Early SoHo was an industrial zone, full of cast-iron warehouses and cobblestone streets. Large upscale companies used the warehouses to store their extra merchandise and made use of the ornate window fronts to display some of their finest wares. In the 1960s, however, artists began moving into the neighborhood, taking advantage of the large buildings with low rents, perfect for a starving artist who needed lots of room to practice his/her profession. #RunnersRepost @trackclubbabe ・・・ IT’S ALL THE SAME❤️ . Gosh- yesterday was a CRAZY day. Just so much excitement & craziness with the trials. Seeing @tunderface having a great start to the race & then a tougher day and feeling helpless was hard.😢 . And then after the last lap when I saw him- seeing on the tracker that the race was getting tougher for him, and then seeing him grab at his hamstring - like it was acting up- made me just pray super hard for him to be able to tough it out. I went to find him at the finish line where the friends & family get to see their athletes. While there, I basically saw EVERYONE I look up to in the sport. It was a tough day for SO many people after there & you got to see the rawness of emotion right after crossing the finish line - tears, not quite knowing how to process what just happened, it was all a lot to take in. . It made me realize- it’s all the same. Being a pro & insanely talented & at the top of your profession doesn’t make you immune from extreme disappointment & heartbreak that running can bring. You will never have 100% perfect days in running. AND THAT’S OK! And that doesn’t mean we aren’t talented. And that doesn’t mean that we aren’t worthy. And that doesn’t mean that the next time we step up to the plate we won’t get that home run. So that’s why we keep getting back up. Cause you can’t hit that home run if you go home. . I wish I had realized when I was newer to running that everyone experiences the disappointments- at EVERY level of the sport. And to handle them with a more level head than I did, realizing that the BEST of the best ALSO have tough days! . . I’m so happy that @tunderface took yesterday’s race so well. Like I told him yesterday, how crazy that a tough day is you GETTING to run at the Olympic Trials & that it’s ONLY GOING UP FROM HERE!!!! Good, good things are ahead for all of us. . Whatever it is, I want to do something because I love it, and I love where I am, and I love the people Im with.” ••• These last few months have been quite the adventure. I realize I haven’t posted as much on social media - between getting into the groove with my work schedule, adjusting to running in the summer heat, planning a move to the UWS later this month, I am maybe the busiest that I’ve ever been... and I love it. Thank you @by_expressen for having us for three weeks, learning Copenhagen’s roads on very loaded cargo bikes. ❤️ We were originally there for a one week holiday semi-unrelated to bikes, but when shift plans align and @allanshawphoto asks if you can jump in and help out... 😊 . We love looking at the CN tower colours each night. 📸 @nwain_lowe As of late last month, the tower has been doing nightly light shows. According to the tower Instagram page, the shows take place “at the top and bottom of each hour”. Capable of creating over 16.7 million colour combinations, the tower is viewable for hundreds of thousands of people across the region and has literally been shining light for us during isolation. Along with a light schedule on the CN Tower website, you can also request to shine your own colour on the tower! If the colours on the tower aren’t being lit for a special occasion (sports victories, national holidays, awareness days, etc) then you can submit a request to light it for your own occasion! Under the water, there is the unknown, secrets, fascinating things, beautiful places and – let’s be honest – some huge dark fucking scary shit! Looking at the surface, you can see right through it, and it doesn’t look like much. Sometimes it’s crystal clear and gorgeous. And at times, you can’t see what’s going on underneath. Sometimes you get stuck in these dark places underwater, you get lost, you cannot even see the surface anymore; the exit to all of this nightmare feels unattainable. And when you finally reach the surface, and look again, you’re back to seeing right through it, and it doesn’t seem that deep and scary. But each time that you dive in, you know a bit more about the ocean than last time. And each time that you allow yourself to explore your feelings, you know a bit more about yourself than last time. 🛢 HOW TO BUILD A DA VINCI ARCH ON A CLIMATE CRIME SCENE 🛢 As 2 weeks of nationally-coordinated rebellion drew to a close last Thursday, we blockaded the London offices of Schlumberger, the self-described worlds leading oilfield services provider. Schlumberger does not own any oil or gas fields, instead using its 36,000 patented technologies to help all of the major international oil companies to drain every last drop from theirs, and then search across the globe for more. With revenues in the billions, it can be found in more than 120 countries – with examples like Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Myanmar and Libya indicating that its claim of conducting business in a manner that preserves and respects human dignity is at best a very creative interpretation of the facts. It also doesnt shy away from the industrys most harmful and controversial technologies, including deep-sea drilling, arctic exploration, tar sands, fracking and re-fracking. It might come as a surprise that a massive, planet-killing company like this is largely unheard of. However, Schlumbergers business practices – such as its tangled international web of subsidiaries, incorporation in the offshore tax haven Curaçao, and (in contrast to its competitors) shunning of political donations and lobbying – suggest that this may not be an accident. Despite its low profile, Schlumberger is infamous to us. This year, we have blockaded the Schlumberger Gould Research Centre 3 times – resulting in 9 arrests – to draw attention not only to Schlumbergers role in environmental destruction, but also to its close links to the University of Cambridge. These include: the Schlumberger Professorship of Complex Physical Systems, the Schlumberger Cambridge International Scholarship, and the fact that the research centre in question is located in the “high quality, well connected research environment” of the University’s own West Cambridge Site. In February, our ongoing, youth-led #RebelForJustice campaign, which includes a demand that the University must cut ties with the fossil fuel industry, put Schlumbergers name in the international press during our high-profile week of citywide protests. - @xryouthcambridge on Instagram
