The monarch butterflies have returned! They won’t stay long though; the female monarchs have laid their eggs on milkweed plants and the last hatch of caterpillars, for the season, is taking place. If you are lucky, you might be able to spot a chrysalis. In about 10 -14 days, the butterfly that is developing within, will emerge and start its long journey to the south to overwinter. This is the “super-generation” and will travel all the way to Mexico. That super generation can now be seen on milkweed plants in the garden at Canyon Rim Visitor Center. Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed plants, but the butterflies need pollen from other flowering plants to obtain enough energy to make their trip. Just a simple reminder to not cut your garden plants back until the first freeze. Something I spend a lot of my free time on is our butterfly garden. Last week we had over 100 monarch caterpillars, including a few new types that turn into this Queen Butterfly (pictured here)... the most I’ve ever seen so far. This week, all our milkweeds look like sticks, and our caterpillars struggle to find enough food. It reminds me of the importance of balance. When any type of abundance creates disharmony, life will always try to bring balance again, despite the discomforts it may bring. ✔ Please doubletab and tag a Friend below Stages of Life This Monarch caterpillar literally hatched right in front of me the other day, resulting in one cool & very lucky shot. The ensuing photo basically shows the entire life cycle of a Monarch butterfly (minus the egg). I planted swamp milkweed in our backyard when we moved in two years ago, which is the Monarchs host plant. I hoped the Monarchs would find it, maybe lay some eggs, and I could let the cycle-of-life play out naturally. Find it they did, but the caterpillars & especially chrysalises were meeting the fate of some unknown predator. I started bringing the large caterpillars into an enclosure I constructed to complete their metamorphosis out of harms way. So far, weve released 15 butterflies this year, and currently have 39 chrysalises hanging ready-to-hatch. These migratory butterflies will be begin their 2,500-mile journey to Mexico in a few weeks. Hanging loose with Monica the Monarch. 🐛🌻 Apparently I not only like rescuing animals but butterflies as well. This little one was caught in the surf of Lake Michigan at the Lions Den Gorge Nature Preserve in Wisconsin. 🦋 A newly emerged female monarch from her chrysalis. She needed some time to dry her wings and get them flight ready so I put her in my bathroom for about five hours before releasing her. Also found a hanging caterpillar outside my window that formed a chrysalis in about the same timeframe. This one is in a hazard zone... Right where my cat hangs out! Heres a look at everyone!! Craig is in the middle 😁 All 9 butterflies turned out healthy and were released during days with great weather! Out of 9, 7 were males and 2 were females (middle left and bottom left). Second picture is of Craigs release. I didnt get a chance to record it but I have this picture after placing him on a small tree 🌳 I have one more caterpillar who joined the gang a bit later, and theyve just turned into a chrysalis today! Stayed tuned for updates! Overall, this has been such a great journey and Im so happy that everyone followed along to enjoy the life cycle of Monarch butterflies.
