved to Hays, Kansas and became a tourist site known as Frontier Village. Initially a popular attraction, the effort faded and the sculptures were left to languish, but through the generosity and vision of Henry Schwaller IV, Miller’s Park returned to Lucas, Kansas. In 2012 and 2013, Kohler Foundation took on the preservation of Miller’s Park. The foundation was joined by a team of enthusiastic local volunteers, art conservators from Houston and Los Angeles, and preservation technicians to preserve the remaining forty-five sculptures. Miller’s Park now has a permanent location adjacent to the Garden of Eden in Lucas at 317 E. 2nd Street and is open daily.
