Heres a Feel Good Friday for you from Crane Trust Bison Coordinator Jacob Salter: Every once in awhile we come across an unexpected calf on the Crane Trust property. By that, I mean a calf born outside of the usual months that our calves are born (March through June). This year we have one of these unexpected calves who was born on August 31st. There are a number of different circumstances that can lead to a calf being born in the fall or winter. It might be that the mother is a young heifer that wasn’t quite mature during the normal rut, she may have been a fall calf herself, or maybe she was ill during the rut that caused a delay. Whatever the reason may be, the result seems to remain the same - a healthy baby! The fall is actually a good time for calves to be born. The weather begins to cool down, the flies start to disappear, and the rut is winding down. This calf will have a great opportunity to grow big and strong and find its place in the herd with the other calves. This year an unexpected calf is a welcome sight. It’s the first day of fall - which means fall trout stocking is right around the corner! Starting October 6, two-year old trout averaging about 14 - 18 in length, along with some three-year old broodstock will be stocked in several rivers, ponds, streams and lakes throughout New Jersey. During the 2020 fall trout stocking season, the Division of Fish and Wildlife will put approximately 27,000 trout in the states major trout waters – 6,000 more fish than previous years! The fish are stocked from the Pequest Trout Hatchery starting October 6 and stocking concludes October 14. All fall-stocked waters may be fished as soon as they are stocked. Waterbodies stocked will be posted in our Stories after stocking is completed each day. Franklin County is in western Maine. Over the past four years, one family has started a new adventure in it which makes the region feel even more western. Michael & Nichole Weaver are the proud owners of Bigelow Fields Ranch. I had the privilege to visit & see the place with my own eyes. It was both breathtaking & surreal. There in one of the most gorgeous parts of Maine — with brilliant fall foliage & beautiful mountains in the backdrop — are creatures I didn’t ever anticipate seeing here in Maine: BISON. The herd started with one bull & six cows; it currently totals 45 of these rugged animals. For full disclosure, let me insert here that there are a couple of mammals for which I have what I’ll call a “robust respect” (others might peg it as borderline fear). Bison & moose. So here I went into moose country to eyeball some bison. I emerged unscathed. I’m not sure we’ll become BFFs, but I was impressed by this wild encounter. Bison are well-suited for Maine. They like to be outdoors & thrive in cold & snowy conditions. Consider them hard-core, winter-loving Mainers. Ranchers Michael & Nichole, like every other Maine family I’ve met in these travels, are dedicated & hard-working. For sure, the scene on their land feels like something straight off a movie set. But there’s no glossing over the fact that a bison ranch demands not only HEART, to make the dream a reality, but BODIES willing to sacrifice & sweat. The investment is already showing great signs of success. The 126 acres is former pastureland. It is undergoing a transformation process that will soon resemble those days gone by — only with Plains bison rather than sheep or cows. As if this endeavor wasn’t enough, Nichole is an avid baker. On Saturday mornings, their porch is transformed into a hutch overflowing with freshly made breads & other goodies. The ranch is on a dirt road in a rural area, but folks line the drive to purchase items before the supply run out. Whether you’re coming for sourdough or a glimpse of bison, it is worth the trip. Well folks, we’re back at it. After a few months delay due to the pandemic, the university finally approved our request to continue fieldwork in the Upper Snake River watershed. This year we’ll be taking a broader look at cutthroat in the region, with the primary question being what is the role of different streams and rivers to fish production in the upper Snake River? We’ll be sampling fish throughout the region to map the “genetic fingerprint” of individual streams. From there, we can capture adults in larger rivers and determine the stream they were born in. Each stream is different may provide unique benefits to fish. Pictured is the upper mainstem of Spread Creek, which was full of age-0 cutthroat but mysteriously devoid of older fish. After 3 nights camping over 10,000, waking up early, glassing and hiking all day the right opportunity finally presented itself. I watched this buck bed down in a patch of trees this morning on the other side of the basin and decided to put a stalk on him, with everything in my favor I was able to sneak 30 yards from him in his bed, after waiting for was seemed like forever he finally stood up and offered me a shot. Grand Teton National Park experienced higher numbers of visitors this summer. Hiking trails saw increased daily traffic and campgrounds were filling up earlier in the day than previous years. But @tennesseejane brings us the story of one park visitor who still managed to find a secluded spot away from the crowds. Its the end of August, and Ive joined a handful of biologists for an expedition in Grand Teton National Park in northwestern Wyoming. The journey starts with a paddle across the north end of Jackson Lake to the mouth of a drainage. We ditch the canoe, pull on our neoprene socks, extend our trekking poles and start wading up a creek bed — ankle-deep in the cool water — in search of the elusive Harlequin duck. Retired Wyoming Game and Fish Biologist Susan Patla tells me to keep my eye on the rock bars that jut out into the creek. Its a tough species. One of the toughest, Patla tells me in a hushed voice in an effort to sneak up on the ducks. For close to 20 years, she monitored Wyomings Harlequin population and worked to protect their summer breeding grounds in the Tetons. Finally got to pack some meat off the mountain! This is a very cool story that is way to long to write... but there will be a video version! Last year we passed this ram because he was 3/4 curl and 7 or 8 years old.. (room for error) ... so this year we were stoked to be able to turn him up again! This year he was 8 or 9! PART 4: My parents hadn’t heard from me, the elk was only 400-500 yards away from the truck, my dad was now at my truck and he couldn’t find me, he was honking his horn and flashing his lights from where my truck was parked and I wasn’t coming. After a couple hours, a parents’ worst fear starts to develop. A young woman alone in the woods during hunting season.... did she walk back to her truck to get abducted? Did she accidentally slit her wrist while she was butchering the elk? Was there a predator? I knew these thoughts would be going through my parents head and I was determined to keep walking until I found my truck and could charge my phone and call my dad. Problem was, I was so turned around that I ended up hiking miles and miles away from where I should have been. The next morning I watched the sun come up and was able to get my bearings. I started walking in the direction I thought I needed to go and finally saw red flashing lights on the top of a hillside. My parents had called search and rescue and called in a group of friends and family to come look for me bright and early that morning. None of them thought I had simply gotten turned around since I was so close to the truck... they were all thinking the worst had happened. I was the only one that knew I was okay. I started hiking as hard as I could toward the flashing lights.... I was probably 2-3 miles away. When I started getting closer, I started shouting as loud as I could “I’m here” and a few minutes later Clint, one of the Fish & Game guys found me, radioed in to my parents and everyone else that I was okay. He gave me a couple gatorades which were MUCH appreciated and we headed back to the crew and started cutting up and packing out the elk. I was really embarrassed but also really grateful for the concern and help from everyone who came to my rescue. A couple hunters from the area helped quarter the bull and a couple people and myself hauled the quarters up to the truck. Easiest pack out ever - so much help. Not the way I wanted things to go, but lots of valuable lessons learned: •Carry a backup battery powered GPS always. •Carry a charger for my phone. Cont. in comments - @marandaratcliff on Instagram

𝙋•𝙀•𝙍•𝙎•𝙄•𝙎•𝙏•𝙀•𝙉•𝘾•𝙀 • I really don’t know where to start but this is the culmination of 6 years worth of building points, countless hours scouting and a total of EIGHTEEN days solo in the backcountry. • Mentally, I was waning and ready to move to some new country after having been up and down these mountains for so many days and just as I started to make my way to spike camp a bugle went off after a silent morning. • Having an idea where the sound came from I glassed up to the ridge in my previous video and could see the herd heading into the basin I was in. From that point it was a full on hustle to the top to intercept and quickly found myself in the midst of a bugle frenzy of roughly 7-8 bulls and a pile of cows. • Patiently, I waited for the elk to file by and stopped the herd bull at 44 yards with a single cow mew and the arrow was on the way 🏹 and my tag was notched. I’ve been working remote for the past week, while having a seasonal employee tend the flowers. • Vacations are a bit tricky for me because I want to be working all of the time. A good problem to have when you do what you love. • But, this break has been a much needed one. We’ve road tripped in a van from Montana to Wyoming to Idaho. • We’ve seen nature like I haven’t ever before. We’ve seen rivers and lakes, buffalo and bears. Let me take you back to 2013 for just a minute. It was a warm afternoon in May when I got called in to talk to my boss. I worked for a small storm water management company and we frequently had one-on-one meetings with the boss, so his request didn’t send up any red flags. As I walked down the stairs to his office my mind was already on the next task- heading home to pack for my favorite trip of the year (helping out on the family ranch in Southern Utah). I casually sat down on one of the chairs in his office and waited for him to speak. We sat in silence for just a moment as I began to sense the gravity of what was coming. “Kaleb, I’ve got some bad news. Our salesman has been struggling to bring in enough business to keep this division going. Unless he can really turn things around in the next couple weeks we’re going to have to lay everyone off.” I tried to process the news. But this was a huge blow. I’d been hired right out of college and only a year later I was already making more than many in my field. The odds of finding a job that paid even close to as much as I’d been making were slim. I left for the weekend completely devastated. Soon after returning from a brief and stressful trip to the ranch (*pictured) I was officially laid off. I might not have believed it at the time, but this changed the trajectory of my entire life in a GOOD way! It gave me a blank slate and acted as a springboard into a new career. And I love my job now! It’s more fulfilling, enjoyable and lucrative than my old job. So to the MILLIONS of people that just lost their job, I’m rooting for you! I don’t know what your story will be, but I DO know that there are valuable opportunities and experiences ahead of you. What a week! Monday the farm lost power due to the high winds. Tuesday the wind still blowing and smoke from the huge fires to the southeast of us started coming over. Also a small fire started in the hills above the farm. Then that evening flames were visible and Norman’s house was in the danger zone. They evacuated and saw flames coming up the hill, thought the house was gone, not allowed back up there. Pins & needles & anxiety til finally on Friday they could go back, house miraculously untouched but surrounded by burned trees. Friday night family dinner at the farm, admiring a rose we are testing, giving thanks for the outcome. Yesterday was my last day in Montana til the summer season; it seems I’m just never quite ready to leave. Seasonal life has its challenges, but I’ve been realizing, that beyond the influence of lifestyle, I tend to operate from a place of lack rather than abundance; daydreaming about how things could be better rather than fully immersing myself in how amazing things already are. . I tend to be pretty good at stopping to enjoy simple pleasures in my day, but ironically that doesn’t mean that I am able to be fully present in my life as a whole. I keep coming back to this snapshot from New Year’s Day and realizing that it’s more than just the gorgeous sunrise I savored for those few moments, but in hindsight, a perfect visual reminder of this beautiful life that I get to balance between MT and CA. So today I shift my thoughts toward gratitude and contentment and settle in and enjoy my drive across these Western states.
