Just in time for World Gorilla Day, a Bwindi baby boom: Five mountain gorillas were recently born over the course of just a few weeks in Ugandas Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The births come as welcome news for a gorilla population stricken by troubles and tragedy in recent months. . As the COVID-19 pandemic caused ecotourism activities to be suspended earlier this year, rangers and other park staff were forced to cut back on their activities due to budgetary constraints. Then, in June, the park lost one of its best known residents, the silverback Rafiki, to poaching. But as @faunafloraint explains, the string of new births point to a brighter future for Bwindis mountain gorillas. . The Flemish government has allocated no less than 1,828,610 euros, in 2019 alone, to the KU Leuven to finance these experiments on monkeys. Over the next 4 years, no less than 12 rhesus monkeys will undergo major brain operations in which electrodes are implanted in their brains and are withheld water to force them to cooperate with the experimenters. Animal Rights demands the release of the monkeys locked up in animal testing laboratories of the KU Leuven. Currently, more than 40 monkeys are in the animal testing facility of the KU Leuven. The animals are (re)used for an average of 7 to 10 years and deserve a dignified pension in a specialised wildlife sanctuary. Animal Rights demands an end to government support for all monkey testing at the animal testing laboratory of the KU Leuven. For over 30 years now, our taxpayers money is being wasted on cruel animal experiments that the majority of the population wants to see banned. ⚠️Primates Are Not Pets ⚠️ “All animals should be treated with respect & there should be nothing in social media to encourage people to buy wild animals as pets or to think that animals used in entertainment are happy.” -Jane Goodall ⠀ Behind many “cute“ pictures of primates lie a deadly reality of poaching, illegal trade, cruelty and abuse. Only babies can be traded and tamed. Like humans - no mother chimp would abandon her child, so for every individual captured & sold, a whole family is often killed in the process. ⠀ Social media content and films that portray primates as pets or where they are humanised can enhance the demand for wild animals as pets. ⠀ Due to a lack of evidence & reporting and a poorly reported trade for medical research, numbers for primates in pet trade can only be estimated. CITES reported a global primate trade of 450,000 live individuals between 2005-2014. However, these figures are conservative, because CITES only reports statistics formally provided by countries, which present only a fraction of the true numbers. The last 15 years, there has been a constant increase in the export of live primates with 3500 more individuals exported each year. ⠀ Primates are our closest living relatives & offer unique insights into human evolution, biology, behavior and diseases. They are essential to tropical biodiversity, forest regeneration & ecosystem health. Sadly ~60% of primate species are threatened with extinction and ~75% have declining populations. ⠀ They are not suitable as pets for a myriad of reasons such as transmitting zoonotic diseases, and aggression towards human. They suffer trauma & mental disorders from being held in isolation. Like humans, they have complex emotional & psychological needs, which can’t be fulfilled by humans. ⠀ You can help! Only share or like posts that show primates in the wild at an adequate distance to humans, or in the care of accredited facilities. Report harmful, unnatural content. Joining the ranks of many mammalian beings before me. If all goes as it should Riley and I are going to have a bebe in December. 🔮 I’ve been gestating since the first week of quarantine and we have temporarily relocated to smoky Santa Cruz to be with my family during this wild time. It truly feels like an insane time to invite someone into this world and the journey thus far has been very isolating for me even though my body is housing two people and I am as healthy as I can be. I am very lucky to be under such incredible care with access to affordable midwives. The more I learn about the process of giving birth (rather, giving LIFE) in this country, the more I realize how rare my experience is... Being pregnant in a culture where whole counties in CA are on fire because of a gender reveal toy or people congregate despite a global pandemic to eat cakes made out of diapers has led me to do a lot of scratching my noodle/gourd/dome. The perinatal disparities in the USA are some of the worst in the world. Black and indigenous birthing people are 4-5x more likely to die in childbirth than white women. Such statistics are just part of a long history of obstetric violence and racism targeting pregnant POC. If you dont know the history or present statistics, @everymomcounts is a great resource. If you can, I suggest donating to any of the following organizations: @sistamidwives @birthequality or go to @blackmamasmatter to check out their list of partners to find an organization in your area... Remember to send love to the people around you, even if they arent physically around you... you never know what someones going through. De aankopen gebeuren bij het grootste primatenonderzoekscentrum van Europa, het Biomedical Primate Research Center (BRPC) in Nederland. Yesterday was World Orangutan Day🦧But there may not be many years left to celebrate these amazing creatures if things continue down the same path. Palm oil is the leading cause of Orangutans being pushed near extinction due to their habitats being destroyed for plantations. This leads to Orangutans losing food sources, causing them to starve or go looking for food in the plantations and nearby villages, which leads to human conflict. If caught in a plantation, the mother is likely killed for being considered a pest in the home that was originally stolen from her. There have even been cases of female orangutans being used as sex slaves! I cannot comprehend the low level human you have to be to pay for sex with an orangutan🤬All of this leads to many orphaned babies, which, if they dont die first, are kept as a pet, where they suffer severe emotional & psychological trauma as well as malnutrition from being improperly fed. Orangutans stay with their mothers until ages 7-8. This is the longest dependency of any animal. They learn all the skills needed to survive in the wild. The lucky enough orphans are rehabilitated at a nearby jungle school program, where they learn the skills needed from pseudo human mothers. Female orangutans only give birth once every 8 years & around 5,000 are killed every year, so do the math. If a product is causing all this devastation to the planet & killing animals, then that product is not vegan. Palm oil is the furthest thing from cruelty free but there are many businesses that continue to falsely claim that items like oreos, nutter butter, etc which contain palm oil are vegan. They value monetary gain over not destroying the planet or not supporting extinction. Once they realize that no amount of money can buy a new planet, itll be much too late. Do not support companies whose products contain palm oil. The word sustainable is a lie because palm oil is a monoculture. Following up on the request from @vpollano to “post a photo of yourself traveling anywhere”—as I’ve been doing a lot of travel reminiscing lately, I thought I’d go way back into the archives. To spring 2009 and Indonesia, my first proper holiday escape after I moved to Dubai in June 2008. It was notable to me for a couple reasons: My first vacation that lasted longer than a week (I took 10 days because 2 weeks just seemed so decadent to me back then, coming from the American mindset of holidays being 7 days); and it was my first time in Asia, which has ever since remained one of my most enduring love affairs. This was in Bali’s Sacred Monkey Forest, in Ubud. I spent the brunt of the holiday traveling around Java, and was unsure about going to Bali as it seemed too touristic (and this was pre-“Eat, Pray, Love” movie madness). In the end I ended up spending the last few days in Bali—Lovina and Ubud—and am glad I did. Touristy? Sure. But also beautiful and cultural. Let’s face it, places become tourist hotspots for a reason and Bali is genuinely beguiling. I know it’s changed a lot in the past 11 years, and is somewhere I’m interested to revisit in the future. Where is a place you traveled to long ago that you’d like to revisit?
